  1. Thanks Wei Lu for the numbers and svl7 for the new vbios. with the 1045/2250 settings, I get a graphics score of 8138 (physics 8800, combine 6355) and an overall score of 8000. awesome! going to the higher settings of 1088/2300 is not stable. 3D11 just stops running after a while. need to figure out how to raise the graphics score a bit. everyone is getting around 8400+ but happy for now.
  2. Did not manage to do any specific benchmarking, but I managed to run at 950/2250 (+100, +450) for about 6-7 hours with various games and no throttling according to MSI afterburner. The GPU and memory speed graphs are just nice and flat and at the values I expect to see (~980 MhZ for GPU and 2250 for the memory). The GPU utilisation was about 97% and the temp never exceeded 80C. next weekend, I'll try pushing it further. looks like the 850 non OV non OC version has lots of headroom.
  3. yes. with the heaven unigine benchmark. The OV 850 version throttles (according to MSI afterburner) but the non OV version is fine. Temps are ~70C. so not that high either. I've given up on 3DMark as it throttles no matter what I do (even with the base 819 non OV version). Using Heaven now as it seems to be more stable. I can post the graphs over the weekend if needed - - - Updated - - - I can get 900/2250 (+50, +450) with the 850 non-OV version. It does not throttle with the heaven demo. But I have not pushed it hard yet. That will happen this weekend. I'm also using a M4 with the 2G dell 680M. I have the 3D version though. I think that means that the card is connected differently internally (which results in the Intel GPU being completely disabled). not sure how that affects the throttling.
  4. ahh, so it is just for the integrated graphics!! Thanks!! can't ungrey it then as the integrated graphics are completely disabled on a 3D alienware laptop from what I understand. Will investigate more over the weekend in any case. Thanks! one mystery solved :-)
  5. Thanks for your settings. I'll look at this over the weekend when I have more time to do this. Right now, I'm happy with the settings as there is no throttling in the Heaven demo. I'm also using an unlocked A09 bios now fwiw. The GT overclocking options are still greyed out. Thanks! - - - Updated - - - for what it's worth, I have the same results. All the overvolted versions throttle with my Dell card. The best for me is the base 850 no overvolt version. And I can push it to these levels with no throttling when running the heaven demo with everything turned to the max (but no 3D) "So my final settings (for tonight) are the base 850 MHz vbios with standard voltage. OC to +50 MHz GPU Core and +450 MHz memory core. Gets good performance (36 FPS after scene 6 with every option set to max and 3D turned off) with no throttling shown in afterburner."
  6. okay. did more testing. using the Dell 680m - 850 base - 889 boost - OV.zip vbios. I've set the memory to 2250 MHz (+450 Mhz) and the GPU to 980 MHz (+130 MHz). This seems to be a sweet spot for the 4G card (reading the thread started by widezu). Figured the chip itself is similar on the 2G version. with MSI afterburner, I can see what is happening during a run of 3DMark 11 (Vantage has the same pattern as well) The GPU temp never goes past 80C, and the utilization is 97% or higher The Memory clock stays at 2250. However, the GPU clock keeps bouncing between 1019 (with the boost) and 255. even with a 100% utilization. so basically, the card is switching frequencies constantly from high to low. very nice saw tooth b.t.w. The relevant lines in the afterburner log are 02, 28-10-2012 17:49:22, GPU temperature ,GPU usage ,Core clock ,Memory clock ,Memory usage 80, 28-10-2012 17:51:27, 65.000 ,67.000 ,241.693 ,2249.990 ,311.391 80, 28-10-2012 17:51:28, 67.000 ,96.000 ,1019.032 ,2249.990 ,311.391 80, 28-10-2012 17:51:29, 68.000 ,97.000 ,254.758 ,2249.990 ,311.391 80, 28-10-2012 17:51:30, 68.000 ,97.000 ,1019.032 ,2249.990 ,311.391 80, 28-10-2012 17:51:31, 69.000 ,97.000 ,254.758 ,2249.990 ,311.391 80, 28-10-2012 17:51:32, 69.000 ,97.000 ,1019.032 ,2249.990 ,311.391 80, 28-10-2012 17:51:33, 69.000 ,96.000 ,254.758 ,2249.990 ,311.391 80, 28-10-2012 17:51:34, 70.000 ,95.000 ,1019.032 ,2249.990 ,311.391 80, 28-10-2012 17:51:35, 70.000 ,96.000 ,254.758 ,2249.990 ,311.391 80, 28-10-2012 17:51:36, 70.000 ,96.000 ,1019.032 ,2249.990 ,311.391 80, 28-10-2012 17:51:37, 70.000 ,96.000 ,254.758 ,2249.990 ,311.391 tried with the latest nvidia drivers (306.97 and 310 betas) and the modded DOX 306.02.2 drivers. same pattern. What can I do to fix this? Thanks. Update: -------- looks like the over-volted versions all throttle for me. The non overvolted 819 MHz version does not throttle when raised to 850 MHz. The 850 MHz over-volted version throttles immediately. Strangely, the overvolted version throttle less with the GPU set to +120 (even less than GPU set to +0). but it still throttles. could not find a sweet spot. now experimenting with the non-overvolted version Update 2: --------- looks like 3DMark 11 is causing the throttling. change to heaven unigine demo and that does not throttle immediately. However, even in this case, the over-volted vbios do not perform as well (throttles with heaven as well). So my final settings (for tonight) are the base 850 MHz vbios with standard voltage. OC to +50 MHz GPU Core and +450 MHz memory core. Gets good performance (36 FPS after scene 6 with every option set to max and 3D turned off) with no throttling shown in afterburner.
  7. I'm using a 2G Dell 680m as well. The problem is that nothing really seems to work. Will investigate more later. Maybe with the A05 bios. As mentioned previously, with the A08-dell-locked-version and A09-unlocked bios, the "GT Overclocking" options in the bios are all grayed out and non-selectable. Is that normal? Is it locked because I have the 3D version, so the card is internally connected differently?
  8. hmm. so test 1 makes the GPU throttle back for all subsequent tests? because I notice that the main differences are in test 2 and 3. when I compare the results breakdown between my rig and similar single card rigs. I get 30 something FPS for test 3 (the forest scene without tesselation). but the other rigs (that score 7000+) get 40 or 50+ FPS. similar difference for test 2. the difference for test 1 and 4 is just a few FPS. - - - Updated - - - yes. The physics score does not get weighted as much. how did you get so high for the GPU score? what GPU clock are you using? is that the 2GB Dell version of the 680M? also your physics score is insane! :-) The most I managed to overclock my 2840QM to is 47x multiplier on CPU 1, 41 on CPU 2, and 40x on 3 and 4. also tweaked the turbo times to let the CPU run fast longer. according to Intel's XTU, my max turbo boost speed is 4.747 GHz (up from 2.828 GHz). That is applying a 1 MhZ boost to the reference clock. The 2960XM is so much faster than the 2840QM it looks like.
  9. I don't understand. how would 3Dmark 11's first test be giving different values for the various vbioses? The problem is that relatively, the over-volted vbioses do not do as well as the base 0.912V vbios. still can't seem to get to a 7000+ score on 3dmark 11. I can get 9000 for the Physics score. so the CPU bit seems to be okay
  10. okay. I have a M17x R4 with the 2G 680M card. This laptop has a 3D display. I'm using the unlocked A09 bios. I've tried all four special vbios (the base 819 Mhz version and the 3 850 Mhz versions). The performance in 3DMark 11 is not great compared to the base vbios. I'm getting very inconsistent results. still investigating, but the base vbios with +75 for GPU core seems to do as well as all the special vbios. should I use the unlocked A05 bios instead? as mentioned in the bios thread, the bios options for "GT overclock" are all greyed out for me. even with the unlocked bios. Update ------- okay. so the non-voltage increased vbios give reasonable performance (~6500 scores with no modifications). The versions with voltage increase do not do so well (~5300 scores) went back to the original vbios (with a +75 GPU clock raise) (~6500 score) Any suggestions? Thanks!
  11. used the blind flash technique described here M17x R4 BRICKED BIOS RECOVERY (not vbios) to downgrade from A08 to A05. Then flashed A09 unlocked. I see the new advanced tab in the bios now. However, the GT overclocking options are still disabled -- both in the advanced tab overclocking menu and the main overclocking menu. what does that option do?
  12. for the M17x newcomers like myself, this post by The_MOO has most of what you need to know in one place How to overclock the M15x,M17x GPU and the M17x CPU You also want to read the vbios flashing guide by svl7 http://forum.techinferno.com/general-notebook-discussions/2166-%5Bguide%5D-nvidia-vbios-flashing.html and then go find the right vbios itself. again, thanks to svl7 http://forum.techinferno.com/general-notebook-discussions/1847-nvidia-kepler-vbios-mods-overclocking-editions-modified-clocks-voltage-tweaks.html
  13. not clear it was a $400 upgrade actually. The original spec (and pricing) was for the 580M which was the top of the line card at that point in time. It just got switched to the current top of the line card at the point of delivery. I'm not sure that the overall price has changed that much. But it is a much faster card. so overall, I'm not that displeased.
  14. just received my M4 last week. specs are 3820QM CPU, 16G, BluRay drive, 680M video card, 3D 1080p display it took about 6 months to get it. when I first placed the order (in Feb), it was for a M3 with a 580M card. That order got delayed and eventually cancelled as the 580M was discontinued. eventually I received a M4, for the same price, with a 680M. happy to get the 680M as it kicks ass. not sure that the Ivy bridge CPU is better than the Sandy bridge in the M3. now figuring out how to safely overclock the heck out of this beast :-)
  15. just received my M4 last week and it had the A08 bios as well. any news on what has changed? also, is there an unlocked version? I noticed that I could select the overclocking options but that all the GPU settings were not selectable. It was possible to tweak the CPU and memory settings but not the GPU settings. My laptop has a 680M b.t.w.
