  1. It should be possible, but the connector is tricky to reproduce, it doesn't look like anything standard (just had a look on my Y500, I assume they're the same). If you can find a cheap device which uses the same connection (there's a seperate sata connector, so an optical drive won't work) you could use that connector and extend the leads. I'm not sure if a longer cable will lead to problems with interference but that's something all eGPU setups have to deal with.
  2. I'm an ECE student and I have some experience with embedded programming, so far only AVR/MSP430/ARM platforms. I found this forum looking for a Y500 bios mod and I'll be honest I'm purely posting here because of the five post requirement, to which my first reaction was to load up a disassembler and have a look at the unmodded v2.02 bios. Turns out I probably won't make my own mod in one evening. My programming experience is mostly C with a little C++ and the occasional glance at assembly output. What would be a good way to learn more about bios modding? Learning x86 asm has been on my to-do list for a while, I'm guessing that would probably be a good start.
  3. Getting anywhere near USB not to mention HDMI data rates over the air is going to be tricky with current hardware. Streaming works well enough because of compression but raw data transfer is not going to be much faster than a fast wifi connection. WIDI is essentially streaming, and it looks like that's the best option available at the moment.
  4. I'm quite annoyed with lenovo for making me mod my bios just to swap a wifi card. Going to ask my law-student friend if he can look into EU legislature about locking devices like this. The laptop is effectively disabled after switching what should be a user replaceable peripheral.
