Paperclip trick: Source: Power Supplies This needs to be done to start a PSU without a regular PC mainboard. I am using the Elite 130 because I don't see much sense in using the AKiTiO itself. It is way much too small to host my big GPU and my PSU! So with the Elite 130 I can build everything into a cheap case without cables or PCBs visible/exposed on my desk. It's also a safety issue. No, the power button of the case is not working. The power button is just giving a temporally connection to the PSU and is mainly used by the circut boards/mainboards. I will use the PSU on/off switch at the back or a multiple socket powerplug with a switch. Will do a guide in detail, when my EVGA GTX 970 and the MBPr 15" arrives.

US$189 AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Box (16Gbps-TB2)

Still… you need to carry around a PSU (ATX or SFX) and connect all the cables all the time. The paperclip trick is necessary to start the PSU in the first place, but I used the lazy version: Caseking.de » Netzteile » Netzteil-Zubehör » Bitspower 20 PIN ATX - Überbrückungsstecker -
US$189 AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Box (16Gbps-TB2)

Imho the best portable solution is of course the Sonnet III-D. But you can go for a Cooler Master Elite 130, Lian Li PC-TU200 or Silverstone SST-FT03B/Silverstone SST-FT03B-Mini. A DC Barrel Plug should be used to bypass the AKiTiO PSU limitations and to use only one PSU. By using two PSUs there is a risk of electricty "flowing" between these two PSUs, which might damage the hardware. -
No! In this forum we came to the conclusion that the AKiTiOs limit is 25W. So by using 80W, it is running beyond the specifications -> not good! I thought, that a 6+8-Pin power connector on the GPU might provide enough power so that the GPU doesn't need more than the 25W, but I was wrong. Bottomline is that I would advice everybody who wants to work with a AKiTiO to get a molex powered PCIe riser card to overcome the 25W. Additional benefit is, that the AKiTiO doesn't need it's own PSU and can be directly powered by the riser.

@328115208: A 970 is indeed better than a 780! If there would be enough space, so we talk NOT about the Elite 130 case, you can run a GTX 970 with the AKiTiO. But I wouldn't recommend that. As you can read one the first page of this thread I also tested the power used by the setup. Without the riser the GTX 970 can take up to 80W through the AKiTiO and that is far beyond it's specs. So even that my MSI GTX 970 has a 6+8-Pin power connector, which could provide 225W (75W+150W), it needs a big part from the PCIe Bus directly.

US$189 AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Box (16Gbps-TB2)

A GTX 970 will be much faster! A 760 is in general a rebranded 670. I assume a performane boost of at least 50% over the 760! This is the riser I bought (in germany): [PCIE] 16x - 16x PCI-Express POWERED Riser Flex I had it working but some trouble later. Will do further testing when my EVGA GTX 970 arrives. I would recommend you to get a EVGA as well, because most people have the best eGPU results with that brand. My MSI GTX 970 was working in OSX 10.10 but was quite bitchy later. The AKiTiO cable is just 0.5m which is very short and a Apple TB cable will "guarantee" a more flawless setup. I'm very pleased with the Apple 2.0m black TB cable. -
Here is a very interessting review about the PCIe bandwidth scaling with a GTX 980. You can see how some games can even improve from x16 2.0 to x16 3.0 (BF4) and some don't care all the way "down" to x4 2.0 (Tomb Raider). GeForce GTX 980 PCI-Express Scaling - Performance Summary I think that is what most eGPU Thunderbolt 2 users can confirm / expect while using a 15" MBPr with i7.

Most GTX 970 and 980 can turn off the fans under low load. -

Can you please describe it more in detail? Which GTX 980? 6/8-Pin connectors? Powered riser? -
Don't worry. Most cards can use up to 225W or more. My MSI GTX 970 was just using 80% of max available power. The only limit was the clock speed you choose and your card can use in a stable way.

@entzoe: So how is it working for you with the EVGA? OSX, Win 8.1? Can you hear a coil noise from the GPU? Also consider to grab a free GTX 970 backplate from EVGA: EVGA - Articles - EVGA's Got Your Back! -
Wow, thanks. Will do that.

Wow, awesome research. Will try that as soon as my replacement graphics card arrives.

$300 Alienware Graphics Amplifier [Discussion]
Dschijn replied to mnrc's topic in Enclosures and Adapters
Seems very powerful. If they manage to get PCIe x16 across their cable… wow. But gaming on the laptop screen should be only possible with Nvidia GPUs, right? No Optimus like feature with AMD cards I think. -

Alienware is making it's own eGPU setup available for preorder. Looks cool, but again they created kind of their own PCIe based plug and cable for that: Alienware 13 Review: The First Futureproof Gaming Laptop -
A cooling fan under the Laptop is not giving you a big improvement. Just lifting the laptop and giving it some "air" underneath it helps a lot!

Thx! I think I will take a EVGA GTX 970 FTW, since I own a EVGA GTX 670 FTW which is working like a charm in my Hackintosh. Additionally EVGA released a new bios for the 970 cards with a enabled 0dB mode and quieter operation. Pity that the MSI card is so annoying, because it's cooler is amazing!

As I am using an extra case (Cooler Master Elite 130) to put all the parts inside, I don't need a small card. Haven't there been people recommending EVGA cards, as they seem to work better?
-
As my 2nd MSI GTX 970 has a very loud coil noise I will replace this one again. My supplier offered my to replace with a different brand. Is EVGA better as a eGPU card?

Did you follow this 3 steps? You want to recommend that I plug my GPU into the Slot everytime I boot? Or what do you want to tell me? Which method worked? My method did not work? Your post is a bit confusing for me, sorry.
