  1. I just tested the Dell D2A adapter with EXP GDC Beast 8.4 and GTX 1060 6GB on Lenovo Y580 and it works great without any modifications. Plugged the 8pin from adapter into the 8pin on GDC then used a 6pin male to male to connect the GDC to 1060, voila all works great. I now on to design and print an enclosure for the GDC and 1060 Mini. The Dell adapter I have to say is a lot larger than I expected but it beats the 900W spare Antec one I was using before. This setup also works on an HP DM4 laptop. I started out trying to make my GTX 590 work as external card but unfortunately because of the dual nature of that GPU I couldn't get it to work in any configuration. The GTX 590 was detected on the eGPU and both adapters showed up in device manager but games just would not use the 590 on any of the laptops I tried it on. Because I switched to 1060 I am now also able to switch to the Dell power adapter for an overall more portable solution.
  2. Hitachi makes some great drives for NAS that have specs for contiunuous operation and that are the same price as the WD green but at higher RPM. I don't think the NAS classification is a necessity but you should probably try to keep drive specs as close to each other as possible.

    Monitors

My primary is an old Dell 2408WFP... best monitor I've ever had. Waiting until a 120Hz+ IPS screen is widely available to make a switch.
  4. Run GTA V on Geforce 590 and it's running perfect with high texture quality and all other settings on high. 1920x1200 resolution. I was quite suprised actually as I was worried that the card was already outdated The VRAM usage shows over what's available but so far no issues with crashing or otherwise.
  5. RE: http://forum.techinferno.com/implementation-guides-apple/7685-2013-11-macbook-air-titan%4010gbps-tb1-sonnet-ee-iii-d-osx10-9-4-%5B-kryzaach%5D.html How much of the GPU power is "wasted" due to it being attached externally via TB1 vs being native in a PC? I'm asking because I have a 13' MBA and have looked briefly in the past at some solutions but I found that the whole power thing prevented top cards from being used. Would you be able to post some benchmarks or fps numbers?
  6. I second this question. I have a couple of Y580's with the 660m in them but as they are starting to show the age what would be a good and budget concoious replacement today?
  7. I have several old laptops and just need to get rid of one of them. I'm trying to decide between HP Elitebook 8440p with I7 and a Dell E4310 with I5. Same generation CPUs. The main differences are: size (Dell is smaller), Screen resolution (HP has better resolution), CPU (I5 vs I7), ?Number of ports (Dell has only 1 USB port vs HP that has a ton), lit up keyboard on the Dell vs an old school light on top o fthe HP screen, the HP has a discreet old Nvidia card. Both have 8gb RAM and I'll put either a 128 or 256GB SSD into the one I'll keep. I'm going to use it as a 3rd laptop of mine solely to run security tools on (Kali Linux etc). I used to have the HP as a traveling laptop for games but my MB Air outperforms it and the thing is huge, the only benefit is I don't care if the HP gets stolen or I lose it . Anyway, any thoughts? -Abak
