  1. I'd definitely try the firmware update as the next step. If that doesn't correct the behaviour, an RMA to Crucial would be a good next step. Beyond that, If you need a recommendation on a new SSD, I would look into the Crucual m500 series. I bought the m-Sata version for my m14xr2 and have tweaked it to boot in under 10 seconds to a full desktop. Maybe Crucial would even be willing to replace it with a newer m500 and just charge you the difference, if any. Also, thank you for the Rep!
  2. If you follow the steps, it typically doesn't cause data loss. But that being said, I always recommend a backup before updating, as does Crucial in their guide. Rapid Store Manager typically is used whenever you have an intel chipset, and works in AHCI, RAID, and IDE modes. It sets tuning options in the registry and monitors smart status on drives. I believe it also sets TRIM options, but I could be wrong. That brings up another good point, ensure that trim is enabled on your computer! Open an administrative command prompt and type in: fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify Please post the result of this. If it shows a 0, trim is enabled. If it shows a 1, trim is disabled. I would agree with the fact that updated firmware seems to make the drive work better, as the speed in mixed mode and full speed mode were both addressed according to Crucial.
  3. Your bios is the latest version, which is a good starting point. First, ensure you have the latest firmware for your SSD. According to Crucial's site this is Version 25 (released 2/20/2013). This updated fixed full disk performance and mixed mode performance. This could account for speed issues. Crucial.com Product Downloads - Firmware Updates and choose the "Crucial v4 2.5-inch SSD" option under the drop down box. Second, you can optionally disable the page file, as you aren't reading OS files from a traditional disk. This will eliminate a lot of read/write operations to the SSD, extending the lifetime, and freeing up read/write operations for other things. I typically run all my bench marks, disable it and reboot, the re-run benchmarks to ensure I didn't take a performance hit. Third, I believe that the Alienware system you have uses an Intel based SATA chipset, so rapid storage manager is worthwhile, as it sets appropriate registry flags to tune for SSD's. There are some guides to doing this manually as well. I'll try to dig them up! EDIT: If you'd like, you can PM me the output of HWiNFO which will show me much, much, more about your configuration. It is available for download here: http://www.hwinfo.com/download.php I wouldn't post it publicly, however, as it may contain sensitive information such as your public IP address.
  4. If you're just looking to hardwire on that side of the house, why not add a non-managed gigabit switch? If you are not against spending some money, you can get whole house coverage with a few strategically placed wireless access points. I recently installed 3x Engenius wireless access points on a property that was about 5 acres, with a house that is 3 stories plus a basement. The whole house, bottom to top, has wireless coverage as well as the back yard near the pool/garage. I think in total the hardware was about $600-700. We did go a bit overboard with an outside certified wireless access point that is on the flag pole near the garage, but that was what the customer wanted. You could get away with one or two access points for less than $300-400. Chmod1337 is correct about the transmit power. Typically you start to affect your signal quality when you boost the TX power and suffer lost frames/dropped connections. The TX power and antenna gain should match the antenna design.
  5. When I first added an SSD to my desktop build, I had the same issue. I ended up fixing it with a Firmware Flash, Intel Rapid Storage Monitor update, and by ensuring AHCI or Raid was enabled in the bios. If you post your build info, with SSD firmware revision and bios revision, that would help!
  6. I find it funny how most people eat up these "updates" to product lines. Intel and Nvidia know what they're doing, updating their systems in a "tick tock" fashion. Intel 2xxx series + Nvidia 5xx series upgraded to Intel 3xxx series (tock) + Nvidia 6xx series (tick) then upgraded to Intel 4xxx (tick) + Nvidia 7xx series (tock). It would be much more groundbreaking if they released their /huge/ updates to chipsets at the same time to provide the largest speed increases.
  7. Have there been any stability issues in the A13 revision? I have the updated A13, but not unlocked yet. I figured I'd ask before I go to the trouble of flashing it.
  8. I've been deploying HP EliteBooks for the better part of 2 years, and I have to admit that they are extremely well built, and meet or exceed your requirements.
  9. Photoshop will run on integrated graphics for the most part, but 3DSMax is a bit different. I'd look at getting at least an nvidia gt640/740, but more likely you should get 650/750+. My $0.02 is to look at getting a matte display if you plan to work outside in photoshop, or if you don't want ambient lighting to skew your results when you go to print.
  10. Prohibition worked so well for alcohol... and we wonder why a large majority of arrests are drug related? Tax revenue > arrests.
