  1. Ty nando, your contributions are mainly what has been holding me back for going for the beast, because yours is pretty much the name to follow for eGPU DIY setups. The only problem is that getting the pe4C and enclosures for it is a huge hassle due to its lack of availability on amazon, thus incurring the much higher costs of purchase from bplus directly + customs costs etc. Which is why I've been trying to collect more feedback on the (MUCH) more accessible for me Beast, which would cost me around 45 EUR (I already sourced a PSU for it), would arrive fast in europe and offers some easier enclosure options. But if I run into signalling issues... well, that would ruin everything. *sigh* wallet, y u so small?
  2. I'm having a hard time figuring out whether the Beast has resolved most Gen2 signaling issues or not. I see some people using the V6/V7 to some success with various machines, including the 2570p, but there are others running into trouble, and I can't seem to figure out if the Beast is affected or not. I use a 2570p

  7. I'm at F61-something and am wondering whether there's a point in trying to rollback, other than just to use your DSDT patch file. Thing is, I'm using Windows 8.1 on MBR, was considering converting to UEFI, but am really having a whopper of a time figuring out the DSDT patching and the ASPM patching as well. I'm trying to edit the dsdt.aml file I dumped with acpidump, but I see none of the same types of strings and don't know what to delete. Then I switched to DSDT Editor and there's 144 errors preventing me from compiling and saving the file. I'm trying to find a DSDT clean-up guide but am having some trouble. I want to run a GTX-970 at some point in it, although the first card I'll be using with it is a r9-270x. EDIT: Got an error-free dsdt.aml using acpidump and iasl. Trying to load it in now to see what happens. After which I want to enable ASPM somehow. EDIT2: SUCCESS. Huh. This was so easy. I just needed to move one entry from the DSDT to another place in the file and it compiled right off, i have the large memory entry in device manager now. So I should be good to use pretty much any eGPU right now?
  8. Here you go mate. The inductors in the top of the pic (highlighted red) are the source for the 5V. Make sure you have a multimeter to check which trace exactly. I just soldered a wire on the 5V trace. I think it's from the SATA ports. http://imgur.com/vNtnUmp

  11. Thanks for sharing, this looks like a great way to get ASPM benefits without a whole lot of hassle. Off the top of your head, do you think this might be usable for Windows 8.1 as well?

  13. Been flirting with eGPU DIY for a long while now but never had a machine to do it with, tomorrow I'm shooting up the $$ for a 2570P. What did it for me is the possibility of maintaining the storage options I had on my w230ss (SSD + HDD + 3G) so long as I use the caddy for the second storage device. It was either this or x230, but x230 required too many storage sacrifices. The fact that I can upgrade to a quad core definitely helped make the choice. I'm going to be having so much reading to do to get all the tweaks right and the eGPU going
  14. Um, you might be throttling? What's the voltage on the card and what CPU are you running? What vbios are you using and what card vendor?
  15. Depends. For example the fan on my machine was controlled through voltage pulsing. If it didn't get 'signal', it didn't spin. My recommendation is, look for and purchase some Coollaboratory Liquid MetalPad or Liquid Ultra metal paste. The pad is good if your heatsink mount is good and flush. Otherwise, use the paste.
  16. If an I3 overheats in this machine, I'd seriously advise you to check the paste job and heatsink seating. That's like a seriously low TDP CPU. Although, yes, if that doesn't solve your issues maybe a better fan controller would. In this case, the fan was already seriously undervolted and spinning at a low speed, that's why the controller was an option. If your brother's machine doesn't have a similar issue, you'd have to find alternative solutions.

  19. As far as I'm aware, the problem with m15x and 7970m is motherboard and PSU related. First of all I assume you have a 150W PSU, which is not really enough to handle the 7970m + an i7 CPU properly (draw is up to 180-200w). So you would need a modded 240W PSU. In addition, I remember talks of the power circuitry on the m15x mobo needing some kind of modding to properly allow the 7970m to draw power on the m15x, or running heavily undervolted (0.95 volts on GPU). But now that I think of it, svl7 had/has a m15x with 7970m, and he's sure to have made an awesome thread on this. Search the forum here, it's his home after all
  20. GDDR5 values are 4 times the value of the base clock. So yes, the base is 900MHz base but there's some mojo going on, and you multiply that by 4. It gets confusing when doing big OC's though.
  21. Why undervolt the 675mx? It's already running under the potential of the GK104 chip. Well, I can understand wanting to minimize heat and power draw, but really, if you can go that high undervolted, I can imagine that you may touch 1GHz @ stock voltage... seems a pity. And 4400MHz memory is already quite fast afaik.

I'll take your word for it bro, but I perfectly remember going from the 580M overclocked (to about 3.6GHz) to the 920xm/940xm overclocked (to similar 3.6-3.8GHz) and I most of all remember everything going up from 'acceptable' performance to pretty much blazing fast, and having that pesky max 40fps average go to a solid 60fps, with only occasional slowdowns into the low 40's. You're bottlenecking that beautiful beautiful overclocked card bro. Really, I'd advise you to look into at least a cheap 720qm to see the impact of quad-core... you can get it pretty cheap on ebay: Original TOSHIBA A665-S6070 Intel Core i7 CORE I7-720QM 1.6GHZ Laptop CPU | eBay or if you're lucky, even cheaper on forums. I once saw one go for 35$.
