First off I'd like to clarify what you're trying to achieve- Are you wanting to add a singular 8gb stick to get to 16gb? If so you're out of luck. Your current config is 2X4gb, so replacing one would just get you a mismatched 12gb. I agree with the recommendation of Crucial memory. Their memory and SSDs have worked extremely well for me in the various systems that I've put them into. Samsung is also a reputable brand, but if you can go with Crucial I'd do it.

I do not believe it is normal for it to be crashing. After running crysis 3 on high settings at 1920*1080 for about an hour my 510p gets hot, but it hasn't gotten hot enough to trigger safeties or just crash outright. I'd advise that you look into getting a replacement and/or update all your GPU/CPU related drivers.

Do you hear or see anything that could be an error code? A similar thing happened to me with a HP laptop, but it was able to give me an error code through a blinking light on the keyboard.

I'd just like to say thank you to all of the people who supported the development of this mod, it'll help me a lot with gaming performance and 5ghz capability! I'll post my results with the mod in a bit, once I get a chance to install it.
