  1. Could the backplate be my problem? this are pictures of my card: http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/9096/img20121202202429.jpg http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/1360/img20121202202328.jpg http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/271/img20121202202246.jpg thanks
  2. Welcome to my world, I have the same issue and haven't been able to solve it, try disabling speed step in the bios, that's the next thing I'm going to try once I get my new thermal pads. If it works, or you find another solution please post it here
  3. Hi, again, My previous technician refused to continue checking my laptop so I contacted a dell certified technical company, and the told me: The 7970m has nothing wrong, and there is not a chip getting hot when using that card in your laptop, the problem is your processor (Core I7-720QM) and the heat sink because it doesn't fit the video card. Because of this two things, the gpu isn't being cooled properly. Do you think they are right? I installed the thermal pads according to this picture: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/<wbr>56470267/7970M.jpg but in the chips located at the upper part of the picture I had to apply 3 layers of thermal pads so they could reach the heatsink. Do I need a modified heat sink in order to be able to turn on the laptop? Is my cpu incompatible with that video card? thanks in advance.
  4. Thanks for the answers, @mw86 The technician says he tried the card in another laptop and it had the same effect, heating the chip in the mobo because of the card, does anybody (maybe @svl7) know if this is normal? or won't affect the mobo in the long term? I'll be giving more details later. @frostie It hasn't burned, but what I understand is that he thinks it may... if the laptop stays on, I'll be giving the reference of the chip later, thanks
  5. After the fix he made a chip in the mobo is heating up because of the 7970m's energy consumption , to solve this the technician is asking me to let him change a transistor in the 7970m, the new one will make the card use energy with less oscillations/s should I let him do that? That doesn't make any sense to me. Thanks.
  6. Hi, Thanks for your answers, I have the latest bios and I tried with both the seller's drivers and the latest. same result, besides the laptop turns off while booting so I don't think it is a driver problem. I got the laptop checked by a technician an he said it is a mobo problem, some transistors are damaged, U$60 hope that's the price for that he also said that the new psu is damaged. the psu is not causing the freezes but it is not charging the laptop.... Can I use an m17x one? like this one? Original Genuine 240W AC Power Adapter Charger/Cord for Dell Alienware M17x | eBay
  7. Hi, thanks for your suggestion, but it freezes trying to do that, even in safe modshe, so o I don't think it is a drivers problem. Bios more info: some times it shows lines of different colors when freezing, and if I turn it on several times in a short period of time it freezes in less time and finally it doesn't even show the alien Bios screen and the scroll and caps leds blink while the num led stays on.
  8. Sometimes it freezes while booting, sometimes after login, while running a game, while doing nothing, it doesn't last 5min after login without freezing. so when I can login I a start sensor apps to check temperature. c I'm currently using a 150W adapter, could this cause to freeze? It also freezes on battery. Thanks
  9. Hi svl7, I installed the 7970 and it worked fine for half an hour and then the pc frooze and now it freezes with black screen every time I power it up. I checked the gpu themperature and it is below 40°C Could you help me to know what is wrong? Thanks
  10. Hi, I'm triying to upgrade my m15x and didn't have any luck with the 6970m, could you tell me where did you bought the 7970? thanks
