  1. @goalque Ignore my last post, I just did the steps again and realised the first time I clicked quit on the nVidia uninstaller, so your script removed the kexts. Just booted without the web-driver this time and all monitors are working. Will run the benchmarking again and see if it crashes.
  2. @goalque After uninstalling it booted without my 2 monitors attached to eGPU, second reboot had all monitors & claims to be running nVidia web driver 346.03.01b07. Ran the Heaven benchmark again and it still crashed, but got a different kernel error: Anonymous UUID: 196D92EF-CF6A-8DCF-57AD-5102FA398F58 Sun Sep 27 13:44:56 2015 *** Panic Report *** panic(cpu 2 3. Hi all, I'm having some problems with my setup when using the eGPU in OS X. Running any intensive games or benchmarks causes a kernel panic, as seen below. The setup is using a reference GTX 660 inside an Akitio box, powered by a barrel plug connected to a 300W PSU. I don't recall having any instability issues in Windows, although I have re-installed the whole system and not used bootcamp for a number of weeks now. Does anybody have any ideas about what this could be? I'm tempted to upgrade the card in the hope that it will resolve the problems, but am reluctant to spend £300+ to find the same issue occurs. 4. Hey. Just updated to El Capitan Public Beta 6 (15A278b). Script works fine with the existing nvidia beta web driver. Can't provide output of the script as I uninstalled my drivers before running the script (doh!) Cheers
  5. Hey goalque, just had a quick play with this and found that the script doesn't seem to run on my version of El Capitan (15A262e). I had some problems disabling SIP, but eventually managed it by booting into the recovery OS, launching terminal and running "csrutil disable".Your script was still telling me SIP was enabled, but I knew it wasn't so had a quick look into the shell script. It seems the command you used to determine if SIP was enabled has changed output. Mine is:Daniels-MacBook-Pro: Desktop Dan$ nvram csr-active-config csr-active-config w%00%00%00The scrip checks for g%00%00%00, whereas my build requires w%00%00%00. I'll look to submit a pull request to github sometime tomorrow unless you get to it before me.All working great now :)
  6. Tried some fancy installation with Ubuntu at the weekend with the aim to run OSX and Windows in VM's and use qemu-kvm to perform pcie-passthrough. In the end I managed to corrupt all OS's on the disk and started again. I'm looking to hopefully use OSX as my primary OS, but noticed very poor fps performance last night when trying to play League of Legends. It seems I'm getting better performance when using the OS X drivers, not the nVidia Web Driver. As the OS X drivers are for AMD on this machine, I assume this means that the m370x is powering the external display. I'm finding debugging very difficult without a nice utility like GPU-Z. I'll be posting some additional updates/benchmarks tonight and hopefully I can get to the bottom of this.
  7. Thanks for this script Goalque. Just used this successfully on my 2015 15" MBPr with GTX 660.
  8. Hi all, You may have seen my other thread where I got an eGPU working on my 2011 Macbook pro. Based on this success, I decided to take the plunge and do a full desktop replacement, replacing my own-build Alienware x51 desktop for a 2015 15" Macbook Pro with AMD discrete GPU. Spec of desktop & new MBP Item/Machine Alienware x51 2015 Macbook Pro 15" CPU i5 3570k i7 4780HQ RAM 16GB 16GB Storage 128 SSD/750GB HDD 512GB m.2 SSD GPU GTX 660 AMD R9 M370X + GTX 660 My previous build had me using my eGPU from a (poorly) made aluminium case for portability so that I could take the build on a flight to Sweden for the Dreamhack Summer 2015 festival. For this build, I knew I was unlikely to get nVidia Optimus running, so this eGPU would be primarily desk-bound. As a result, I opened my AKiTiO case to enhance cooling and provide a more secure implementation. Benchmarks to follow (I will update my previous thread also!) Ran benchmarks using free version of 3DMark, settings may be incorrect as I have not paid to change the default res, I wonder if anybody could confirm if I need to buy it or not? Win 8.1 eGPU 660 External Monitor 3DMark13 Fire Strike 1.1 - 4211 Sky Diver 1.0 - 12855 Cloud Gate 1.1 - 25386 Ice Storm 1.2 - 173245 Win 10 eGPU 660 External Monitor 3DMark13 Fire Strike 1.1 - 4215 AMD Radeon R9 M370X video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-4870HQ Processor,Apple Inc. Mac-06F11F11946D27C5 I'll be upgrading the machine to Windows 10 tomorrow evening and will re-run benchmarks for comparison. I also plan to purchase either a 970,980 or 980ti in the near future and benchmarks for the card I choose to purchase will be added. Re-worked desk & purchased a laptop-cooler:
  9. Hi Svcti, TheGrreatGatsby has another thread in the Apple Implementation Guide also which is more up to date: http://forum.techinferno.com/implementation-guides-apple/10489-2015-15-mbp-radeon-r9-m370x-gtx970%4016gbps-tb2-akitio-thunder2-win8-1-%5Bgatsby%5D.html
  10. Hi there, Could you answer the following questions and include the answers in your original post? 1. When you are using the MBP normally without the eGPU, do you run with the dGPU in Windows? (As in, do you have to boot into OSX, or is Windows fine?) 2. Your post refers to a work-around for the internal LCD, could you confirm that you can power it from the eGPU? Thanks in advance and well done on being one of the first to try this out!
  11. Hey Frico, I'd be really interested to see if you can get an eGPU working on this mac, especially if you can get AMD's dynamic switching to use the eGPU to power the internal display.
  12. Yes I used the components just with the lid open on the case Added some details shot for you, let me know if you want any other angles etc
  13. I hope your other idea for an eGPU works out! The model you mention: G501JQ-DS71, do you mean G501JW-DS71? I want to make sure I purchase the correct one if I do decide to buy this laptop
  14. Sure, I'll take a bunch of shots of the componenets, with and without the foam and take some accurate dimensions of all the components used. Will have to wait till tonight though as am at work now Would you like me to run any benchmarks at all?
  15. Hey Luke, when they opened it they just moved all the foam out of the way as it was completely covering all the components, then asked me if it was just computer components and I said yes Once they realised thats all it was, I was fine to move on, just a little annoyed at how long it took them to search people's stuff infront of me. They swabbed inside my case & the laptop, presumably for illegal substances but I believe that's standard practice if they search anything Also, it wasn't opened going from Sweden > UK, so I guess they realised from the scanner that it was only computer components
  16. Ah damn man :/ Sorry to hear that, must be really frustrating I think some of the US versions of the g501 do come with thunderbolt but I'm struggling to find much information out online. I'll let you know if I find anywhere that sells a thunderbolt one if you are interested?
  17. Hi all, this post is a placeholder where I will detail the system & set-up I built and took with me to Dreamhack Summer 2015 in Sweden. A picture of it set-up: WIP: Hardware Purchase AKiTiO enclosure, GPU (I re-used a desktop one), PSU, male/female molex cable & solderless DC power connector. Find a metal paperclip Open up AKiTiO enclosure and remove PCIE board using a small screwdriver. Use the paper clip trick in the 20/24 PIN PSU motherboard connector to enable PSU to turn on. NOTE: The below image is for my PSU, this is the usual configuration, but I would strongly recommend you refer to the manual that comes with the PSU to ensure you are grounding the correct PINOUT. Custom "Enclosure" For my trip to Sweden (I live in the UK so flew with this), I purchased an aluminium carry case to roughly match the dimensions I needed. The case came with pre-perforated foam inside and made it incredible easy to 'create' suitable sizes of foam to secure all the components for the flight. This particular GPU fits snugly inside the case with just enough space for the thunderbolt cable. (dimensions of all components to be added) PSU - 125mm x 10mm x H 65mm (excluding cables, modular power supply, or the 220W Dell power adapter mod would work best to replace mine) GPU - 255mm x 125mm x H ~35mm (70mm instead of 35mm when attached to the PCIE board) Case - External - 330mm x 290mm x H 135mm - Intermal - 310mm x 250mm x 85mm The GPU was "mounted" on some angled cardboard as everything didn't quite fit, I would guess an angle also helps with the air-flow around the GPU. The case went neatly in a carry-on bag for my flight (55cm x 40cm x 20cm) with room for my MBP in the front (pictures to be attached) For anybody interested, leaving the UK they did search the case, so if you plan to fly with this build in some extra time! Software -Windows 8.1 Installation Install Windows 8.1 using EFI by following this guide. I opted to wipe all files and have yet to re-install OSX in a separate partition ----------------------- PAY ATTENTION TO THIS PART. I wasted at least 5 hours as the bootcamp Apple provide for this age of Macbook is not EFI-enabled and I didn't follow other guides properly! Shut down laptop. Plug eGPU into Macbook & turn on the PSU Turn on Macbook & boot into Windows. Check device manager to see two items under 'Display Adapters'. Download latest nVidia drivers for your GPU from nVidia's driver page here Restart Macbook & boot into Windows. Check Device Manager and you should see the name of your GPU under display adapters: If all goes well and you installed native EFI, Optimus should work every time you boot. You will also likely find your sound drivers for the internal speakers no longer work. If you are unsure if Optimus is working, follow this guide which will should an icon in the taskbar, when hovered it will say what is using the dedicated graphics card. To ensure all apps would use the eGPU, I changed the global setting in the nVidia configuration program to run with the dedicated card.
  18. Hey Silver, Not sure if this has been answered in another thread but can't seem to find it. Does your Asus rog g501 have a thunderbolt 2 or thunderbolt 1 port? I'm seriously considering this as a desktop replacement atm and have just completed a 13" Macbook Pro 2011 eGPU build. Thanks
