  1. be careful with this vent lifters that may keep the dust out but they them selves are also a restriction either is fine. the idea behind it is that you don't smear it around on the surface creating pockets of air that become an issue with heat transfer efficiency. the pockets of air become super heated and hold that heat between the processor. the line or the pea is likely a similar amount just on an angle. also its not a case of more is better when your talking about thermal paste.
  2. Well apparently acording to notebookcheck Asus and RoG have released benchmarks for a laptop ththat out paced the titan. They didnt say it was a 1080m but they did say we can have an educated guess. They are set to announce the laptop at the 2016 computex event in 2 weeks. If they do announce the 1080m maybe nvidia is planing a release if not maybe itll push them to do so. Im holding out for an MSI titan with 1080m Sli. The MSI titan has desktop 980s in Sli i think. Have a look into it
  3. So i got my alienware fixed and its failed again. This time it sort of works it has vertical lines on the screen and cant boot into windows. So im gonna swap these cards out. I was thinging about swapping to another amd card. Do you think an AMD R9 M290X would be compatable? I know people are swapping to 980ms but ive heard they just dont work 100% and fail a lot. So what GPU do you think that can work other than 680m and 7970m
  4. i made a topic on fighting laptop heat but i wanted to know if there was another way i could do it on the ROG
  5. so how would i go about changing this?
  6. becareful with undervolting too, you can still damage. try MSI after burning and enable unofficial overclocking and see if you cant undervolt with that OR use nvidia tools http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_system_tools_6.06.html and you can undervolt in there. remember to take it easy and slowly k?
  7. easier airflow, at least it wasnt for nothing haha
  8. i do it every 6-8 months or so, but if you live in a dusty area you may need to do it more often. Just in case you didn't already know don't place your laptop on the bed or carpet as it not only clogs the vents but it sucks up dust.
  9. GREAT! I'm glad you found it useful
  10. Hello ive seen a few people asking about heat and i thought i would chime in and say a few ways to keep down the heat! there are a few ways you go about this with out opening the computer, for those who arent to sure about taking a screwdriver to their laptop it may help you. in saying that, if your fans are dirty then this will not help you at all. I TAKE NO RESPOSIBILITY TO ANY DAMAGE HARDWARE! ANY CHANGES YOU MAKE ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK! INCREASING THE FAN SPEED to control your fans use this http://www.hwinfo.com/download64.html this is a free program that alot of people use on various computers. it work on alienwares well but im yet to test ROG and MSI with it. its pretty simple to use install it and get to this page and click on the sensors button then on the next screen click the small fan icon at the bottom unless you want to manually adjust your fan between each time you play click customer auto and you can edit it from there UNDERCLOCKING download and install NV tools it can manage fan speeds too but its not always 100% in laptops http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia-system-tools-6.08-driver.html on the left hand side, under the performance tab, select device settings now just slide it back in small steps until you are comfortable with the temps. remember that if your computer blue screens it DOES NOT mean your computer has been damaged. it is simply a way for the computer to avoid damage. adjust the slider in intervals of about 15mhz to be safe and click apply each time. start on the core clock and finish on the memory. Every now and again it is good to check on your progress to see how far you need to go. (more on this later) MSI after burner is a good one too http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/msi-afterburner-beta-download.html again the fan control is a bit hit and miss with it but it can control your clock speed. ass per the program above keep going untill you hit a STABLE setting you want. TESTING here we will look at the new GPU temps after the tune. MSI Kombustor is a great way to test your heat. http://www.geeks3d.com/20150710/msi-kombustor-v3-5-2-64-bit-v2-6-0-32-bit-download-gpu-stress-test-benchmark/ click on stability and watch the temps. if you see any artefacts stop the test and increase the mhz by 15mhz each fur mark is the one that i use to test the heat of my alienware http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/ aim for about 70-75*C. hope this helps you a bit. PS avoid EVGA's tuning tool on alienware i have heard it can brick your LCD! CLEANING THE FANS Just for the sake of it ill give you a few tips on cleaning your laptops fans out. assuming you already know the basics of using a screwdriver to open a laptop ill cover a few things to help you. REMEMBER, IF YOU REMOVE THE HEATSINK YOU WILL NEED NEW THERMAL PASTE! compressed air is a great way to remove dust and id recommend having a can of it over a compressor. The reason being is that some compressors can fill with a bit of water and can spray it directly into the computer. you can spray the air into the vents and while it wont really "clean" it it may open enough room for air to pass out. i DO NOT recomend this however. after opening up the computer and removing the fan take a paint brush and clean the entire fan, get as much of the dust out as you physically can. you can use toothbrushes too if you dont have anything else. make sure you clean the grill behind the fan too as that is where the dust usually builds up. removing this dust and hair is the most important part of this clean up. now on to thermal paste. remove all the old thermal paste from the heat sink and the CPU with a dry cloth then, use isopropyl alcohol to clean the rest. some people seem to think that more is better but this is completely not true! if you put a large amount of thermal paste on the heatsink you will actuall have hotter temps. this is due to either: A ) the heatsink is not geting enough connectivity to the GPU as the layer of thermal paste is too thick B ) too much of it creates small pockets of air, these air pockets become super hot and that causes more heat on the GPU the correct amount is roughly the size of a pea even that is boarderline too much. Dont spread it around instead place your heat sink over it as even as possible and screw it down in a X pattern for an even spread. really hope this helps you and good luck!

  12. have you tried pulling it apart and putting it back together again? this seems to fix a fair amount off issues. you may need to send it away to be repaired by a pro if you are uncomfitable with the process. It wont be to expensive to have done either. im glad this hasnt happend to me ive tried switch GPU on the same model and lucky for me it did nothing.
  13. just a reflow for now, but its back to 100% and im loving it! very glad i forked out the money for the repair. very strange though. i had a look and there is NO tuning programs on there. he is to scared to change anything from fear of voiding warranty. it doesnt get overly loud either. My alienware for example completely drowns his out. i ran vally benchmark on it and its scored about where you'd expect but it sat at about 64-66*C the entire time. completely blew me away. ill catch up with him when i can and get a screen shot of it. ill also let you know what bios version he is running. im so glad i got my old one fixed sounds like the new ones are just full of issues. With quality testing about as good as phoenix games. Dell isnt the only one who tried the battery power usage trick. i have a friend with a MSI GT70 and the 880m. this causes the battery to drain when playing games on charge. it doesnt seem to be to much of an issue though as it lasts a good few hours before warning him about the battery. the BGA sucks! why did they do this? alienware was one of the few laptops that could be modded and upgraded and now the owners of the new ones are stuck!!
  14. Hello everyone, I'm working on tuning my ROG and I've hit the thermal limit that I'm comfy with( about 79*C). This is still higher than i like so i was wondering if someone out there knows how to tweak my fan to spin a little harder. it seems to be moving a small amount of air. I've removed all the dust and phyically the computer is in great shape so it must be a software / bios issue.
  15. I got word from the repair agents and they said it was a video card issue. They have fixed it and charged $220 but i hope they are right and its all sorted. i think i will keep the laptop. i am getting it back on monday so ill be able to see if its back too 100%. as said before the new ones dont seem to hold a candle to the old 18XR2. i also have an asus ROG G750 with a 780m and 24gb of ram ( typing this on it) and the build quality seems to be better than that of my friends 2014 AW17r2 and is actually faster. one thing i have to say though his runs insanely cold!! i have NEVER seen it get over 62'C (143.6*F) its the coldest running laptop ive ever seen! the only other advantage i can think of it that you can easily change thermal paste and clean it as it have 2 screws and you at the GPU and CPU. personally i LOVE the 18xR2's screen. its so clear and crisp. The one on my ROG is dull and shabby in comparison to it. speakers are also incredible compared to the new AW and the ROG G750
  16. just an update the laptop is being sent away today. should be back in 3 weeks. when it gets back ill look into upgrading ill also look into getting an i7 3920mx installed while i'm at it. off topic that do you guys think about the new alienware 17 R2s i like the way they look but i feel they arent built as well. anyone else feel this way?
  17. what did your alienware do? just no display or was it 8 beeps?
  18. i was banking on that to drive the 980ms down. ill have to see what the comparisons are. i have a feeling my cards will need a full reball. this is true i love my alienware and it is in perfect physical condition. i will look into a repair then buy the 980ms then sell the 2 fixed 7970ms if i can. as for the dual PSU mod what effect doest it have on my current setup? would it improve my 7970m Xfire performance?
  19. its most likely due to being snapped off when removing them to harsh. it seems that they messed up and decide they need to move the laptop on to someone else. the clips are part of the motherboard. But you can use good quality sticky tape to hold it into place. its dodgy but it works well. if you need help with pulling it apart or putting it back together let me know and i can make a picture thread.
  20. .... im guessing its gone. Rip LCD you were so beautiful and crisp. burned out before your time.
  21. Hello everyone. I own an alienware 18x r2 with dual 7970m crossfire. i loved this laptop so much and always looked after it. recently the computer died. the dreaded 8 beeps. I tried everything i could to fix it without getting in to re-soldering. I am very tech savy (IT technician) but this is beyond anything i can do. before going on these are the specs of what i have. i7 3840QM 24GB DDR3 1866mhz ram 1x256 samsung Eve mSata 3x WD 7200RPM Intel Dual band AC 7260 vPro 2X AMD 7970m So i see 3 possible opportunities here. - Fix the PC with a Est cost of $300 and move on (cheapest, no power gain) - Fix PC and swapping GPU with Dual 980ms Est 1.6k (expensive, substantial gains have 2xGPU) - Replace entire PC with a new one with the specs i want Est 2.7k+ (Very expensive, great gains, WILL WORK most likely 1xGPU) Option 2 im not entirely sure on the process but some of the people on this forum are incredibly impressive so ill need to start a thread with Pics and steps with help from a few others. hopefully this way, others can learn as i do and use it as a guide. what do you guys think i should do?
  22. Gday, from Australia! Im the proud owner of a republic of games G750JH with a GTX 780M OC via custom vbios (Massive thanks to Klem, fella is a legend!) and i also own an alienware 18xR2 with dual 7970m OC and love them both. this site has been so far the best place ive ever seen for vbios modifications.
