I bought the Sager NP3775 or Clevo P377SM-A already primed with gxt980m. But I was having a problem with the brightness adjustment in any version of Windows.

My problem with this laptop now is finding to buy the heatsink for VGA 2.

Oh! GTX 980m!!! I totally misunderstood! I thought you were talking about the GTX 980 mod where you swap the GTX 980m core with a GTX 980 core.

This is in case you have the same problem and the same equipment. We have a Motherboard P377SM-A or Sager NP377, with Video Card gtx980m. So I don't know what can happen if it's in another situation. I just found these instructions in another topic on this same site.

The instructions refer to creating a key in Regedit for Nvidea so that the brightness adjustment function works again. The guidance provided by @Prema to @i_pk_pjers_i are as follows:

    1) Press Win+R

    2) In Run: Type Regedit and Press Enter

    3) Open regedit and go to the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e968-e325.../0000" key. Click on "0000" on the right side, a list of keys, commands and directions will appear.

3 Alternative) Find the sub-key corresponding to the NVIDIA graphics adapter. I did this by going to Find in the Edit menu and searching for "nvidia". A list of keys, commands and directions will appear with an Nvidea key checked, probably in the same folder. Can be run with Crtl+F, put Nvidia and confirm.

    4) Add a new DWORD called "EnableBrightnessControl" and set the value to 1. For this you click with the second mouse button on an empty space. An option will appear "New > Dword Value (32bits)" and name this key as "EnableBrightnessControl". Once that's done, you double-click to open the key and in "Value Data:" You put "1", without quotes. And confirms.

    5) Reboot and the brightness keys should work again."

Just to let you know: In the case of i_pk_pjers_i, everything seems to be working perfectly again. In my case, the fn+F8/F9 functions for brightness adjustment stopped working. But the brightness adjustment bar is working correctly. And one caveat, it is enabled for the adjustment to reach 0, be careful not to lose the screen image and not be able to readjust.

I'm not an expert if something doesn't go as expected. But in this case there is always the possibility of Formatting Windows, in case of any problem.

Oh I was talking about the core swap what temps you used, what tools and what techniques to solder and desolder.

I had the same problem, in the same situation.

I managed to solve it with the link above.

All that remains is to resolve the issue of the fn+F8/F9 functions for the brightness intensity.

Sorry to interrupt you two, but can you share your core swap process. I am going to attempt it myself and would gladly hear some "do and don'ts" and get some good advice.

    Hey all !

So i'd like to re-use my old Rx17 R4 however the GPU is busted therefore windows keeps crashing... I'd like to force disable the 7970M HD so that computer only sees the intel integrated graphic which works fine.

However my BIOS version is on A.12 which it seems there is no modded version of...

Anyone can help me with this ? Would be very grateful.

I've provided my bios backup if it helps : https://www.sendspace.com/file/7j622v

    Thanks !

Just remove the amd graphics, then it automatically switches to integrated gpu

Sorry it took so long to reply. I figured it out. For me, it was this brand new PSU that I got to go with the upgrade. They said it was OEM and 330w but changing back to my older one solved everything. Maybe this new one is defective or something but I will buy one directly from Dell if I can and see what happens. It's not crashing any more and everything seems to be running well on the old one. Also, my rig is somewhat unusual as everybody else here seems to have Optimus and integrated graphics disabled and using the 120Hz screen but not me. I wish I could figure out why I can't disable integrated graphics and why this new display won't work. I tried again after discovering that this new PSU isn't working correctly and still the same outcome of 8 beeps. Even trying to have an external display connected with the HDMI or DisplayPort to HDMI adapter would still get the beeps after disabling integrated graphics in the BIOS. There are a few other quirks that I'd like to work out but that's the major one. Another one is I think nVidia Control Panel isn't affecting anything. I think disabling Intel graphics and installing the new screen would solve this issue, if I could figure out how. At least I've learned how to modify those driver files and can mod the newest ones to install on my system but the settings don't seem to be taking. Intel Graphics Properties vsync works so I don't know...

It sounds a little like you are mixing some things together.

First of, either you have Nvidia Optimus + 60hz configuration

    Or

    None-optimus + 120hz

    Understanding the configuration:

    60hz uses the lvds connector.

The lvds connector can use pure external graphics and integrated graphics or both at the same time called Nvidia Optimus.

    Bios Settings are called:

    PEG = Pure external graphics

    IGFX = Pure integrated graphics

SG = Both at the same time

    PEG is the best setting.

I would uninstall the Nvidia first, then switch to PEG and install the driver again to make sure I got rid of the Nvidia Optimus configuration.

    Understanding the configuration:

120hz uses the EDP connector, (the one with screws).

It only support pure external graphics.

If the integrated graphics is active in any way and the laptop tries to use it, it will cause 8 beeps.

Also it only support Nvidia graphics, AMD graphics will cause 8 beeps too.

Also before upgrading to 120hz I will uninstall all graphics drivers and make sure the bios is set correctly.

    P.S.

MSI Gtx 1070 only supports EDP and can only run in pure UEFI mode, otherwise is will give 8 beeps. So to avoid a lot of headache, convert your harddrive from MBR to GPT to make it run in UEFI mode, then set BIOS to UEFI, then install windows 10.

If you only have lvds connector (60hz) you need the integrated graphics to convert the signal.

There for you will need to use SG in bios and Nvidia Optimus to run both at the same time.

Sometimes when configuring everything, it is a good Idea to try loading default settings in bios first before changing the settings. It can happen that some settings you made can conflict with each other.

I keep getting BSOD and OSOD and just hard shutdowns. I'm not really sure what's going on and haven't done extensive testing but Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition and Grand Theft Auto V seem to run fine and run good with a little overclocking. But, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Ghost Recon, and Need for Speed games, among others, cause OSOD and hard shutdowns. Anybody have a nice driver they could share that would work well for this M17x-R4. You would think that since we're all using the same laptop that the one driver that works for you will probably work for me. I've tried two different modified drivers. 416 and 441. I've stress tested for hours with FurMark and FireStrike and temps have only gotten as high as 81C. I have a 330w PSU so I don't think that that's the issue. Any guesses?

Even if it seems graphics card related it is possible it could be the network driver or some other driver that is causing the issue.

I can't remember how you find it, but windows error log might give a clue what is going on.

If you find an error where WFP is mentioned, it is the network driver.

    Also try these suggestions:

    https://www.google.dk/amp/s/windowsreport.com/orange-screen-of-death-pc-fix/%3famp?espv=1

Also try using hwinfo64 to set your fans to run at max speed.

Even though it might not be the issue, the vram runs extremely hot! Don't overclock them. Remember how the heatsink is designed, if the core is 81c the the vram is at least 81c too or more.

  7. Also don't expect Nvidia 3D vision to work. I have tried but even though Nvidia 3D stereotypic appears at device manager, there is no settings for 3D vision in Nvidia control panel. No matter what driver I have tried it will nok work.

Also Nvidia has discontinued support for 3D vision so new drivers will probably not even have 3d vision installer at all.

By the way you must run you bios in UEFI mode to get the 120hz screen to work.

    Legacy is not supported.

i still cant download because of the rule here sir henrik... but i have another question is a lcd a 120hz if its a 1920x1080 in resolution? i mean how can i describe a monitor lcd of alienware if it is a 120hz? thanks in advance

    Yes a 120hz is 1920x1080

The way you can find out if you have a 120hz.

If you have AMD graphics card = no

If you have gtx 660m or lower = no

If you use Nvidia Optimus = no

If you have a sticker saying "3D vision" = yes

If you go into Nvidia control panel, desktop resolution, and can set the resolution to 120hz = yes

If you take off the keyboard, then you can see the screen connector, if it has screws on each side, it is 120hz if not it is 60hz.

I will try to flash it again as soon as the new clip I ordered comes and then if it still won't work I guess I will try to replace the chip or de solder it and flash it.

A new motherboard would be pretty expensive.

BTW the EC and bios that I tried were these ones: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6IqcVTk0jpYX1Fvck9FdWIteDg

    Thanks for your help!

I wish you luck. I tried for fun replacing the ec with one from a m18x R1 because it was the same type, but no luck.

Don't know if I should make a new topic or not, but here it goes
So I tried to blindflash and nothing came of it. Then I tried to flash the EC and the bios, but i'm not certain that it was successful,

to try it I started to assemble the laptop and now it doesn't even start. I read somewhere that I if the EC is bad the laptop won't even react to the power button.

Do you think it was that or did I f****d up something else?

It is possible it could be a wrong EC. I tried using a CH341A on R4. I ended up buying a new motherboard, I could not get it to work. It was completely dead.

Hi! so I have a M17x R4 that a friend gave me... And it gives 7 beeps when I turn it on. I wanted to try and flash the bios to see if it would solve the problem. Can I do it with the programmer CH341A I have?

My friend says that the laptop didnt boot after he updated the bios. Maybe it was the wrong bios.

Yes but you need to fiddle alot to make the clip stick to the bios chip.

Have you tried resetting bios by taking out the CMOS battery, draining for power, put everything together, holding the FN key while booting up?

Also there is a way to blindflash a bios, using a flash drive, put in esata port hold the END key while plugin the power cable back.

Just make sure that no matter what DO NOT TURN IT OFF WHEN START BEEPING REALLY LOUD!

Let it sit 1-2 Hours before thinking about shutting it down if nothing seems to be happening.

Thanks for that. Once I pull the trigger I will definitely be looking for some help. I have upgraded a few machines but this one looks to be the most complicated and I have never done a vBios before and I hear it needs to be done with the SLI 980M's.

Yes it does to work properly. It will work without the vbios but the performance will be better with the correct one.
