http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/06/bad-news-rich-people-you-wont-be-able-to-use-your-gtx-1080-in-4-way-sli/ How long until 2-way SLI is gone altogether?

Remind me again guys. Are all the current Alienware laptop offerings BGA only with the ugly thing they call 'Graphic Amplifier'? How did that turn out anyway considering a full blown 980 is now powering Clevo laptops?

I skipped the entire DM range just for news like this. Set aside 4.5 grand already for the next P7xx to succeed my Batman
  4. How do I make the P750ZM recognise the nvme drive in PciE x4 slot please? Plugged in the 950 Pro today but could not see it anywhere in BIOS. All SATA slots are showing blank even though the drive is plugged in (I'm certain it is the right slot). I'm using the latest PremaMod, all default settings right after flashing. Just plan to install fresh Windows. Thank you.
  5. Please excuse me for creating a new thread but I just got more confused after scouring threads after threads. So I did smth stupid. Going in without proper research I know :'( but please help. So finally I decided to upgrade to 980m from my current 880m on the Alienware 17 R1 (aka R5 if you like) with 120Hz 3D screen after months of contemplating. After seeing successful attempts I jumped on board and popped the card in (bought from Hidevolution). Before installing the card I used Driver sweeper to clean all drivers. BIOS is latest A14 unmodified and in UEFI mode, everything else on default. And now the machine won't POST. I counted 4 beeps and the screen is black. Lights and fans are on. Putting the 880m back in, same result. Now I'm too chicken to strip down the machine to get to the CMOS battery based on the Owner's manual steps. Last night though I got to the point of removing the palm rest to get the last 2 RAM sticks out. Please help if you can. Specs are in sigs. Thanks

After seeing successful attempts I jumped on board and popped the card in (bought from Hidevolution). Before installing the card I used Driver sweeper to clean all drivers. 7. I really really doubt it was the GPU. Very likely it was the faulty driver that nVidia released OR the game is just buggy as hell. Yesterday I rolled back the driver, then re-update via nVidia Experience and was able to play for 10 hours straight . Today just started the game from desktop and BOOM, shut down completely, not even a loading screen, not even intro! It's baffling .
  8. Need some expert help on this case please. It ruins a good game for me My specs are in the sigs below. The 880M is running svl7's modded vBIOS but I just flashed and forgot and never modified anything. Installed latest drivers from nVidia (344.75 WHQL). Settings in DA:I are under automatic. Installed Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 also. Now I have this abominable HARD SHUT DOWN in DA:I at this particular cutscene during the game *SPOILER ALERT" (the part where you wake up for the first time in The Threat Remains, you go in to see Cassandra, Leliana and the Chanchellor arguing) . After the conversation there's a loading screen and boom, PC shuts down . Now I'm aware of the DirectX error but by some miracles I managed to get rid of the CTD error, but instead I got into something worse . I'm pretty sure my laptop isn't overheating or anything since there's a Cooler Master X3 running full speed underneath. Neither PSU was the culprit since I've been able to crank up to the max and played for hours some very demanding games without a single hiccup
  9. Last I checked he only had an M15x, and the man is serving military service in Switzerland. Might be a while though. Let's see what Alienware's next move is. Cause I'm hoping they would just skip Broadwell and give us a Skylake machine with 980M
  10. Still that dreadful Intel iGPU is present . Seriously though has anyone tried 3D Vision on an 980M non-Alienware machine? The official nVIDIA site for 980M doesn't even list 3D Vision 2 as a feature . I'm only after 120Hz, no need for 3D to be honest. Headaches all too soon.
  11. Optimus (by nVidia, AMD equivalence is Enduro) activates the integrated (Intel) graphic card when the laptop runs on battery mode. It's one of the main selling points that manufacturers of ultrabooks and business laptops vigorously promote. But like I said, it's pointless on a gaming rig, considering how bulky and power-hungry the beast is. On a 3D 120Hz Alienware the Intel integrated graphic chip is hardware-disabled by default and it runs solely on dGPU due to hardware restriction (at the moment iGPU only supports up to 60Hz refresh rate, whether that will change is entirely up to Intel).
  12. And Alienware just signs the death warrant to MXM upgrade to all 'previous gen' laptops. Another excuse to move on to on-board/soldered graphic cards.
  13. Optimus is pointless on a gaming rig. Who the hell play games/benchmark on iGPU anyway? Just pray that my 3D AW17 is gonna work with 980M. Forget 3D, once you go 120Hz you don't go back. On a side note. What do you guys think about the so-called 'Alienware Graphics Amplifier'? Death warrant to MXM no?
  14. May I ask what the maker and model of that nice cooling pad is? Cheers
  15. Just an update. Got my MSI 880M bought from eBay work like a charm in the Alienware 17 now. Flashed with svl7 VBIOS. And it's better than ever. If no OC then gaming is smooth like water
  16. Lol sorry I meant HOW MUCH thermal paste should be applied that's all. Cause the guide on TI advised using a tiny amount, whilst the factory practically smothered the GPU in their paste. With an unshackled card thanks to your mod I gotta be aware of the temperature
  17. Gotta ask again please guys. Obviously with an upgrade I will have to repaste everything, the heatsink and the card. Now when I opened the 780M on my AW17 the copper plate was COVERED in CAKED grease like thin creme brulee (the copper was barely visible at all) and the GPU die was in a similar state (except the black square ring surrounding it). Took a while to clean everything off. Now with my new 880M and svl7 VBIOS should I do the same as the factory setup or just the standard 'grain of rice' glob right in the middle of the die? I have some AC MX-3 left from the good ol' PS3 YLOD day, will that make the cut? Thanks a lot
  18. If you have a 3D screen then you better read this: Alienware 17 with 120Hz 3D Display Has No Integrated Graphics or Optimus... | geek of technology I had this 'problem' until I found out there wasn't any Intel onboard graphics to switch to in the beginning
  19. You have the option to permanently set the Refresh Rate at 120Hz at all times in the Nvidia Control Panel last time I check, at least with the latest driver anyway.
  20. There are plenty of Dell 780M in the market right now and their prices are still going quite high considering all the throttle problems with 880M. I would suggest go find one and flash it with svl7 VBIOS instead of jamming a Clevo card into a Dell machine mate
  21. Make sure you select the correct BIOS version for your system. The error message looks like a mismatch between the flash and the hardware.
  22. I have the new Alienware 17. Reckon the same method could be applied on the GPU since a repaste results in 2-3 degrees lower temperature during gaming. Just a couple of questions though: 1/ When I opened up the heatsink/GPU there was a noticeable amount of factory-applied thermal paste both on the heatsink AND the die, which is MUCH MORE than a grain of rice and the entire copper surface touching the die was completely in grey grease. Only by using isopropyl alchohol was I able to actually SEE the copper. 2/ I have Artic Cooling MX-3 from couple of years back. Is it still good for repasting in terms of performance? Thanks a lot.
  23. Ordered an MSI 880M from upgrademonkey for my AW 17. Will flash svl7 VBIOS the moment I put it in the laptop. Will report back on performance. From what I've read so far from the 780M if gaming is only my concern it should be all good
  24. Wow finally 880M. I'm new to this so pardon the noob question. Will the modified vBios require 'modified' cooling and power supply as well? I have an Alienware 17 with everything stock and no overclocking. Thanks.
  25. Go to Dell Support website, enter your service tag and download the most recent BIOS revision (A10 as of now) and flash your machine man. It's a well-known BIOS problem.
