  1. Hey thanks for the reply. I was looking at this: Dell Alienware M15x 19.5V 12.3A 240W Slim AC Power Adapter Supply Cord/Charger | eBay does that look right? Just plug that bad boy in and my M15x will be able to draw 240W into itself? Jahnsinn said the PSU has nothing to do with my 7970m not being able to function at 100%. Do you disagree with that? I'm not going to buy the 240W adapter if he is right. No point. I would however like to figure out what the problem is. Thanks.
  2. Hey I think I figured out why my gpu is not running at what its supposed to be running at. I have the 150W ac adapter that came with the M15x when i bought it from dell. I think I need the 240W ac adapter? Will that be enough even for overclocking? I have i7 940xm. I also have this usb charged fan I got from NCIX that connects to my Alienware M15x. Dell Alienware M15x 19.5V 12.3A 240W Slim AC Power Adapter Supply Cord/Charger | eBay Does that look right? Also do I need to change any parts inside my m15x for the 240W? Or I can just buy that adapter and my computer can use the 240W? I was cruising Google and I saw your name in other forums saying something about M15x can only draw up to 180W???? Thanks for all your help, I know your probably annoyed.
  3. Okay I got everything working, even the fans. Not sure if I should keep posting on this thread, but I bench marked with 3DMark06 and got this: AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-940 Processor,Alienware score: 14176 3DMarks I looked at other people's scores and they seem to have it higher. Did I do something wrong? What should I do to make it better? I am not an expert, but I am pretty sure the bigger the number, the better. I still can't even play Starcraft at all ultra settings, let alone on extreme settings...
  4. Okay I got it installed, running it right now. I got to install the latest driver now. Also the fan of my M15x is going at full blast ever since I turned it on after I installed the 7970m. Is that temporarily? If not, how do I fix it? It is very very loud. I ran GPU-Z to try and check my gpu temperature but it doesn't tell me anymore. Thanks.
  5. Ok thanks, I am also wondering how do I take off the link washers that are locking the 4 screws on the heat sink that goes with the nvidia 460m so I can replace them with the new 4 screws I was provided that goes with the 7970m? What tools do I use? Do I put the washers onto the new screws after?
  6. Sorry please disregard my above post. It seems that the bracket is already attached to the back of the 7970m as shown here in the picture I took or so I am told: Image codes: SDC10890 Is it okay to just ground myself by planting my feet on the ground when I touch the graphics card? I don't have an anti-static wrist band and all that stuff. Should I be constantly touching metal to discharge myself or something too?
  7. Man, today I tried to put in the card. I got all the way to applying the thermal paste to the 7970m when I found out that upgradeyourlaptop: AMD Radeon HD7970M (WimbledonXT) MXM 3.0b 2GB GDDR5 - Upgrade Kit for Alienware | eBay DID NOT GIVE ME THE X-BRACKETS! They gave me the damn 6 screws, the CD, the graphic card, thermal paste, and even the thermal pads but they FORGOT THE DAMN BRACKETS. I emailed them but I doubt their going to send me the bracket without a whole ton of fuss. Where can I get the specific x bracket for the M15x with 7970m? I tried a random computer shop but they don't have it. I live in Canada. Thanks.
  8. Hi the 7970m arrived a couple days ago and I will install it either tomorrow or Monday. I am wondering what is the best drive for the 7970m (that is compatible with the M15x) out there, official/unofficial? In the first post you listed one, is that the newest and best? Thanks.
  9. I decided to look at this: AMD Radeon HD7970M (WimbledonXT) MXM 3.0b 2GB GDDR5 - Upgrade Kit for Alienware | eBay instead from upgradelaptop, msged him and he said: "2/ we ship HD7970M card complete with proper X-bracket and matching screws, so you don't use Dell screws" Am I asking the right questions? Can I have your email svl7 because I want to forward you something if thats okay. I see you online but I still can't message you so I gotta post here.
  10. I have emailed mxm upgrade at info AT mxm-upgrade.com but they have not yet replied. Did I get the email right? I got it from their website.
  11. It seems that upgrademonkey has taken the link that I previously provided in my first post off. Anyways I have emailed mxm and given them your quotes. I am not sure what a back plate is along with a million other things but I will listen to all your instructions. I hope mxm accepts paypal cause I don't have a credit card. Slv7, are you okay with me emailing you/private msging you for further detailed explanations for this noob? I feel embarrassed having to post all my noob questions here. ONE MORE POST TO GOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
  12. Where is this mxm upgrade on ebay? I typed that in and got upgrademonkey for results mxm upgrade | eBay are they the same??? What is CF cable? And when svl7 said, "No, the screws are missing, you can't use the Clevo backplate with the Dell screws... if you decide to order from them, ask the for screws as well...." how does he know that their going to provide a Clevo backplate when they said 2/ X-bracket (GPU Supporter) with set of matching screws??????? Two more posts to go!
  13. Okay I was looking at this: AMD Radeon HD7970M (WimbledonXT) MXM 3.0b 2GB GDDR5 - Upgrade Kit for Alienware | eBay from upgrademonkey on ebay. Is that the one I need? It says it comes with: This is upgrade kit for Alienware M15x, M17x and M18x notebooks consisting of: 1/ HD7970M MXM 3.0b card with correct VBIOS for Alienware models. 2/ X-bracket (GPU Supporter) with set of matching screws. 3) Tube of Thermal Paste (Diamond 7). 4) Extra Thermal Pads for your existing VGA heasink. *** there is no VGA Heatsink provided *** CF cable is EXTRA So that is all the hardware I need right? Is there a cheaper seller? Upgrademonkey had said something about disabling dynamic switch with flash VBios. What is that??? I have the Nvidia 460m installed right now with CPU I7 940xm. I previously had the Nvidia 240m and I5 540m. It seems to be that replacing the 460m with the 7970m is much harder than replacing the 240m with the 460m so yeah... All the other parts in my m15x except RAM, CPU, and GPU are original from Dell and have not been replaced. I got a whole lot more questions to ask but I'll ask a little at a time. Three more posts to go.
  14. Hi how do I private message you? Do you use msn messenger or anything? I am very noob with computers so I was wondering if i can private msg/msn you for more detailed instructions on how to install the 7970m to the m15x? I have not purchased the 7970m yet because I have a lot of questions. Btw I tried to friend you to see if I can then private msg you.
