  1. @mw86 - yup mate, 700 dollars definitely pinch... will be having tortillas and onions for the entire next week to save the money lost but the damage has already been done; the new mobo's arriving on monday.. on the brighter side, might get lesser temps due to a new, factory-pasted GPU
  2. @mw86 - Thanks, and apologies for keeping you up til 1:30 AM solving my twisted case really appreciate it!
  3. Alright, so alienware/dell refuses to help me, so i went ahead and disassembled the whole thing myself... disconnected the coin cell battery for a couple of minutes (didnt remove it from the blue plastic; hope that was the right thing to do..) and then reassembled the whole machine... tried booting up the machine, it would just keeping beeping forever... tried recovery via the steps stated earlier, but the machine goes off when i release the END key... think i have really messed up this time Any thoughts or leads about what i can do next?? any other way anyone knows of?? As a side note, when you say copy the bios version you want to flash to, to the "root" of usb drive, you just mean format the usb drive (FAT/FAT32) and copy the bios file onto it, right?? Really desolate now @mw86 - Thanks for the concern mate! feels good to know am not alone dealing in this problem here.. really think i messed it up bigtime as i tried reflashing the bios 3-4 times, each time it gave me an error...
  4. Messed it up further dang, m bad with tools! Alienware onsite tech coming over (monday or tuesday) just to help with disassembly as i think i have screwed a few things up... @svl7 - Thanks for the help so far! will let you know how it went once am done resetting the CMOS!
  5. I see... Well then, will give it another shot... Guess will refers to Steven's thread on teardown/disassembly of the m14x... Will keep you posted!
  6. @svl7 - Really stuck on how to remove the keyboard-palm rest assembly... Afraid i will damage my m14x. Is resetting the CMOS battery an absolute must??
  7. Thanks a ton for the prompt reply sv7... Really appreciate it! Trying it right now... Hope to catch u in a couple of minutes! Hope i dont screw up the machine trying to take out the CMOS battery...
  8. Hi guys! A little help here please. Am in a bit of a soupcoz i had installed the unlocked A08 bios, made a few changes in the settings and then later tried to flash back to A01. The InsideFlash utility gave an error and m14x has been bricked now... I tried the steps above but then the laptop just keeps "beeping" and immediately turning off til i release the END key. Am I supposed to hold the END key till the laptop restarts? Any idea how long the whole process takes? Thee "beeps" dont really sound like beeps, rather mild "thuds" coming from the laptop... Am I doing something wrong here?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  9. @Stevenxowens792 - No problems! Adding you... My handle is KillCatalyst... I see you favor assault too @mmskate13 - hehe! i feel for you, having to wait til christmas for this gem of a game will add you, but unfortunately i dont play any of those games... see you in action around christmas then!
  10. Hi mmskate13, Did pop my hood yesterday and found things to be clean.... There was also enough movement on the fan to suggest that it was wroking without being blocked... Thanks for the nifty insight though, I will keep an eye out for dust in the future! Lots happened since yesterday.... After another session of gaming (30 mins BF3 MP), the max temp was 90 deg at no OC!! something was definitely wrong, so i contacted AW support right away.... The guy was nice and courteous, and he made me install bios A05 (had A03). Ran a few benchmarks (using unigine Heaven) and all came out to be well... After the call had another session of gaming (30 mins BF3 MP), it gave me max temp of 84 with turbo boost! and, with StevenX's method (disabling turbo using Throttlestop) I got temps of 84 for sessions of 45 mins! Thank you again StevenX! Curious as to how i got lower temps with A05... As i read somewhere, that although it adds more "steps" to the fan, it does result in an increase in temps... On a side note, ninjahunter, stevenX, mmskate13 - can I add you guys to my friends list on Battlelog??
  11. Got that! Will try that and see how it goes... thanks yet again for the process! My bad for not including my system specs on the last message; Here they follow. Sorry for persistently bugging you about this, but hey, being a moderator has its downsides, right?? System specs : Alienware M14x Core i7 2630 GT555M 1.5GB 4 GB RAM Win 7 64 Bit Home Premium 900 p Screen I play BF3 at a mix of high and medium settings (AA deferred off; Anisotropic Filtering at 4x; SSAO; AA Post Medium @ 1366 X 768) and yet, with low OCs (~720/1440/1000) i get temps upto 95 Deg.C (turbo boost on) after an hour of gaming using MSI Afterburner and coretemp (with a targus chillmat!)
  12. I see... That sounds good! Also, can you please guide me as to how to disable network throttling?? And, i really need your opinion on this one, cause it will help me decide whether or not to go in for a CPU repaste.... Do my temps look normal for the kind of OC i am doing?? I know people have done higher OCs while getting lesser temps, but given my situation, would you say the temps I am getting are fine??
  13. Aha! there you are Steve! Really look up to you for advice... Thanks for the reply Few more temps.... Half an hour on BF3 multiplayer... OCed to 680/1360/950... Max temps of 93 deg. c (with turbo boost) !!! Am i doing something seriously wrong?? in my limited knowledge, those are just some crazy numbers! it shouldnt be that high, or am i wrong?? :S Thanx for the advice Steve... will definitely do that and let you know how it went.... One quick question comes to mind though... I had earlier tried disabling turbo boost manually.... seemed to work as i was getting lesser temps.... but one thing that definitely stood out was frequent lag spikes when playing the game.... Using throttlestop, are you experiencing any such thing when you disable turbo boost??? And would you say that the temps i am getting currently with the OCs are normal??? Sorry if i sound like an inquisitive jerk :D
  14. Appreciate your response yet again ninja i thought i wont be getting any cause its lunch time Thanks for making that clear.... 750/1500/1000 does indeed appear to work for most people.... Have you overclocked your system too?? if thats a yes, then what were your temps before and after the repaste?? And given our conversation, am I right in assuming that if i want lower temps i should repaste my system too, although you think my temps are fine??
  15. Thanks for the reply ninja! That makes me feel better, even though my bios is A01 and not A05 Havnt really done anything pertaining to throttle stop... did try disabling turbo-boost and though it did help the temps, there was some frequent in-game lag spike... reversed the turbo boost and it disappeared... I really wonder how people are getting higher overclocks with lower temps?? this might sound pretty noobish, but shouldnt we all be able to get the same OCs with the same temps, given that our m14x's all have the same card and more or less the same configs too??? Would really like to get the views of any of the moderators too on this.... Stevenxowens792, are u there??
