  1. Hi Miller, my problem with windows crashing appeared to be a faulty psu. Waiting on my dell da 2 now. Nonetheless thanks for the help! I will definitely try the bootup method you mentioned. Thanks!
  2. This works just fine @Vegarab. You don't require the second splitter because your gpu only has one 6pin.
  3. @enjoy the 8 pin PCIE female will not work with the DA2's male plug out of the box. The DA2's wiring is different from the 8 pin PCIE, so you'd have to do some soldering and cable cutting etc. Check the earlier pages of this thread, I saw some people answering this question if I'm not wrong. As for the barrel plug, I'm not sure how that guy got it to work, but the akitio takes a 2.5mm internal and 5.5mm external diameter barrel plug. No reason to buy a 2.1mm internal diameter variant because you risk damaging the akitio's plug. In fact somebody has asked this exact question earlier on in this thread, I swear- just swept through this thread today. What a coincidence.
  4. @enjoy your barrel plug should be 2.5mm and not 2.1mm.
  5. Hi all, about to purchase this Dell DA 2: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Genuine-Dell-220W-DA-2-AC-Power-Adapter-OptiPlex-USFF-SX280-GX620-N112H-/391640237708?hash=item5b2f93c68c:g:v8UAAOSwux5YPxqP Could someone help me double check this is the correct model? Have seen some people getting the wrong variant of the DA2 and I am unsure how to check as I cant find any model numbers mentioned in this thread. Thanks!
  6. new progress: i can get my external display to show for about 10-20 seconds after windows boots up (i.e.. login screen, desktop), then it hangs after that and becomes a white screen, and the system is unresponsive (caps lock light doesnt toggle). I can consistently get this result each boot. Since you suggested its a power problem, here are more details of my PSU: FSP 400W aurum Gold 80+ ATX 12V V2.3 & EPS 12V V2.92 4pin EPS cable modded with 2 yellow and 2 black cables into screw terminal barrel plug for akitio. 6pin for GTX1060 comes either directly from PSU, or via molex to 6pin, no difference at this point as load is low. I also tried using the akitio 60W power supply to test if it was the instability of my PSU, but the 60W one is worse and throws up a Code 43 every time. The 400W PSU is old, but it is a high quality PSU. My question is, the PSU can provide a stable voltage to keep the akitio and graphics card lit up consistently, so why cant it handle more than 20 seconds of just showing the external display? Also, I have used the mobile and desktop 372.70 drivers. Both give the same result. Any idea, @MVC?
  7. @Miller hey man, did you get it working? I have exactly the same setup as you, 2015 13" mbp and zotac 1060 6gb mini. I cant activate my egpu at all, even though windows shows its working properly in device manager. I cant even get my external display (which is connected to 1060) to show any display at all, and benchmark or games also fail (internal display too). Windows simply crashes or hangs everytime i do so. I have tried both desktop and notebook drivers version 372.70 for the 1060. Anyone has any idea?
  8. I use the switch on the psu. Paperclip trick done on the 20pin mobo cable. The akitio lights up and my 1060's fan spins fine though, even after windows crashes they continue to be lighted up/spinning. Does that mean anything?
  9. Hi all, I have the following setup: early 2015 rMBP 13" Win 8.1 on external SSD akitio thunder2 + gtx1060 6gb 400W gold PSU, with a 4pin EPS remade to barrel for the akitio, and a 6pin VGA into my GTX1060 external HDMI monitor connected to eGPU Beyond the usual booting trouble, everytime I go into Windows and want to utilise the eGPU, whether by just displaying my external monitor in control panel or running benchmark apps like unigine, a black screen occurs. Windows boots up with only my internal display showing, and control panel is able to reflect the name of my 2nd monitor properly. However if I ever try to switch to extend/duplicate/2nd screen only, Windows crashes. I know it has crashed because the light on the caps lock key wont toggle when I press it. The only thing I can do at this point is force shut down. In device manager, Windows shows my GTX 1060 just fine and even shows its status as "working properly". Yet, I cant utilise my eGPU. I have the v327.54 geforce drivers already installed. I also tried v327.70 to no avail. The only time anything ever appeared on my external display during this eGPU thing (like, ever) is a flash of a white screen on both internal and external displays, before the macbook/windows crashes. I have tried restarting countless times, either plugging thunderbolt cable in from cold boot or only when the windows insignia shows. I am clueless as to what's wrong. Does anyone have any idea? I will greatly appreciate it!!
  10. Btw, B&H's used akitio prices are as follows: Condition 10 goes at $159, Condition 9 goes at $149 (mine was a condition 9). For what I mean by condition 9 and 10 see here: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/find/UsedConditions.jsp If you get lucky and are able to catch when they have a used one in stock, it will likely follow the above prices, although I'm not sure when they will have stock. Not sure about other conditions as I havent seen them yet but you can roughly make an estimate. Hope this helps!
  11. Ah i see. Didnt notice the mbp model. If you ever change to a TB2 mac in the future, getting an akitio will be futureproof for that . The newest touch bar macbooks are TB3 though so thats another story. B&H occasionally has used Akitios, ive seen it 3 times (of which one of them i bought haha). The condition is excellent with almost no signs of use, i got mine for $149 excluding shipping. I saved up some money for the akitio especially given shipping it to my country is quite expensive. Even so, it was the most cost effective option for me after searching tons of reseller websites. I would also suggest aaving up that little bit more money, just for peace of mind. If you have spare time to tinker or have a really strict budget, you could probably still get the thundertek, just no promises on reliability or support. Im sure the community will gladly chip in though since it will be interesting if this proves a good cheap alternative.
  12. The thundertek only has a TB1 link, which is a bummer if you have a TB2 port in your mac. There wont be issues, just more bottlenecking which i would avoid, since egpus already have many factors causing bottlenecks. IMO its not worth it. I tried searching and couldnt find anyone who tried it. Youd be better off with an akitio so people can help you out along the way too. Of course, technically speaking it should work. If youre daring you could give it a spin and let us know- you could be the first! But if you would rather play it safe and have a more smooth sailing experience, get the akitio or something more tried and tested. I got a used akitio (TB2) off B&H for just 10 dollars more than the thundertek thing- just my two cents.
  13. 1. yes. the pixels in your extermal monitors will be pushed by the egpu instead of your mbp's gpu. However, the internal display is tricky to get running from your egpu especially since your new mbp has a dGPU included. Processing apps etc still run on the mbp's cpu, except for rendering scenes and videos etc, so thats that. 2. Workstation GPUs exist out there that focus less on gaming and more on professional setups. Using these as an egpu is less common and i dont know much so i will let someone else answer this. 3. If your egpu doesnt have sufficient ports, you could consider daisy chaining some monitors if they allow you to, eg the thunderbolt monitors. Its basically pluggin monitor A into the egpu, then plugging B into A,... It should work. Depends if your specific monitors allow that though. You may wanna consider looking for GPUs with more ports preferably since there are tons of brands out there anyways. My rather basic 1060mini already has 5 ports- 1 hdmi, 3 displayports and 1 dvi, and if you get something similar just hook up adaptors and run as many from the egpu 4. Some insight: gaming GPUs are powerful too and also can run many monitors with ease. I suggest looking up reviews of such setups and what gpus they use. Take note of the various resolutions too; five 4K monitors is very different from 5 1080p monitors. All the best!
  14. Could you give me some examples which types of games are more cpu dependent? Maybe open world games like gta?
  15. Its just an aesthetics thing, but I would really love to run my Akitio semi-closed; its just so much neater. Why semi-closed, you ask? I'm thinking of sliding it up to the point where the 6pin connector sits into my GTX1060 mini–which perfectly fits into the akitio box, except for the 6pin power cable. But of course theres the issue of hot temperatures. To those with experience with the akitio, do you think it is alright to leave my akitio closed with around 5cm(~2in) of open gap? picture attached to show you what i mean. Its much cleaner, isnt it? (pardon the small image, I'm limited as i just registered here) Did anyone run any temperature tests and care to share your insights? Thanks a bunch
  16. Hi all. I have a rMBP 13" 2015 (force touch model), with the following specs: CPU: 2.7GHz Dual Core i5-5257U (specs here: http://ark.intel.com/products/84985/Intel-Core-i5-5257U-Processor-3M-Cache-up-to-3_10-GHz) 8GB DDR3 RAM (on hindsight, should've upgraded to 16, but damn it soldered RAM, I'm stuck with this now. About to give it the eGPU treatment with a GTX1060 6GB (zotac mini, no OC) with the akitio. All components have already been bought, awaiting setup in my free time. I have seen people talking of CPU bottlenecks. My question is, to what extent will my MBP's CPU and RAM bottleneck my gameplay? And does this bottleneck restrict actual frame rates in games, or is it only prevalent in some other types of computing or rendering which is more CPU-dependent? Maybe only in terms of longer loading times–e.g. maps in CS:GO? (which I'm alright with anyways). Correct me if I'm wrong but I had the impression that games and graphics are little affected by the CPU. Thanks! Looking forward to any insights from the more experienced people in here
