  1. If you need just the fan I found this: New Lenovo Ideapad Y510P Series CPU Fan MG60120V1-C250-S99 For the fan and heat sink assembly they also have: New Lenovo Ideapad Y510P Series CPU Fan with Heatsink 90202747 This is tempting to get just so I could apply good thermal paste....
  2. I would go with Clevo because you can usually customize them to precisely what you want. You pay for the extras so you get to pick which options matter to you instead of the company deciding what is important.
  3. I have a y510p and like others have said I joined this forum because of it. I have a wireless AC router and need to flash the BIOS to be able to install a wireless AC card in this laptop. For a PC that is kind of ridiculous. I bought a Windows PC because I don't like having to upgrade the entire device when one thing is bothering me, but I guess that Lenovo doesn't feel that way. I feel like I bought a 1980's Mustang with 700 horsepower. There are problems with the fit and finish (track pad, cooling, plastic pretending to be metal), but this thing is fast as hell. I have really liked it, but there are compromises. The battery life is abysmal. SLI doesn't work with every game. The bezel around the screen reflects so much light that it doesn't matter if it is a matte screen (you can use the bezel as a mirror in a pinch). Lenovo support is terrible as well. I paid the extra for the accidental coverage warranty with in home repair and I regret it. The one issue that I called about they said I would have to ship the laptop out for 2 weeks so it could be repaired at their depot facility. The issue I called about was the glue separating from the top of the bezel which makes the plastic lens covering the webcam lift and causes the camera to take blurry pictures. So replacing a clip in and glue bezel is a depot level repair, why did I pay for an in home repair warranty? If I had it to do over again I would have saved my money and bought something from Sager/Clevo.
  4. I might be a little biased because I own a Surface Pro 3 i5 256gb. If you, or she, will never use the Surface Pen there is no reason to get the Surface Pro 3 over other options. That being said I love my SP3. I use mine for college (Mechanical Engineering) and it has replaced all of my paper notebooks. I am able to run Office, MatLab, Mathematica, Visual Studio, and everything else I have tried installing (I don't game on it). The throttling issues, at least for me, were solved with a firmware update. I sync everything with OneDrive and it automatically makes all of my notes and files from the Surface available to my other computers in case I want to use a bigger display or a more robust keyboard. The reason I wouldn't recommend it if you don't use the pen is because there are less expensive options that aren't as fragile. I have Microsoft Complete which covers me if I accidently drop it, but that was an extra $150. If you drop the SP3 on anything but angel feathers the screen will crack. It feels solid in the hand but there is just too much surface area, combined with not a lot of support for it to withstand a fall onto hard floors. Like I said, I love mine, but it isn't for everyone. I don't feel like it replaces my laptop, but it makes it so it doesn't leave the house. If you do decide to get one make sure to budget the extra $150 for MS Complete.
  5. I personally own the y510p and love it. I know it isn't the y410p, but same processor and video card. The processor is able to handle everything I throw at it and using the single video card is okay (not great). For me I would try to stay with the y410p simply because I hate AMD driver support. I have a HP laptop that uses an AMD video card and every time I need to update the driver something goes wrong. Usually it simply doesn't update, but there isn't any notification. For the processor comparison you can look here Intel Core i7 5500U vs 4700MQ . Other than battery life the 4700MQ is better by a fair amount.
