  1. I've lurked this thread for awhile and am trying to understand - does modifying the BIOS require a backup & reinstall of Windows 8.1 or is it just recommended? I've seen some report that the update has required them to reinstall the OS, but are there some who've been able to just update the BIOS, reboot, and keep going? Thanks!
  2. Sorry that this does not help you, but I am glad you posted this because before trying modified firmware, I did wonder if it would wipe out my Windows 8 key on the BIOS. Seems like that will be the case. What I have now done, which may help someone else, is to download the tool RWEverything from rweverything.com. If you load it up, press the ACPI button and then select the MSDM tab, at the bottom of the block of info will be your Windows 8 key. Maybe others already knew this, but it might help someone.
  3. Two part question, and sorry if this is an obvious one: - Have any of you been able to locate a Blu Ray / Ultrabay drive for the Lenovo y510p? I am aware that this will require a 9.5 mm drive (right?) and that I should expect to have to remove the bezel from my current drive and put it on a replacement drive, if I can find one. About the only one I have found is the Panasonic UJ162, which can be purchased on Amazon Marketplace or eBay, but I haven't found it directly from a well-known vendor. - If I can find one, will it be more or less plug & play? Due to the whitelist issues with wireless, I'm now leery of being able to just plug in what I want to the laptop. Thank you!
  4. I will be quite interested to know if this works out. Curious, though: Did they actually confirm that these are available to order? When I spoke to a product manager on the phone, he looked up every dual band FRU in the manual and found that none of them were actually available for order. Like you, I'd prefer an alternative that doesn't require voiding my warranty, but this avenue has been fruitless for all. Good luck!
  5. I know you asked some time ago, but... I escalated this very issue through corporate channels and have confirmed that none of the Dual Band cards that are listed in the manual actually exist (or at least are not commercially available.) Over the phone, I had the person I was working with (not just some goober at the other end of an 800 number) check every single FRU. None of them listed are available. So, quite misleading on Lenovo's part, and in conclusion, no "warranty acceptable" way to replace the wifi card with something that supports 5GHz.
