  1. This is not going to cool well. The fan in the middle if going to have little effect on the temps of a Y580. You need a bigger fan like NotePal X3 if you want 1 fan.
  2. I am even going to see what the speed boost does for my gfx card. Might leave it on if it is significant.
  3. I am not sure what clean install you are referring to. However I did use the backup tool I found to make a .bin backup. I assumed since the fparts list was used later, that it was just part of the package for the fit.zip, not necessary in the backup phase. Then I did the fix, which had no issues. I placed prr, fpt, fixed bios and part list onto the usb drive, and had a slight problem getting it to boot. I forgot to put it in legacy mode. After that, I ran the per and voila, installed without problem. Booted up, checked the bios, and svl7's mod is working fine. Put my new wlan card in, downloaded the drivers, and now I no longer have to disconnect and reconnect to my wlan when coming out of sleep. I will test the performance over a few hours of gaming to see if the card does the same thing as the last one(losing network every 1 1/2 hours). As soon as I get home today, svl7 gets a case of beer.
  4. OK, so I tried to run the backup, it just flashes a command prompt then goes away. Did it do anything?? I am running it as administrator and I have my anti-virus off. I downloaded a bios backup tool, which saves it as a .rom. I can tell it to save as a .bin. But if I use this tool and not the one I downloaded here, will it properly flash?? Or is that fparts list in the folder important to this process?
  5. I use the NotePal U3, which gives targeted cooling with the three fans. I noticed a significant difference in my temps. I used speed fan to check. The NotePal U3 keeps my gfx card under 75 C all the time, even with long run times in games.
  6. I have a refurbished Y580, running Windows 8.1. All to often while I am gaming, I will inadvertently hit my Win Key. This of course shoots me to the start screen, and I get killed in my game. I looked using the forum search, and did not find any info about this. I know with outside keyboards, you can often disable the key. Or some people will take them off. Well I don't want to remove a key. So my alternative is to program the system to disable it when I don't need it. Does anyone have an idea of how to reliably do this in Win 8.1? I tried some regedit suggestions from another forum, but they proved to be futile.
  7. I have a Y580. I have the same issue as you. I don't want to brick my laptop. Are you saying that even under warranty, they are charging shipping to send you one of these two wlan? I used to work for Apple, and so I know we had shipping too. I was a senior advisor however, and could opt to not charge for shipping, especially on in warranty replacements. But $10 for see you next week shipping or $16 for tomorrow shipping?
  8. I certainly felt bored by the expansion. Mainly because it was a such a rough grind even on Hard mode. My monk takes forever to kill elites right now. And the drops are still quite weak. I think I made 5 levels and then I went back to SWTOR. But then SWCrack is always my main go to.
  9. I never considered this option when I bought the Intel 7260 wlan card last week. Of course I didn't also know there was a whitelist. I will try this tomorrow. If I don't get a desired result, I will follow the bios mod guide for the Y580. I did get one refurbished, but I still have warranty until October.
  10. I use the Notepal U3 with my Y580. I can put the 3 fans in the right spots for the 3 opening on the underside, and with a rolled up towel, I can have it n my lap elevated slightly. Works really well for me, as this chair I am in is also where I play my games from.
  11. I believe this was stated on page 1 of this thread... I am currently running 5DCN89WW(8.0). If wanted to remove the stupid whitelist in order to use Intel 7260HMW in my Y580. The Centrino wlan card it came with seems to go on the fritz about 2 hours into playing games. So I got one I thought would work. Nope, whitelist crap. So if I get the modified BIOS described above, will I be able to install it? I like that this will do away with the whitelist. But is there some way for me to opt out of the speed increase on the video card? It gets hot enough with the NotePal U3 I am using to direct air into the vcard intake. I would enjoy not having to worry about prematurely burning the vcard out. Does anyone know with the bios unlocked if I will be able to set the vcard back to default. Or is that taken care of in Windows under the nVidia Experience utility? AH!! God sorry there was not meant to be so many posts. I thought I had some bad posts. Pease clear my other two posts below. If my Y580 is running 5DCN89WW, does this mod work for me? I really hate the centrino wlan card I have. After about 2 hours of gaming, it kicks me off the network. And I know it is the card cause no other computers or devices get kicked at the same time. I like that this will do away with the whitelist.
