My temporary solution is to boot Chrome with '--disable-d3d11' Runs fine. If I don't do that and run Chrome normally, fullscreening a Youtube video will crash the laptop entirely.

Hi guys I've been happily using my mPCIe EXP GDC v8 + GTX 970 with my Thinkpad T430s using the internal display. Performance was fine. I recently got an external monitor, and, as long as I leave the HDMI cable from the GTX 970 unplugged at boot (and plug it in after the initial Thinkpad boot logo), it boots up and works (mostly) fine. My problem When I started using Chrome on the external monitor, I noticed it was very laggy. Like moving through treacle - scrolling is laggy, highlighting text is laggy, opening new tabs is slower than normal, videos play oddly (low FPS?). When I tried to full-screen Youtube videos, the whole laptop will crash. I've "fixed" this by turning off Hardware Acceleration in Chrome, but now Youtube etc. videos have tearing. If I have the external monitor connected, but I view Chrome (with hardware acceleration) on the laptop's internal display, it seems to run normally and doesn't crash. Does anyone know why? Is there anything I can tweak with nVidia (latest 970m drivers) / Windows / Chrome to get things running normally? Thanks

Thanks! The GB package actually had a 6pin to 6pin + 6+2pin so I was good to go. Now I have as pare 6 to 8 pin adapter turning up tomorrow haha As for internal display.. it works (I installed GTX 970M listed drivers off the bat) but I'm wondering what sort (if any) performance increase I'll see if I use an external monitor? If I start using a monitor do I need to change drivers? This is GPU-Z (running the render test) does it look ok? 2.0 x16 @ 1 2.0 ?

Hi guys. Wanted to check a couple of things with you: 1) I've ordered a EXP GDC "BEAST" "with power supply" which I assume is a Dell DA-2 or similar. I plan to use it with a Thinkpad T430s mPCIe and a Gigabyte "mini" GTX 970. My card has a 8pin PCIe power socket and the package I think comes with one power cable for 6pin - I need to order a 6pin to 8pin adapter, right? Do I need anything else? 2) My laptop doesn't have a dGPU, just the HD4000 - is it possible to use the internal display, or am I forced to use external display? Thanks!

On the topic of CPUs, I've been looking at a few different MBPs to go with - you seem to have experience with at least a few - I was wondering if you had any broad comments about the differences observed between i5 dual core and i7 MBPs, and I'm also interested in the performance difference between the i7 clock speeds available - starting at 2.2 and going up to maybe 2.6 or 2.8 base clock I think?

I'm looking to build a setup similar to this. Can you tell me if the Gigabyte mini 970 is able to use Optimus for internal screen usage (as opposed to having to use an external monitor)? And you don't happen to have any benchmarks of Windows games do you? I'd be looking at GTA 5, Witcher 3, Arma 3 as examples of things, or just more standardised benchmarks. Also, more photos would be appreciated while I try to wrap my head around the power modifications/cables that are needed to power the GPU and the enclosure. Thanks

Arma 3 and DayZ (standalone and Arma 2 derived mods) are VERY CPU intensive - Arma 2 almost exclusively. Arma 3 is a bit more GPU dependent depending on your settings, but regardless of OP's results I'd look to CPU for the cause of any potential FPS woes.

Thanks, Tech Inferno Fan. I am actually still 'shopping' for my set up, but I was hoping to use a Thinkpad T/X/W/P(?) for an eGPU set up. Slightly off-topic, but do you know of any Thinkpad that would pair well with a 970 for internal display gaming? GTA5, Witcher 3, Arma 2/3, Dota 2 etc.

gothic860 - do you have any idea why the Atikito didn't work with the Thinkpad? I was hoping to get a W* series that has TB2 and use that my eGPU connection, but I can only see people using the EC (with low efficiency) or the more expensive (and very hard to source in the UK) Sonnet EE SE-II. My main goal is Thinkpad w/ internal display eGPU (probably a 970).

This is a fairly broad question, but does anyone know of a relatively modern Lenovo Thinkpad that has stable, decent performance eGPU implemention from the X/T/W series of their laptops? I had planned on getting a W451~ that has TB2 with the hope of using an Akitio enclosure, but I can't find anyone who has used it successfully. Looking at the X/T series, the EC implementations all seem to take *huge* performance hits, especially when using the internal display (which I what I hope to use). TLDR; anyone know a Thinkpad X/T/W with a stable, decent performance TB or EC implementation? EDIT: in terms of GPU I'm open, but would prefer to use a GTX 970 of some description.

Thanks, this is useful - I'll have a read now. They seem like they will be priced above the W series which is about as much as I'd like to go if possible (£1100~). As a W520 owner, do you have an eGPU setup yourself?
