  1. I am not sure if u r referring to external to the LT or external to the integrated graphics. The LT CPU talks directly to the graphics chip via its bus interface on the motherboard. There is no standard (yet) for that interface so all add-on graphic cards r specific to the LT. If the mfg sells an add-on card and it is the one u have, it is a matter of installing it into the LT. If u r talking external to the LT, it is not possible.
  2. it is definitely a preference thing. glossy looks better if u can keep from looking at yourself in the reflection and do not intend to use it outdoors or in other bright lighting. I have 1 LT that is glossy and I immediately put a matte protector on it as with 2 tablets. Fortunately, they r available and work well so I don't worry about it any more but must factor the extra $20. into the cost. I get the least matte Photodon version. I think it is like 25% (maybe less). Perfect for me.
  3. When I was in the market for a new LT I researched Clevo and all others and decided that the Clevo was a solid, value product - it was also superior in performance and features to all others - except the ones that were rebadged Clevos like Sager and Asus, etc. Alienware was good and had a few features Clevo did not have but mostly in the windows dressing area and not performance. As for Dell support - it appears to have gotten better recently. As for refurb units, I have purchased 2 HPs and an LG monitor. ALL 3 have had problems that were not caught on the new unit or the re certification. If u r not technical enough to completely test the unit when u get it, AND be able to convey the problem to TS, I would caution against refurb on complex items. One HP LT's problem was VERY obscure - fortunately the problem finally killed the BT function and they replaced the motherboard - both problem were fixed. Warranty on refurb is typically 90 days so the clock is ticking on testing it fully. I would assume the analysis still holds
  4. I have been using Macrium Reflect free and I love it. U create the image file on the USB drive, then make a bootable CD or USB stick which will access the file and clone a drive in the system. OR u can directly clone the drive. I have had no issues with losing the Windows activation.
  5. I don't game but I have had graphic issues of studdering and lockups that was caused by hardware acceleration in Firefox. I assume that function in other programs may also cause problems. Something to check.
  6. My 11" I carry in a sleeve type case, as it is used for day trips mostly and battery life is 10 hrs so I only need my mouse. My 15" has a full soft case with pockets for charger, scanner, mouse, and various cables. A "test" drop on a corner from 2-3' produced no damage. Well, it was an unplanned "test". A hard case is a matter of preference, but IMHO they r breakable/bendable and not as "flexible" - carry wise or storage wise.
  7. A closed thread on batteries indicated that not fully charging a LI battery increases the battery life. I never read that before. I am aware that for long term storage LI batteries should only be left at about 50% not 100%. I wrote an "instructable" about rejuvenating LI laptop batteries by resetting the controller CPU in the battery. Save $$$, Get A Like New Laptop (or other) Lithium Battery Pack For FREE! I have done this to a number of batteries and milked more life, though for some batteries the effort may not be worth the reward. My question: is the actual mechanism causing the shorter life a chemical thing when fully charging the battery or a controller thing (that is mitigated with a reset)?
