iMac 5K + Echo Express III-D + GTX980 ti
Dschijn replied to arana05's topic in Apple eGPU discussion
Hi, 1. That depends on the GPU you choose. Best GPU for that case would be reference cards, because they will exhaust the hot air and do not draw as much power as all the OC cards. A 980 should work, a 980Ti maybe... But other users managed to make a 780Ti work with the III-D PSU. 2. Sure, just not with eGPU performance (e.g. gaming) 3. Rendering apps that can select the GPU in the options menu work. E.g. Octane render 4. If you can use the performance, yes. 5. Just the script But you would have to modify the PSU to be able to connect some additional cable for powering the GPU: -

125 Watt Power Supply for Akitio Thunder2
Dschijn replied to wmjnottriell's topic in Apple eGPU discussion
Yes, to have a boot screen you would have to use a GPU that is flashed with a Mac BIOS. But the isn't worth the hassle. -
The future is TB3 for most of them! The manufacturers that are not using TB3 are using their own connector.

Thunderbolt eGPU with Thunderbolt display?
Dschijn replied to elizae's topic in Apple eGPU discussion
@entzoe Are you 100% sure you are talking about Thunderbolt Displays connecting to a "non"-TB-port? Or were it Cinema Displays? AFAIK TB-displays can't be connected to anything else than a TB-port! -
125 Watt Power Supply for Akitio Thunder2
Dschijn replied to wmjnottriell's topic in Apple eGPU discussion
No need to worry about the wattage. The system will provide as much as needed. Most important is a stable 12V rail and enough amps for loads. But that PSU is well suited for your setup. Using the HDMI of the MacMini results in the Optimus mode, which will perform slower than connecting the monitor directly to the eGPUs I/O. -

2013 rMBP 15 + GTX 970 + Win10 + AKiTio (problem)
Dschijn replied to iils's topic in Apple eGPU discussion
Using two PSUs at the same time is really bad. You might get ground loops and bring the AKiTiO PSU over it's limits. The Gigabyte G1 Gaming is the worst thing you can do to your AKiTiO PSU, because the G1 draws A LOT of power through the PCIe slot, which is currently fed by the underpowered AKiTiO PSU. You must use a barrel plug mod or a powered riser (riser have the risk to cause problems) to power the AKiTiO and the PCIe slot. -
125 Watt Power Supply for Akitio Thunder2

1. You will only need 2 cables of the Molex plug, 12V and ground. But please try and get 2x Molex plugs and combine them. Here is the pinout: (source: http://wiki.robotz.com/images/4/48/Four_Pin_Molex_Connector01.png) 2. 12V has to be on the inside of the barrel plug and ground on the outside. Measure which cable is having contact to the inner/outer part of the plug itself 3. You need to apply the paperclip trick to make the PSU start: -
AFAIK there are no real USB 3.0 eGPUs. Only some monitor adapters that use the CPU for rendering the image for that screen and compressing the image for USB.

You will still need to make an adapter for that. I wouldn't trust such an unknown brand. Please get sth reliable or you buy a PSU for the 3rd time. -

there are some powerful 12V PSUs, but if you want to keep it "passive cooled" they biggest one is the Dell DA-2 with 220W. If you want to use that, you will have to make an adapter. -

Now turn around the AKiTiO PSU and look closely at the output data. I just hope you didn't fry your hardware with the ASUS PSU... -

The wires should be soldered and not just twisted together. Riser cables are often the cause of instability. -
