  1. Could you redo the 3Dmark13 FS-test while using the manual fan profile in MSI Afterburner? I'd really love to see what temps you get, It'd be saintly appreciated! As for the modding: Wow, outstanding job buddy! You've done all mods that havn't dared to do yet. /jacobsson
  2. @Khenglish Thanks for the rapid answer! Excuse me if this sounds ignorant but my plan is to dump/flash BIOS directly from the MOBO, not de-solder the BIOS chip at all. Is that out the question? :S
  3. Hi guys! Sorry for my absence, haven't got my thumbs out to dump my full BIOS+ME yet. I do have all the components needed for it but I lack the knowledge to do it atm. What I planned to use is a Rasbberry pi model B and a SOIC 8 clip. @Khenglish Is there a good guide you know of that you would recommend to me? I did confirm that the BIOS chip (MX25L6406E if remember correctly) is confirmed in the romflash wiki list. Thanks!
  4. @ha1o2surfer Glad to see that I could return the favor! I'm still jealous of your cooling ability so going to attempt sandwiching a second heatpipe on top of the original CPU heatsink. Hopefully the fan can manage cooling off some extra heat with two pipes leading to it. It's gonna take some dremmel work though
  5. This is of course not very useful to hear after a disaster like this (been there myself), but always double/triple check with a multimeter for polarity and use a marking pen, especially when there are only yellow cables. I really hope you manage to revive your board with the 107C.
  6. @ha1o2surfer Hi buddy, I finally have some time over! These are my steps: 1. Use DCU to clean out all NVIDIA drivers in safe mode (it takes you there automatically) 2. Before rebooting, enable safe mode flag (Run -> MSconfig -> System start -> Safe mode) 3. Reboot to safe mode: Install the new NVIDIA drivers only for 660M (no eGPU atttached) 4. Reboot to safe mode again: Attach eGPU and use the "I have a disk -method" from device manager (point out the "NVdisp" inside "\Win8_WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver\") 5. Un-tick enable safe mode in MSconfig and reboot 6. You should be done! EDIT: Just received my new ATX since the old one had coil whine. I encountered a lot of "Driver not less or equal", almost drove me insane! I followed my own recipe + I took the latest HD graphics drivers from ASUS and It really helped me, now everything is back to normal again!
  7. @inquisitivewayfare For a GTX 980 the Dell DA-2 is out of the question, so I must recommend this little beast of PSU: Silverstone SFX SX600 It measures 125 mm (W) × 63.5 mm (H) × 100 mm (D) and delivers 600W!
  8. @ha1o2surfer Hi buddy! I'm really sorry for the late reply, just started a new job so there is long hours in the beginning as you know. I'm going to write all my steps asap and tag you in the reply.
  9. The XM3C3 is unfortunately 19V not 12V, I've looking into modding it for a while now but that takes some serious reverse engineering though, Found an expert in the subject and he said it'd too time consuming figure it out (he opened it up to investigate). If it was possible (which it is) to mod it'd be the smoothest solution for a fanless PSU ever! That A4 proto is really something! I too have plans to make something similar but in the Barebone route instead: Building a barebone mini itx and route the x16 slot outside the enclosure just like an eGPU, which can be detached/attached depending on application (wouldn't work with hotplugging though). The challenge in my opinion would be CPU cooling in such small form factor. EDIT: The more i look at his design, the more I love it! Thanks for sharing this.
  10. @timohour I doesn't hurt to ask him, sometimes you're lucky =) I was actually referring to yoybuy and aliexpress (eBay if possible), I been done a lot of shopping there of the more rare kind. If you're looking for 900p 14" LVDS screens there are a lot to choose from: LCD Panel Advanced Search - Panelook.com
  11. Me too, been playing Far Cry 4 from beginning to end twice + borderlands 2 etc etc. =)
  12. Yes, there is a language boundary that complicates things regarding fine details when shopping from China. I must say though that my experience from Chinese sellers are very good and they are often willing to help you, like providing images of the item before shipping etc. This would eliminate sending the wrong model or item, a screen in this case. So far I have never been scammed so I'd rather take my chances buying a 1080p panel from China over being stuck with a 720p screen from eBay =) I did find your model from eBay though: New 14" 14 0" Laptop LED LCD Screen Panels Display LP140WH8 TLA1 TL A1 | eBay Of course one would like to see some more details of the item from the seller before purchase.
  13. @timohour I could only find one single panel that matches your description: LVDS, 1920x1080, 14.00" (it's 2CH though): LP140WH8-TLA1
  14. @Tech Inferno Fan Did I violate any rules from my last post about adding extra power to the Akitio? Good to know why it got deleted. Sorry my bad, my post was made in the Macbook Experience for some reason.
  15. It's actually more straight forward than you might think. Just connect a powered riser, measure the solder points of the riser (behind the often blue tape) and trace them to the solder points of the Akitio x16 slot. In this way you know exactly how the capacitor (you should use capacitors for stability) and wires should connect and be soldered. Sent from my iPhone
  16. @elpresidenteffg You might also try this too (I don't need to disable the dGPU for my G46VW): 1. Boot w/o eGPU attached 2. Connect eGPU (with it a monitor attached) -> GPU fan spins up and then settles, no output external monitor 3. Safe remove method and disconnect eGPU/TB-cable 4. Re-connect eGPU/TB-cable, GPU spins up again, settles and external screen output works.
  17. OK, That is interesting, I can't really say why it stresses your CPU that much, I could be due to a bad link between the eGPU and your system, you don't perhaps have a secondary TB-cable to test with? Regarding the sound issue, often you don't want to transfer the sound through the HDMI of the eGPU since it occupies bandwidth of your graphical performance. I always use my internal headphone jack to ensure highest eGPU performance (I even disable the HDMI sound completely to ensure this). I'm not very familiar with the OSX environment so I can't really help you there, but you could check if you have secondary sound card (probably named High definition audio or similar) showing up in your hardware settings of OSX? If so, you might have to manually set that one as your default sound card in order to have sound via eGPU. You might get a better answer here; http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/7910-diy-egpu-macbook-experiences.html
  18. Please try the "plug-unplug-method" like this: 1.) Boot w/o eGPU attached (*) 2.) Connect eGPU TB-cable (with external monitor attached) -> GPU fan spins up and then settles -> If no output to external monitor, continue to 3.) 3.) Use Safe removal method (just like thumb drive removal) and disconnect the TB-cable from the system, wait 3 seconds. 4.) Re-connect eGPU/TB-cable, GPU fans spins up again and settles, any external screen output? If not redo 3.) + 4.) one more time. Any difference? * Regarding 1.) is it mandatory to boot w/ eGPU attached when using MAC? If so do that,
  19. I never got so far as using Optimus tbh. If you need (I don't think you do) there is guide in my thread regarding a fresh install of win 8.1 instead of 8. Sent from my iPhone
  20. That sounds very interesting, are you coding PCIe low level drivers for the new USB 3.1 standard? Max $100 can be hard to find when talking thunderbolt, I'd gladly loan you my Thundertek PX if it wasn't to be included in a Mac Mini eGPU project.
  21. Heey, that's great news! It's kind of a random "fix" but I don't consider it a mayor problem. Thanks for the kind words! Please do share eventual findings regarding optimus.
  22. @ha1o2surfer Hi Buddy! I'm running a GTX970 on my G46VW, one thing I always have to for it to work is this (no setup 1.x required for me, BIOS v209): 1. Boot w/o eGPU attached 2. Connect eGPU (with it a monitor attached) -> GPU fan spins up and then settles, no output external monitor 3. Safe remove method and disconnect eGPU/TB-cable 4. Re-connect eGPU/TB-cable, GPU spins up again, settles and external screen output works. It's worth a try at least!
  23. The selection is very limited, the adapter has to have 12V output, small form factor, fanless, affordable and ~24A (If these conditions aren't met then an ATX PSU would probably do a better job). Finding such ac-adapter has given me headache for a long time! I've looked into the 19V Alienware m18x 330W AC-adapter and I've found an expert in this area, modifying the output voltage would be too advanced even for him, plus the adapter is craazy expensive too. However, there is still one VERY interesting option left, which I'm now investigating: The 280W PS3 PSU (the model with 12V 23.5A and plastic housing). This PSU can be had for $10 - $15 incl. shipping and might be able to support a GTX 970! It will need some DIY cabling first, I'll report back when I've managed to test it (have it at home on my table ready for mod).
  24. @nicktheduke Can you monitor the CPU usage when the eGPU is active in OSX? Is the CPU fan running harder than w/o eGPU attached?
  25. @Mocha_Bean If you follow my signature you might find some interesting stuff in there, for instance how to see if it's TB or not ( I just went to an Apple store and tested my G46VW on a TB-display).
