1. I was using Kext Wizard! Is there a reason why I should copy the kext files to the desktop and edit it there? After editing copy them back and after that run Kext Wizard?
2. Aiiiiiii… this is madness. After some mixed reboots into Windows / OSX the eGPU isn't working in OSX. Trying the Nvidia driver magic with the kext files…, but doesn't help. I don't get it.
3. Uff… difficult question. The one you linked can only provide 60W which might not be enough, maybe a Phobya 90W will be better: Phobya External PSU 230V to 4Pin Molex 90W [PH-84011] - $29.00 : PC Case Gear But even if you want to keep it small… the molex riser force you to take apart the AKiTiO case.
4. That will not work! You would need a sth like a PCIe Y-riser that can be plugged into one GPU and two systems. I don't think that sth like this even exists.
5. I tried the boot hold up and plugging in the TB cable, what didn't work. All the other options are not going to an option for as I want to keep everything inside the Cooler Master case. Bottom line is: external screen has to be main display in the extended display setup. Screwing up the internal screen can be fixed by: - setting the mode back to extended display - reinstall Intel Grapcis Driver - reinstall Nvidia Grapcis Driver
6. Another german shop for the Sonnet III-D: Sonnet Echo Express III - Systembus-Erweiterung Got my AKiTiO here: format.de-Artikelinformation: AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Box My AKiTiO setup costs are: - AKiTiO 238€ - be quiet! PSU 58€ - 2x riser 25€ - Apple TB 2m cable 39€ - Cooler Master Elite 130 case 46€ ------- total: 406€
7. Thx @Tech Inferno Fan will test that later! Right now I would recommend to use the external screen as main display. This (rule) will prevent this problem.
8. Ok… I've done some more testing. OS: Windows 8.1 (64bit) Reinstalled windows as described in post #1. Installed the lastest Nvidia Driver (v344.16) and the latest Intel Graphics Driver (v15.36.7.64.3960)! Optimus is working by: 100% if external screen is main display Optimus fails by: 100% (after a reboot) if internal screen is setup as primary display and external screen as extended display. The following situations are (not) working: - booting with external display, internal and external display are working - external screen as main screen - window mode "Ungine Valley" can be dragged between both screens, always powered by the GTX 970 - booting without external display, internal display is working - Optimus is working - hot plug (plug and play) of the external display works on the fly in windows - unplugging the external display works, internal display still works and windows is not crashing - internal screen as main screen works, but fails after a reboot! - external display as 2nd display works - reboot without external display -> internal display is switched off (Optimus fails!) - plugging in the external display while internal display is black works, external screen is now main screen, internal screen is still off (Optimus fails!) - changing setting to extend the display to both screens doesn't work, internal screen is still off (Optimus fails!) - shut down, unplugging TB, plgging in TB, booting, internal screen is still off (Optimus fails!), previously setup extended display is off - device manager: Intel Iris is not found (turned off?) - setting up to extend the screen between both displays (external is main display)! - the previous step is compulsory! Without it, the next step will have NO effect - reinstalling Intel Graphics Driver works, reboot is showing internal display again - internal screen as main screen - reboot without external display -> internal display is switched off (Optimus fails!) - device manager: Intel Iris is not found (turned off again!)
9. Will do a Windows 8.1 reinstalation now. Should work after that.
10. Please post it. Every single peace of knowledge will help so many other people. Even if they don't say it
11. eGPU performance can't be directly transfered to the internal display. Had to start Valley in windowed mode to drag that window onto the internal screen. Performance drops (of course) onto 83,5%.
12. Yes, I didn't leave the Valley app, just restarted the benchmark as soon it was finished. But because I was always in the app, the 3D load was even between the benchmarks. Valley + youtube in Safari is working. I get a "Safari crashed" warning, but Safari & YT are still working. I am using two riser. Ordered first a flexible molex powered riser, but its capacitors are blocking the card from beeing installed into my CoolerMaster Elite 130 case. So I ordered a solid riser board which is just reorientating the PCIe slot by 90°. So the setup is GTX970 - 90°riser board - flexible riser (powered with molex) - AKiTiO
13. Ok, can do that. But I was running Valley for more than 30min straight in Windows 8.1 today without any problems. But can do that as well in OSX today. Edit: stable in OSX 10.10 since 30min Valley in a loop. Edit2: stable since 1h
14. Can confirm that my eGPU setup with AKiTiO and GTX 970 is working in OSX 10.10 Yosemite.
15. Haha, yeah. But I read that the OSX driver is giving better performance. Just wanted to try Lesson learned.
16. So, clean instal and @Mark guide: BUT: After changing to the OSX Default Graphics Driver, the eGPU setup is spoiled again… Can't fix it with reinstalling the WebDriver, kext editing, fixing and shutdown+boot. eGPU isn't recognized anymore
17. I installed 10.10 on an external HDD for testing and followed all the steps from @Mark. After modifying the kext files and the repair with Kext Wizard (repair permissions and reload cache), the shut down and first with the eGPU conncted I get a KP (happend to me in my first try as well). Can only boot without the eGPU. Booted without the eGPU, pluged it in in OSX, installed the WebDriver, modified the kext, repaired everything, shut down, boot up… et voilà GTX 970 is recognized. Still strange that it didn't work on my main instalation…
18. No, was just testing it under Windows 8.1 as it is a new GTX 970. Didn't tried that with Mavericks. Was hoping to get it working with Yosemite. No idea why the NVDAStartup isn't loading? Can I somehow recreate the validation of the kext?
19. Really? I only read that the GTX 970 is working. Damn… that is a pity.
20. Did all the steps (was a bit confused about the <key></key>CFBundleIdentifier part), but my GTX 970 is not recognized. The Nvidia Web Driver instalation worked, but the card itself isn't listed in OSX… Any thoughts? Edit: The card is recognized somehow… but not as a GTX 970: Also seems like the NVDAStartup isn't loading:
21. Well what you need is a "all in one" solution. So you are stuck to sth like the Sonnet III-D (slimest solution) or sth DIY. I am still working on putting a GTX 970, ATX PSU and the AKiTiO board into a CoolerMaster Elite 130. That case is pretty nice to carry around. There are even nicer cases like a Lian Li PC-TU200A with a handle on top. Edit: To go even slimmer you might need to build a case by yourself.
22. Well I had it working but somehow it stoped working. Had to send the card back to the webshop, as it had too loud coil noise. Replacment card arrived today after 2 weeks waiting. Will be able to do further testing on monday night.
