  1. The clip that holds the optical bay SATA strip in place is ridiculous, I'm not surprised you broke something. I had to take the drive out a few times, and it was obnoxious. I have run the M14xR2 without the drive in at all, no problems. Minor weight imbalance, but I do mean minor. No negative effect on heating/cooling. I also put a second HDD in place of the DVD, and have had no problems (see sticky at top of this subforum). You will be fine leaving drive out, just use an external DVD if you really need to. Get used to using ISO files instead...
  2. I can confirm this works, I did the same thing a few days ago, I found that no caddy would fit, so I stripped the convention SATA to optical bay SATA conversion board out of the caddy, and simply used a medical cloth tape to secure the drive to the metal optical bay bracket. Maybe more 'ghetto', but quick and easy for sure. The bracket is crewed down and the HDD doesn't move at all. All the tape really does is stop the drive from sliding, its not load bearing.
  3. I bought the <label class="product_title">Zalman STG1 Thermal Grease at Frys for $10. You get 10 applications with the bottle, its well rated, good value. Why spend $5-10 on a single use? If you google the testing, this stuff is sufficient for performance cooling. Just re-did the CPU/GPU in my Alienware M14xR2 with it. Only downsie is that Zalman is out of business as of yesterday, so stock up I guess. ;-)</label>
