  1. Awesome, looking forward to it. I haven't been on this board for long but thanks for using your knowledge to help us get the most out of our systems - I'll need it for Titanfall
  2. Very interested in this as I think this is key to making my fans stop running incessantly after I play a game. Has anyone actually tried using thermal pads on it? Size? Brand and results? I'm going to go out and buy some tomorrow and will post my results, any experience would be appreciated - looking at this right now: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/23144/thr-233/Alphacool_Double-Sided_Thermal_Adhesive_Pad_-_15mm_x_15mm_x_05mm_12097.html
  3. Hi everyone, I've been looking at tons of threads and getting mixed results when trying to find the correct way to force flash the bios. Some say to rename the file I want to flash to M14R2.hdr where others say to name it M14R2.fd and then I found a recovery thread that says to name it PALB0x64.fd here's that thread: http://forum.techinferno.com/alienware-m14x-aw-14/1330-bios-reset-recovery-possible.html so that makes me think it must depend on the type of bios I'm trying to force flash. Basically the problem is I was on bios A08 stock and tried to go to a08 unlocked (by force flashing) from this thread: http://forum.techinferno.com/alienware-m14x-aw-14/1426-%5Btested-working%5D-m14x-%2Aunlocked%2A-bios-a07-a08.html got the beeps, it rebooted and it just stayed on a black screen. Now it will only turn on and just sit there. I've tried pulling CMOS battery and letting sit there and get the same results so I'm trying to figure out how to get this back to working condition. Could use some help if you have ideas
  4. Trying to flash the unlocked a08 from the exe, getting a "warning: file size does not match" message and then it closes. Any ideas? I'd rather not force flash if I don't have to. thanks. I've confirmed my current bios is A08 Edit* I have a version R2 - this bios will not work on that model correct?
  5. I tried downgrading my bios to ao8, same thing. Tomorrow I'm going to put some Arctic Silver 5 paste on my cpu and graphics gpu and see if that helps, I'll update when I see the results. In the meantime I've found a great workaround with this program here : Unofficial AW fan control - Alienware User Support it lets you set the temperature thresholds for when the fans come on. I've found that I can tone my fan speeds down to 1500 rpm and it's almost completely silent but at the same time keeps my temperatures hovering below 55. You can set all the thresholds so once it reaches 55 it will automatically go to whatever RPMS you want it to in order to cool it back down. Definitely worth the download
  6. You'd need to run benchmarks to compare the two systems to see that they're not in the same league. The toshiba may be just what you need, but for higher end games it probably wouldn't float it.
  7. I had the same thing happen to me, I think it should be a sticky on this board to not force flash the bios from A08 or A09 down to A03. I had to get my motherboard replaced because of this, the same thing happened...heard the beeps, then sat there, had to unplug the battery and got nothing..no power etc. Good luck
  8. Hi everyone, I just had the MB replaced on my mx14 R2 and now the fan seems to be always running at about med speed. Before it couldn't even be heard when browsing the internet and doing low load type of stuff. the MB came with A13 on it, my previous had A08 so I downgraded to that, same thing. I've reset my bios settings to default, same thing. Is the CPU integrated on this? If not I'm thinking the putty may not have been applied correctly or something but I'm open to ideas. thanks
  9. Does anyone know if I can downgrade my bios from a13 to a08? Ever since I updated to A13 my fan runs a lot more and it's LOUD. I really need to make sure because when I tried to force flash from a08 to a03 it bricked my last motherboard. *edit - I went ahead and did this and it worked, didn't have to force flash it or anything just ran straight from the .exe no problems.
  10. I've updated my bios to A13 in order to prepare to install this unlock...did you guys notice your fan running more after updating? It used to sit silent when I was surfing the web and now it's on all the time, it's annoying enough to want to go back to a08
  11. There's a thread here http://forum.techinferno.com/alienware-m14x-aw-14/2061-%5Bm14x-r2%5D-unlocked-bios-versions.html where people were overclocking this sytem a long time ago, might be better to ask there since they've had time to test it. But you can download afterburner which will show your temps and the general rule is that as long as your temps don't go too high then you're not doing damage to your system.
  12. I know this is an old thread but I wanted to give a heads up. I had had bios version A09 on my MX14R2 and tried to force flash it to a stock Dell bios A03 by downloading the A03 version from the Dell website, putting to a fat 32 formatted USB and then renaming it to m14R2.hdr. I plugged it in (left USB port) and held the end key then plugged in the AC adapter, got beeps for about 2-3 minutes then it sat on a black screen for over twenty minutes (I let it sit because I didn't want to shut it down). I knew it was toast when it was sitting there, I couldn't shut it of by holding the power button I had to open it up and unplug the battery and afterwards received no power whatsoever to the system, nothing. I got a motherboard replacement and that resolved the issue - not fun. I wouldn't recommend anyone trying to downgrade to an A03 from A09 because I'm pretty sure I did it just right and it failed.
