  1. Hi Sorry for the self advertising but just wanted to let anyone in the UK know my EXP GDC 6.0 is now on ebay, including dell power supply and acrylic enclosure. I brought this back from China myself in my carry on so I think it's a pretty good deal. Hopefully someone else can make good use of it! Cheers exp gdc 6.0 laptop egpu external graphics card adapter with psu | eBay?
  2. Not at all, unfortunately it's now dissasembled otherwise I would post some more detailed pics, hopefully I can describe reasonably in words... There is a video on the taobao site I linked which is worth watching though is maybe a little different as it's for the older version. In terms of the EXP GDC adapter then this screws into the bottom panel securely with standoffs. For the GPU then it's held by the pci slot and by the front end plate of the enclosure which has a tight fit with the top and bottom of the metal end plate on the GPU (not sure if end plate is the right term but the bit where you would plug in a monitor etc). So the components are pretty securely held when the enclosure is together. The only real concern is with the push fit nature of the enclosure, for 'desk like' use such as picking it up and plugging things in I found it perfectly secure, by holding it you kind of help support it. I never tried and would be less confident about how it might hold up in a bag though. Potentially I guess a small amount of glue could be used just to hold it together, but would need to be fairly minimal and not super strong so you could still take it apart without breaking it?!
  3. Hi, apologies some of this is a repeat of a recent post in the main egpu thread, which also included a quick performance comparison between laptop and desktop: http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/2109-diy-egpu-experiences-%5Bversion-2-0%5D-360.html#post105838 Main reason for posting is to let people in the UK know I’m selling my EXP GDC 6.0, including dell 220W PSU and acrylic enclosure. Also has the pci power cable, and another adapter cable. Will be in the UK (Yorkshire & London) in the next couple of weeks. PM me with an offer if interested in picking up in person, otherwise I will put it on ebay. I had a great experience with the egpu but my old laptop @ pci 1x1 was limiting things a bit, a new laptop was tempting but I didn’t really need the portability (mostly using it for gaming on the couch) so decided to put together a budget gaming/htpc in a small SG05 case using some of the bits. My acrylic enclosure is the one linked below, I bought from Taobao as in China at the moment. EXP GDC There is a note on the page saying image/video are for v5.8 but the version shipped would be for v6.0. Works well once I figured out you take the bottom part off the main adapter, and I also needed to file out one of the openings a little. I did manage to crack it on the back end panel though not really noticeable.
  4. Yep forgot about the other thread, will make a post there as well. My acrylic enclosure looks more or less the same as that on the aliexpress link, I bought from Taobao as in China at the moment. Works well once I figured out you take the bottom part off the main adapter, and I also needed to file out one of the openings a little. Can't seem to upload a photo now but just remembered I posted before, no.185 in the EXP GDC V6 discussion http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/6643-exp-gdc-v6-discussion-19.html#post95995

I think (?!) this shows the egpu was getting maybe 60% performance roughly as expected, and interestingly pci gen2 in the desktop seems to have very little benefit, I guess due to the low end graphics card. So I suppose a x1 2.0 laptop with more up to date processor would easily be able to get nearly everything out of the card as well. 6. Sometime ago I posted about my setup, thought I would share some more of myexperience after using it for a while, overall it’s been well worth it giving a new lease of life to my old laptop and re-sparking my interest in gaming for fairly minimal cost. Recap; after buying new ultrabook I hooked up old laptop to TV for home theatre/games - note for audio it's hooked up to highly recommended KEF X300A speakers via usb. Pretty old Samsung R620 with Windows 8.1 64bit, C2D 2.8Ghz T9600 (upgrade), PM45chipset, 3Gb ram, Integrated 512mb Mobility Radeon HD3300 Circa 125USD egpu, EXP GDC v6 + GTX550ti 2Gb, setup which worked straight from boot up via expresscard. The upgraded CPU was overheating and throttling down pretty quickly so I re-did the thermalpaste. It still runs hot, say 80to85oCmax, but it will run at full load now without throttling down. I tried Throttlestop and undervolting the cpu seems to help with temperatures while remaining completely stable. I understand I should be able to enable dual-ipa to get a small performance boost, I can disable EISTin the bios but so far this still hasn’t worked. I had ago with setfsb to hopefully overclock the pci bus, but it seems my PLL (SLG8SP513V) is not that flexible and only offers very big jumps and as far as I can tell no pci overclock. I couldn’t resist trying it anyway and the computer still worked (ie no bsod) moving from 266 BCLK up to 333 but when I tried a game it crashed pretty quickly back to windows so I haven’t explored further for fear of damaging something. In terms of actual gaming I’ve been playing Dirt3, Remember Me, Dishonoured, Portal 2,Far Cry 3, Crysis Warhead. There is some occasional stuttering with some games, and for example in Dirt3 I had to lower the detail to avoid this being a killer, but with tweaking all are playable so far at 1080p. As a casual gamer exploring some older titles the best thing is the value, games from a couple of years ago still look and play great and are available for less than 10 or 20USD. Mybenchmarks as below: 3dMark06= 5226 Re5 = 66(for comparison with the integrated gpu this scores 20!) 3dMarkVantagegpu = 6318 DMC4 s4= 67
  7. Yeah I do like the look and would happily have it on a desk if I had one. Egpu temperatures seem fine by the way so the enclosure hasn't caused this to heat up much more. Before I put my egpu together I upgraded the CPU from a T6500 to a T9600 using artic silver (my first post in the main egpu thread outlines my system). Stupidly I didn't measure temperatures before the upgrade, just know it was hot! After upgrade measured temps are around 60 to 90. As it was my first go at replacing a CPU I'm now wondering whether I applied too much paste and got some where I shouldn't have so may give it another go. Although the laptop was a bit of a pain to take apart I'm sure I could do it quicker the second time...!
  8. As it happens I got my enclosure a few days ago so thought I'd share a photo. My egpu lives in a cupboard but wanted a bit of protection after my 18month old pulled it out on about the second day. Despite being mostly push fit it does feel quite sturdy and holds the card fairly well. Was a little confused at first as didn't realise you need to take off the bottom part of the EXP GDC 6. It was also a bit too tight against the metal on the side with monitor connections so I had to file out the opening a bit - but not too much as the interference is how it holds the card. I'm in China so cost me about 70RMB delivered two days later so pretty happy with it overall. As an aside I also bought the little laptop 'stand' you can just about see in the second photo from the same seller, as it's an old laptop and runs fairly hot (especially in a cupboard!) I thought it may help to raise the back a bit. Actually this seemed to make it worse and my computer cut out when running a 3dmark6 benchmark using this which it hadn't previously. So guess it prefers being flat! Cheers
  9. Hi, firstly just wanted to say thanks for all the great info on this thread! I have just completed my egpu setup so thought I would share, actually couldn't have been much easier. Background is I bought a new ultrabook (Asus Taichi) around 6months ago so my old laptop is hooked up to the TV for home theatre and occasional games. My old laptop is a Samsung R620: Windows 8.1 64bit, Core2duo T6500 (upgraded to T9600), PM45 chipset, 3Gb ram, Integrated 512mb Mobility Radeon HD3300, Expresscard slot Probably over 4 years old now, I considered replacing but like the idea of making something last longer so started looking at upgrades. First I put in a 1Tb toshiba hybrid HD (for about £45), more storage and also a good performance boost. Second I upgraded the cpu to a T9600 (for about £25). Then I started to look into an egpu… obviously not aiming for anything high end but I figured I should be able to go way beyond the laptops integrated graphics pretty easily and cheaply. After quite a bit of time trying to figure out a PE4L/H and ATX PSU arrangement, which was coming in a bit more expensive/complicated than I would have liked, I came across the EXP GDC 6.0. As I’m currently living in China this came with power supply, adapter, and power cable for £30! For the graphics I went with an EVGA GTX550ti 2Gb GDDR5, for about £45. I had read that 2Gb may be helpful on pci bandwith limited arrangements. In terms of setup I booted up with everything connected and windows found it as a display adapter but showed a driver error in device manager. I right clicked upgrade driver and let it try automatically and it had no problem downloading and installing the right drivers, then showing up in device manager as a GTX550ti. A quick reboot, with TV hooked up to the egpu via hdmi, and the display was straight up! As I said, way easier than I was expecting! Not yet had chance to try many games to see how it really performs… A few further notes: Initial reaction is the performance easily goes beyond what it was before but also beyond my i5 ultrabook with intel HD4000. This is perfect as it means I don’t have to load up games on the limited ultrabook SSD and also avoids the hassle of connecting this to the TV. I initially thought there was some conflict as the laptop LCD backlight was on but with no image, I think what was actually happening is it was trying to display to both screens but the 1080p resolution was too high for the laptop to show. If choosing just internal or just external display then everything switches over with no problem. The EXP GDC power supply arrangement is great. Firstly up to 220W from a power brick (albeit a big one). Secondly it only powers up when express card connection is detected, so it auto powers on and off with the computer. I tried for interest only but removing and then reattaching the expresscard with windows up and running doesn’t seem to work, doesn’t re-detect it. I wouldn’t have been able to do a x2 arrangement as my expresscard is slot 3 and my ethernet slot 4 (wifi slot 1 was the only accessible port). Cheers
