Ok, thanks for all the help. I decided I need the 780M and I'm gonna try to change the MB/CPU with a 1762 that apparently works fine with the 780M. It looks as if it's gonna be cheaper than a new whitebook with a 780M and I think it's also less wasteful as I can't think of a use for the old parts.

I'm still torn between ordering a 780M and trying it out or a confirmed 770M. I could really use the 780M as I don't use it for gaming and my viz stuff really makes everything crawl. Plus, used for GPU rendering in octane for ex. it makes quite a difference. Could maybe the 780M need more power? A bigger power brick would do the trick? Would I need to change the battery too? Or should I forget the 780M option completely?

Any luck with the ordered 770m? I'm in the same boat with a 1761 whitebook bought in germany and really wanted the 780m but the 770 would work nicely too, if only we had a confirmation that it works...
