  1. Your 6850 gpu score is in the ball park for your core clock rate, you can see it in the following search results: https://www.google.coom/search?q=6850+3dm11+&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&gws_rd=cr&ei=KXS0UuSaOoSUhQfJsIGwAg#q=6850+3dm11+6850%281x%29&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&safe=off I'm currently waiting for a decent cooling for 290 or an alternative to pop up, and it gives me a chance to study . Right now 770 is priced at the same price I sold my 7970, and a 290(non X) is 100$ higher but a reference design. A 780 (none TI) is 150$ higher. Its anyone guess how much a 290 non-reference will cost.
  2. Oh now I wish I tried that grass scene before I sold my GPU :/ But can't you test that scene on a desktop at 1x 2x... etc? Or a PCI 1x - 1x riser and just test it on your PC
  3. I had a deal to upgrade my now newly expensive 7970 (Litecoin mining jumped the price) to a 290 for 100$, but I don't see anyone who got it to work yet (Only one tried tho). My 7970 gives me around 9500 graphics score at 3dmark11 at stock and that's about the same scores I see with a desktop PCI 3.0 16x (example: AMD Radeon HD 7970 video card benchmark result - Intel Core i5-2500K Processor,ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 and that's with 30% OC, AMD Radeon HD 7970 video card benchmark result - Intel Core i5-2550K Processor,ASRock P67 Extreme4 Gen3 with a 10% OC), which is awesome, would you think I can expect the same from a R9 290? Edit: Ok someone just bought it from me at 400$, want to get a 290 soon.
  4. I think he talked about his laptop dGPU not eGPU, And you said to him once that a iGPU isn't routed to internal LCD on his m15x, so I guess he has to get a new gpu as I5 540m's gpu won't work to replace it.
  5. What do you mean by not working? Does it get past/to BIOS? Safe mode? Or just a black screen.
  6. What do you mean by load? Power it on? Connect it? Or run a 3d program? I'm not sure if a working compaction while the gpu is off is a good idea unless its hot-swappable and windows knows to allocate the new found card in the correct space (I tried it with mine and it didn't work). Have you tried DSDT substitution? (Link: http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/2109-diy-egpu-experiences-%5Bversion-2-0%5D-28.html#post31421)
  7. A full PCI-E 16x socket with a lock, 1x is loose. Detachable hdmi type cable, preferably standard so its easily replaceable - I would rather disconnect the cable then keep inserting/removing express card. (Edit: I see its mentioned and is mHDMI, Awesome!). That it will detect better when the computer is soft reset, power on, etc and activate the delay. (Not sure if possible, doesn't currently work...) Maybe a variable pci reset timer like with potentiometer or a rotter switch. Power connector (floppy) not in the front of the slot, I'd rather have a different type, more secure connector and a molex -> power adapter. Edit: It seems PM3N is exactly how I want it
  8. Nice ! I've also since then got a 2630QM, and here is its result at 1100/1500: AMD Radeon HD 7970 video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor,Hewlett-Packard 162B . I sold my i5 2520m at 70$ so the upgrade was just ~60$ shipped, now I wished I had gone higher to 2740QM / 2820QM like yours (look at the physics score compared to mine) with a another 30$.
  9. Hey, your image isn't working for me so I can't see which errors you get. This is what I followed to fix the errors you probably are getting: DIY eGPU experiences - Page 1003 Do you have the address from the dsdt substitution guide? You can post me the dsdt file you created and I can modify it the proper way then send it to you to compile. I'm not sure if you can use mine and if its at the same address, but I don't think it will cause harm as its only temporary till the next restart, So here is mine(I don't have the source with me). to try with my address, if you have a different address change it I'm not sure mine will work on yours: Zippyshare.com - dsdt.zip Now lets say you have the dsdt.aml file (yours or mine) do the following: Put the file at <diyegpuimg_drive>\config\dsdt.aml And modify the <diyegpuimg_drive>\config\startup.bat file to the following: call vidwait 30 call pt MEM writefromfile 1 0xBCFD1000 dsdt call chainload mbr Start the pc and egpu at about the same time, go to menu based setup 1.x and choose startup.bat -> test. This will cause it to run the 1st and 2nd command (because its just a test it won't chainload), so now the override is in place. Now you test the different compactions that you couldn't before, for example mine works with 56BIT only on eGPU while choosing to ignore iGPU and force none to 32bit. If the compaction worked, you will get all_alloc = yes and you proceed to chainload -> test (Change from mbr first if necessary). Now setup 1.x managed to compact the ram it will add the command: call pci to the startup.bat file, so if you still get errors in windows after chainloading (43,12), or can't boot and want to try a different compaction, you will need to edit the startup file again, or else it will compact twice (when you run startup.bat to write dsdt again). You can edit it in setup 1.x you don't have to do it in windows... </diyegpuimg_drive></diyegpuimg_drive>
  10. Sorry I'm not an expert like nando, so if he has a different answer I'll follow up him, but in the meanwhile may I suggest you try a MBR + DSDT Override and see if 56Bit+ compaction works? I And when you said it failed, did setup 1.x not found solutions (it searches for possible configurations) for compaction or it did it not boot or something else? I know its a pain reinstalling, but If the card isn't showing in UFI, but is in MBR, MBR could be more favorable to you. I think nando managed to get a AMD card on both with a 13" mac air: http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/3062-%5Bguide%5D-2012-13-mbp-gtx660ti-hd7870%40x2-2-th05.html
  11. Hello, post us some pictures. Like setup 1.x after entering menu based, and after each compaction. Details on your entire setup will help as well. I'm thinking it might be allocation, and could use a DSDT Override. Show use some pics from windows of the display adapters allocated address as seen in: device manager -> display adapters -> choose your igpu/dgpu/egpu -> properties -> resources -> memory range. Preferably of any compaction you tried. Do some setting not boot? Like compacting everything at 4GB. Edit: I've just seen you said any compaction method fail, how so? are you sure tried all the options in the order showing in the help menu?
  12. I've updated my experience post with BF4 and BF3 videos. Sorry that I couldn't show me actually participating in the match, but one of my hands was being used to hold the camera phone, I didn't have a stand or anybody nearby, so I tried my best
  13. @coyote , @flyhotstuff Take a look at this: Battlefield 4 Benchmarked: Graphics & CPU Performance > Benchmarks: CPU Performance - TechSpot
  14. Some update, I'm using a older driver so my card is voltage locked at 1.119 so I couldn't get any higher, but this shappire dual-x is a really great overclocker, it stays at 54c the whole test at 1200/1550. I probably could push it further if you want me to test it, I'll just have to unlock it. I also ordered a 2630QM and a ssd (not really latest tho), so I could test it then. Here are the latest benchs of 3dmark11 at VDDC 1119 (1.12V): 8268 @ 1000/1425 : AMD Radeon HD 7970 video card benchmark result - Intel Core i5-2540M Processor,Hewlett-Packard 162B 8961 @ 1100/1500 : AMD Radeon HD 7970 video card benchmark result - Intel Core i5-2540M Processor,Hewlett-Packard 162B 8908 @ 1100/1550 : Generic VGA video card benchmark result - Unknown, 9458 @ 1200/1559 : Generic VGA video card benchmark result - Unknown, 3dmark06 : 18891 @ 1200/1550: http://www.3dmark.com/3dm06/17455121 I'd like to stress that this is entire built is from used parts, 2560p at 380$ shipped (60$ international shipping), 7970 at 257$ (we have high taxes here), old 400W from relative unknown company (ezcool) salvaged from a old pc, you can probably buy a equal one at 25$-50$ ordered a 2630QM at 120$ shipped from ebay. Then you get a really kick ass portable machine for around 750$. Considering I sold my old 6870 card which was just unused at my desktop to get this 7970 at 142$, and I'll sell this cpu at around 70$, I would have only spent 500$! At first I wanted to buy a sager W230ST, which would have cost me 1428$ shipped here with a cheapest quad core, which is heavier, has worse batter life & built, and even less resale value (where I live) ,and I got this awesome laptop, which compared to the sager just has a worse screen but its fine for my uses, I use my 23" at home, and I never use the laptop outside. So this is a awesome bargain and I would lik thank this community and especially to Tech Inferno Fan for it. I've got a lot of people here interested in egpus as well. Now I just need to build a enclose and hope this setup stays stable
  15. Hello, I've just got a used HP Elitebook 2560p (Win7,i5 2520m) and a used sapphire dual-x AMD HD7970. I also have setup 1.30 test2b i installed, PEAL 2.1b, and an old 400W psu (24A on 12v rail) without 8pin or 6pin connectors so I use two molex converters. The card gives me error 12 if I don't do compaction or error 43 if I use <= 4GB compaction (32bit options). With 56GB Compaction (36bit) on egpu alone (it asks what to force at 32bit and I choose none) it works! But to use 56GB compaction I have to use a DSDT substitution in setup 1.30test2b as seen i the following commands: call vidwait 20 call pt MEM writefromfile 1 0xBCFD1000 dsdt.aml call pci call chainload mbr pt MEM.... is the command that writes a dsdt override, that address and and creating the file can be found at the dsdt substitution guide. I power the laptop and the egpu at the same time, and PEAL2.1b is set to 6.9s delay, and card type 2E, 4E, 8E, 16E on that other switch. It also plays mp bf3 ultra at 100fps and bf4 utlra with 2x msaa at 70 with hdmi sound. I'm worndering if to post a video? (3dmark06 gives me error). I can try BF3, and soon BF4. EDIT: Added BF4/BF3 videos: The following are with driver 13.11 beta 9.4 (I had a driver problem that I couldn't resolve so I said WTH, went ahead and installed win8 instead of win7 ) BF4 Custom (All ultra but 2x MSAA), Map "Operation <something>" on unparked cores win8.1: BF4 Custom (All ultra but 2x MSAA), Map "Operation <something>" on parked cores win8.1: BF4 Custom (All ultra but 2x MSAA), Map "<something> highway" on unparkedcores win8.1: BF3 Ultra (Operation firestorm) on unparked cores win8.1: BF3 is crashing my pc for some reason, didn't have much time to figure it out yet.. I actually remember having a little better more constant performance on my win7 with one if the drivers I tested (I had like 5 in the mix) but I don't remember the exact one. 16. Hey and thanks for all your work!, It worked once (AMD Radeon HD 7970 video card benchmark result - Intel Core i5-2540M Processor,Hewlett-Packard 162B) after my original post when I reconnected everything and played with the connector, but then I restarted and tried setting gen 2 in BIOS and it stopped working. I'm not sure with the delay modification since I used to set it at 500ms delay, wait to boot selection, and power the card, that usually detected it on the start, I could wait more if that matters. Now I changed it to 6.x seconds and I start it with the laptop, go in setup 1.x, choose menu, it doesn't find the card yet, so I press f5, and again if needed and after a couple of seconds it finds it. I tried without PCI compaction and I get error 12 and non sense reading in GPU-Z. With PCI Compations I get error 43, good bios with some weird clock readings: (not working, not working, working) The card is lying and the connector seems to be a bit loose, my 4850 didn't work till I stood it up, but the 7970 is too heavy for it to stand up without the back falling a bit. The first time it worked was also after it stopped detecting at all and I played with the EC2C part of it. 1) Does the PE4L use only the first part of the PCI connector or also the cut part which sometimes is in a bit of a angle? 2) If its the EC2C end what can I do? 3) Can you unplug the hdmi cable on the express card? If not, is it durable to keep pluging/unpluging the express port everyday after I get this working? if not is there a express card extender to relief the stress? 4) It doesn't usually doesn't detect the card when I set gen 2 in bios, or SW2 to 1E. So should I keep using SW2 on 1E? or try 2x,4x...? What does that do? Thanks ahead, Paul.
  17. Hello, I've just got a second hand 2560p and a 7970. I had a 4850 which was recognized in my win 7 and gave me a error 12. I didn't try it with setup 1.x because I wasn't sure if I would get a Nvidia or a AMD card. But I guess it means that PEAL 2.1b is working. Now I've got a used HD7970 and setup 1.30 test2b. The card is recognized in win7 and egpu setup but give me error 43, fans seem to run slow (probably standby/idle). My 400W psu (24A 12V rail) didn't have a 8 pin nor a 6 pin connector, so I'm using two molex converters Default booting mbr2 gives me a [mbr2] HD2->HD1 something and then some [uEFI] error, booting mbr/bootloader brings me to startup selection menu again where I choose win7. Does it matter what I choose if I eventually load win7? I tried latest amd driver 13.9 and 13.2 beta 5 (which some here used with a HD7970), and setting gen 1 and 2 in BIOS. SW2 is set to 2-3 (non 1x..) since it doesn't detect with 1-2. Any ideas why I get that error? Before compaction and after(with using "all but option", I also tried only igpu and egpu which gave me 64MB): Thanks ahead, Paul.
  18. PSU = Power Supply Unit, or just Power Supply. And you can buy one from any computer store that sells computer hardware (and not just prebuilt PC). You can also probably get one from and older PC, a friend or second hand. You don't need a real powerful one just enough for the gpu alone. People are also using a xbox power block as their power supply, but that will require some soldering skills.
  19. I'm looking to get the nightlight diffuser cap and spring as showing in this pic of different model but is almost the same: Its attached to the front black bezel, is it possible to get those parts without the bezel? Thanks.
  20. Hey, Just got a 2560p off ebay, and PE4L 2.1b, I also have a 400W psu (24A on 12v rail) and a xbox power block. Now I'm searching for a second hand GPU, I don't plan on playing on the laptop screen so its not a consideration. I have the following offers around here (not US): HD7970 at 285$ (Usually 340$) GTX680 at 260$ (Usually 350$+ around here so it may be gone tomorrow) HD7850 at 150$ 560TI at 150$ 660 at 200$ 660TI at 250$ For which cards will I need setup 1.x and is it recommended anyway? There isn't a lot of experiences here with AMD cards, I guess its because of the easiness of optimus instead of virtux to relay the video to the internal screen. But are there any issues with them compared to Nvidia, especially on this laptop? And lastly I'm thinking AMD HD7970, what do you say? Thanks ahead,
