We have a Liva X at work and it's a neat little nano PC. It's so tiny it can be velcro'd to the back of a display screen, so it doesn't have to have a footprint at all. It is good enough to be a HTPC and can be used for digital signage, but I wouldn't want to use it as a primary PC. It doesn't really have enough processing power to multitask unfortunately.

I'm also interested in more details about eGPU's for the Oculus. We got a kit here at work about 6 months ago, but it's kinda been sitting on the shelf since then. Just haven't had much time to play with it, but we're getting ready to put together a new PC to run it again. I would love to know if anyone here as much experience with it.

Lenovo is a pretty good bang for buck brand. I will admit I probably wouldn't buy their stuff personally, but at work most of our PC's are Lenovo's and they have been reliable. I'm just not a fan of their styling.

I've read a lot of threads about the standard wifi card that comes with the Y510P's but we haven't had issues with any of the dozen laptops that we have. I'm in the process of upgrading to the 7260ac cards, but only because we have a need to go 5ghz.

I have a macbook air and can completely understand why your gf would want one. There are lots of nice Windows ultrabooks available that are as sleek as the MBA that would be cheaper and just as useful. I bought my MBA a few years strictly for the hardware alone when there were only a few ultrabooks on the market....I bought it to run Windows. The Chromebooks are good for basic web surfing but pretty limited as far as processing power. The only thing they can do better than your typical tablet is typing, so they're kind of a waste of money. For a student, I would recommend a Windows-based laptop that has the longest battery life possible.

We have about a dozen of the Y510P's at my work place. They're all almost 2yrs old now and have been very reliable. We rent them out so they've been through some rough use. Some of the cases/housings are dented but haven't had any failures yet. The massive heatsinks are a big plus in my industry. They've managed to run all day in the smallest cabinets and enclosures with little to no issues. There are lots of reports of issues with the standard wifi card they come with, but we haven't had any issues. I'm actually in the process of upgrading all the wifi cards now in our Y510's and Y570's.
