  1. Hi, I've got an AKiTiO Thunder2 that I've been using for my eGPU in a Mid 2014 Macbook Pro 15", happily and very successfully. It looks like I probably won't need it for much longer (replacing my kit with dedicated PC). I'm UK based and wondering if anyone here would be interested in purchasing it (preferably also UK based)? I'd probably include the barrel connector and cabling I used to make it work as an eGPU along with it (not the gfx card!!). I had it shipped from the US originally, as it seems to be almost impossible to source one of these directly in the UK. My setup currently is: Macbook Pro 15" with dedicated GPU (GT 750M)/16GB RAM, 2.8Ghz i7 Asus Geforce GTX 980 Strix (https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus-geforce-gtx-980-directcu-ii-oc-strix-4096mb-gddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-354-as.html) Akitio Thunder2 enclosure. ATX Power Supply. I use the graphics card outside of the Akitio shell, it just stands on my desk - never got around to a proper solution (though I bought a CoolerMaster Elite with the intention of housing it). The enclosure is only a few months old. I have the original box and packaging - the product is essentially in perfect condition - I placed it on my desk on day one and haven't had to touch it since. I boot in to Windows (8 and 10) to play games with the eGPU. Can't say I've noticed any game I've played not working with the eGPU. The only point of friction I have is booting the Macbook to begin with - it can sometimes take up to 3 attempts before it loads. So when I power on, sometimes I get a black screen and nothing happens, and I have to restart - the whole process takes only a few seconds on each attempt. I never tried to diagnose the problem because it just didn't bother me enough. It usually works on the first attempt - especially if you plug in the thunderbolt cable when the Macbook reaches the screen where you choose OSX or Windows (holding down alt). Restarting the machine doesn't seem to cause any problems (e.g. if I'm in Windows with it all working, and reboot, it continues to work without hassle). A splattering of some of the games I've played with this setup include: GTA V Unreal Tournament (UE4 Beta) Bioshock Infinite Crysis 3 Borderlands 2 Skyrim Left 4 Dead Portal 2 Various other Source engine games Killing Floor 2 Let me know if more information is wanted, or anyone is interested... Thanks, Anon.
  2. Thanks! - I've been over that thread before - it took me a short time to realise you had updated with eBay links. Is anyone able to share an opinion on the rating of those terminal/barrel connectors? Should they be up to the task for passing the ~85W @12v?
  3. Hi all - been following the forums for a while - have gone ahead and ordered the Akitio to go with my Mid 2014 15" rMBP! While it ships, I've been looking in to getting a suitable 5.5/2.5mm barrel connector to hook up to a Molex connector from my ATX PSU - but I have a concern that Google hasn't yet alleviated - the connectors that I can find don't seem to be rated to take the Amps that will be passed through them if a Gfx card is taking 75W at the slot. I might be doing the maths wrong - but at 12v, to get ~85watts (75+10), that will be 7+ amps? Most of the 5.5/2.5 connectors seem to be for lower power devices. The power supply that comes with the Akitio is good for 5Amps, so assume the barrel connector on it is too - but what about 7? Or have I entirely lost the plot? I'm totally open to being called out as an idiot on this. Has anyone got any recommendations for a suitable barrel and molex connector? I'm in the UK which seems to make things like this even harder to find. Thank you!
