  1. Hi MaIsNeR ! For your information, I did the upgrade, and I I proud to tell you it is 100% working ! I can now put the 920XM to 3,8GHz . Now I have to solve another big problem: HEAT ! This G73jh is HOT ! I am thinking about adding a third heatpipe/heatsink/fan block on the DVD caddy, plus another heatpipe from CPU to GPU. Problem is custom heatpipe are expensive... Also, I have a 6250 Intel Wifi chip If you do it you will not regret it !
  2. Hi MaIsNeR ! sorry for the delay :). I didnt fix it yet but now I know why it is not working ! It is because all G73jh motherboard are not exactly the same. Mine - and probably yours - was designed for the i5 configuration. So it do not have all the VRMS soldered ! Checkout your MB, around the cpu you should see some lacking component ( but footprint and trace are there). So only two solutions: - adding the lacking vrms, wich is not without risk because we dont know if there is others required part and/or software config. - buy another motherboard designed for i7 config... best choice IMHO ! I will go soon for the second solution as you can find cheap MB from china...
  3. Re-Hi jurom ! As I tell you in the other thread, my main problem now is the MB. Mine is too weak to power the 920XM at full speed. And you are right, I did the same mistake with the vbios... Now I have flashed the right vbios and it work great ! But at 850Mhz it is very close to the tdp limit... In some games its Ok, but in others I have to underclock (mainly in the last tomb raider). (Even with the undervolted vbios) I am thinking about adding a secondary heat-pipe/fan in the dvd trapdoor . Thank you anyway. Edit: with the vbios i use, I have not sound over HDMI and VGA isnt working too. Is it the same for you ? Edit: At stock clock (850/1200), undervolted vcore (0.975v), I get constant 92° in FurMark after 20 minutes.
  4. Hi jurom ! Thank you for the answer, I catch the issue ! As I was thinking, the i5 MB version is less power capable. If you look at the MB componant, it lack 5 VRMS around the CPU.... So I have to buy a i7 motherboard to clock the 920xm at 3,2Ghz ! Thank you anyway.
  5. Did you try with another PSU (AC adapter) ? Did you try to disable twin turbo mode ? Did you try MEMTest ? You can also try to repast/repad the whole computer (do not forget the chipset thermal pad under the keyboard).

Hi , I have two question for people who own (or owned) a G73jh with 920XM mod. - If you put the 920XM beyond the limits (Freq OR Wattage) do/did you get a BSOD or "instant motherboard shutdown" ? (I get instant shutdown if I exceed 65W, running P95) - Did someone tryed this mod from a i5-430m config and/or a brown motherboard ? Thanx !
  7. Update: I think HW64 is wrong, its not able to read the CPU multiplier in real time, against it compute a fake BCLK value... I think that because CPU-z's frequencies are all OK. So... My 920XM do not want to eat that much power ! Or maybe may MB do not want to feed it.. That would be strange since the 7970m work just fine. I am even able to overclock it (975/1400 from 850/1200, stable 1H FurMark (95° top temp)). I'll measure the Vcore to see if there is "glitch" or something like that.
  8. Some News ! I received the DELL 330W power adapter and I manage to "convert" it to G73jh jack. It work well but didnt solve anything... BUT ! I flash another vBIOS, a Clevo one (enduro disabled) and now the GPU run at max frequency ! So for the GPU part, its all working well.. Still have problem with CPU, my PC still instant shut down if I go after 70W tdp (while executing prime95) So I did a lot of test with ThrottleStop, HW64 and Prim95. What I see is that, when I raise TDP, CPU Frequency raise (wich is the desired behavior) BUT the BCLK become crazy and dont stay at 133MHZ ! It Jump to 150, even 170 wich mean my DDR3 SIMMs are way beyond the stock 666Mhz . I tryed to disable Turbo Boost in bios but by doing this I cant use throttlestop anymore :-/. I also tryed differents bios (211,213, modded 213 V5), nothing chage. If anyone have a G73jh with a 920XM/940XM can do the test... just run P95 and watch frequencies in HW64 and see if mem clock become crazy. In my setup the computer fail at 750Mhz (wich is high compared to stock 666...)

  10. If you only plug this card (without other), do the computer POST ? If so, you can try flashing it with DOS (aka blind flash). If not, you can try disabling the onboard EPROM by shorting it and the blind flash. Good luke ! EDIT: didnt see date...
  11. Hi, I am trying to do the "Ultimate" G73jh upgrade and I have power related issues. So I have the most "basic" G73jh, with i5-430m and 5870m. This version is the one with the brown MB, with only 2 memory slots. What I did: - Opening the whole laptop - Swapping 5970m to 7970m - Blind-Flashing 7970m vBios - It boot ! But GPU/RAM frequency stay at 450/300 maximum, because of my 120W PSU I think (throttle), So I ordered a 240W One - Swapping i5-430m to i7-920XM - It boot but I almost didnt use it because I was affraid of my weak PSU (dont want to burn it !) Then I received my new PSU, from ebay ( http://www.ebay.fr/itm/201638674476). And... Nothing change !! My 7970m is stil throttling. And I cant OC the 920XM, if I go over 70W TDP, the G73 instent shutdown :-/. I need your help to be sure Its a PSU related issue, and not something else, like my mobo etc. I dont want to buy a 100+€ PSU if this is not the problem. As my G73 is still out of his case, I manage to solder the PSU wire directly on the MB, and then I measured voltage during full load (prime95). IDLE 19,4-19,5V LOADED: 19,3-19,4V Not that bad ! I am very confused because the PSU seams to work. I have no oscilloscope to watch the signal in real-time... For sure it is not a real DELL but if voltage is not droping, whats wrong ? Its very frustrating to know that everything work but can't be "feeded" with Amps ! Any ideas ? EDIT: All temps are OK ! Furmark : 58° GPU... (because of the low Freq :-/ ) EDIT2: new info: I tried on battery, It is the same, is it a common behavioor ? (My battery is almost dead, only 30% capacity) EDIT3: Do you know if the "metalic" part of the case (under the keyboard) have somthing to do with the power delivery in the mobo ? EDIT4: I reassemble the laptop, so no, the metal plane have nothing to do with ground...
  12. Just for peoples who are still interested by this subject: I just did this upgrade ! (7970m). Its a bit tricky, what I did: For the Hardware part: - Buy a 7970m from ebay (around 300€). => Note: I buy a Clevo 1.2 one ! Peoples say it is the only one which is 100% working - Put your 4870 heatsink on it : - cut the non-GPU/non-Memory heatsink parts as the 7970m pcb differ from 5870 one - use the 5870m "X" at the card rear, you will have to carefully grow card holes with a cutter :-/ - Now you are done with GPU/MEM - Build a custom heatsink for VRMS/transistors/caps: - Google the card to find what components must be cooled - Find a large and flat heatsink (I use a chipset one from my old asus M2N4 SLI ) and cut it as a "L" to fit at the bottom of the main heatsink - Last problem: some components are not in contact with the heatsink ! - find a metal plane (copper or alluminium) of 2mm high - make a "sandwich" on top of transistors block (2x2): CARD / 1mm thermal pad / metal plane / thermal paste / HEATSINK. - you will just have a "problem" with one component wich is not exacty the same height, use only two layers of thermal pad and you are done ! (Note: I often add a bit of thermal paste on thermal pad to improve contact). Optional: You are done with the hardware part ! But you can also add a wire to disable the vbios in case of wrong flash ! It can be usefull in some case to allow the PC to POST even after wrong flash . Note: before wiring your switch, be sure it is "normally-open", I made this mistake and then my switch was always shorting the vbios... For the software part: Now your card is ready for flashing !! You can even try the card without... mine wad buy without vBios flashed so I had to. Note: for this step, your G73 must HDD-less or any other bootable support in order to be sure it will boot on an usb stick. To flash the card you will need another PC, some stuff and some softwares: - a usb key (better with an activity light on it !) - hp usb disk storage format tool - a win98 rescue boot image ( win98boot.zip) Note: I think any other dos image should work.. - atiflash - a working VBIOS => I use DELL VBIOS 015-017.XXXX EDIT: WITH ENDURO DISABLED !! Steps: 1/ Create your Bootable usb key with HP SW + win98boot 2/ Test it on another computer. Note: best choose a non-UEFI computer !! 3/ create an "autoexec.bat" file with only this line inside: "md BOOTOK" 4/ put the usb key on your G73jh,turn it on, wait for a couple of minute and put it back to the other computer 5/ check if "BOOTOK" directory was created => if not, you did something wrong :-/ try it again 6/ Put atiflash.exe and your vbios file renamed as "bios.rom" (DO NOT USE UPPERCASE !!) 7/ open your autoexec.bat and add those lines: atiflash.exe -ai > INFO.TXT atiflash.exe -p 0 -fs -fp -reboot bios.rom > FLASH.TXT 8/ GO ! Put the usb on the G73, turn it on ... and pray 9/ wait 2-3 minutes, remove the key and reboot, it should work ! 10/ If it is not working, check inside the key with another computer to see INFO.TXT and FLASH.TXT content If all the past steps work, you can plug your harddrives and install Drivers. I have it working in my G73 but performances are not really great (for a 7970m), I think it is because of my 120W Power adapter. I ordered a 240W Dell, I will tell you if it work ;-). Good luke !
