I have Dell desktops that are big white boxes from windows 98. Still running well for running linux and doind light work. Though building your own desktop is the best way. For motherboards I like MSI. Corsair cases. Seasonic power supplies. EVGA video cards. I'll use anything thats availible to me. -
The Toshiba S70-AST3GX1 Laptop has a Core I7 4700-MQ and 2 GB GT 740m Graphics for $1020 The Samsung ATIV Book 6 has an I7 3635QM and Radeon HD 8770M Graphics for $1200 The HP ENVY 15-j059nr Quad Edition Notebook PC has a Core I7 4700-MQ and 2 GB GT 740m Graphics for $1080 Thats pretty much all you can get in that price range. If you want better Graphics Card, than you'd have to wait for a deal or spend a bit more money.

What is the best bang/buck laptop brand?

Asus and Lenovo have good laptops that have a decent graphics card and aren't priced too high. I purchased the Lenovo y410p myself for $820 from the Lenovo site and it's pretty decent at gaming. I usually buy laptops from the manufatures themselves or Amazon. Dell also has some good laptops but the price is a little higher. Acer's V series is the best budget values for I7's and GT 740m graphics.
