svl7, thanks for the BIOS mods. I have successfully updated my y580 v8.00 original to v8.00 modded with no issues at all. Your instructions are very clear and easy to follow. Seems like those with bricking issues didn't read the instructions properly. Also - Windows 8 SecureBoot continued to work fine after the update to the modded BIOS.

Most likely yes, I haven't tried it myself but in general the generic Intel drivers are compatible with most CPU/board implementations.

With regards to the CPU, I usually go with the 'K' versions, even if I never overclock, because they don't cost much more yet have much better resale value when you upgrade in the future.

I've never had a good experience with Sony's support department, but other than that they are good systems, if a bit overpriced.

How about re-considering Windows 8 with an app to add back the start menu and boot to desktop tweaks? I like Startisback but Start8 is also good. Future driver support is most likely to be better with Windows 8 going forward, so less headaches in the long run.

It's not a big concern to have secure boot disabled, especially with Linux, because malware and other nasties are far less prevalent.
