  1. I assume this is a locked version of the BIOS, right? So, we would either need slv7 (or someone else) to work on a fix or live with a locked BIOS if we choose to update...
  2. In regards to Original KH Special Laptop Carbon Skin Cover for Lenovo Y500 Series | eBay from your post...I was wondering if there are any skins for the Y400? I've been looking around and can't really find any. Only ones I can find are for the Y500 which are a different size. If you know a place that has them, please let me know!
  3. Forgot to follow up to this thread for awhile. Since I originally posted, I decided to try Win8 (with StartIsBack, to make it bearable for my needs). Installing Win8 vs. Win7 which I was using when I first posted, I immediately dropped to the same 8-9 sec boot time that others have posted. I also put in Plextor M5M PX-256M5M mSATA as my main Win drive. Using the msata vs. standard ssd didn't provide any noticeable differences, but I never performed any benchmarks to compare. I've since installed 8.1 update and everything seems comparable still.
  4. I think I realized where the difference is coming in. After reading about Win 8 on our comps, it seems that is what allows the really fast boot times. I'm running Win 7 on my SSD. I'm thinking about imaging my smaller SSD to back this one up and then installing a fresh copy of Win 8 to see how that goes. Probably won't until sometime next week, though.
  5. Entirely possible. I would look around and see if I can figure it out. However, I don't have any experience tracking these things down. I tried looking around online and I couldn't really find documentation or details about how to get rolling. If you know where to look (for either the files, documentation, or guides on the subject), let me know!
  6. I fixed the title of the thread, because I already fixed the problem. But the first problem was that this option wasn't available for me (because of driver version). Then it wasn't working. Anyway, see my previous post for a semi-explanation on how it fixed. But fixed nonetheless.
  7. For the people with less than 10s boot times, if applicable, how long did you have the OS installed before running your SSD in your Lenovo? I had mine for about 1 year, so I'm wondering if all the extra installed background apps/processes cause the increase. I haven't tried booting on a completely fresh install. Also curious about timing and making sure we're comparing apples to apples. I timed from the moment I hit the power button. Just making sure that I eliminate unnecessary variables.
  8. Because, 95% of the time, I don't want to use it. But, that 5%....I don't want to take apart the computer everytime that 5% comes to pass.
  9. Your boot times reminded me about my boot time. The boot times I mentioned originally were prior to flashing my BIOS. After the flash, I'm getting around 17-20s boots to the desktop, plus another 7-10s for background services - that's with the GUI boot. I definitely know what you mean by feeling spoiledǃ
  10. Got it! Honestly, I"m not exactly sure what I did. Last night in my tired haze, I tried installing the ELAN drivers then the Synaptic drivers for Windows 7, then I did the same for Windows 8. For whatever reason, when I got the Win 8 Synaptic drivers installed, it seemed to work after restarting. Now I'm just leaving it unchecked. I did notice that for a brief moment during booting, just after the desktop becomes visible that the touchpad is responsive. It quickly stops, however. Thanks for all the help/suggestions, everyone!
  11. Couldn't find any discussion, even questions about, the keyboard backlight and its having no timeout on the Y400/Y500, either here or elsewhere. Maybe this isn't something most people care about. However, on my last laptop (a 3-year old Toshiba) I had a backlight keyboard also which turned off automatically after something like 10-20 seconds, if no keys were being pressed. I really liked it personally. I realize my Y400 has three settings - off, low, high - but I was wondering if anyone knows about setting and/or adjusting a backlight timeout for the keyboard?
  12. I wish it was that easy. I have the icon, no problem. When I bring up the Pointing Device Properties, I don't have an Advanced tab. Still, I looked under all the tabs for anything again and didn't see an option like switching it off for a one session. Under the Device Settings tab, there *is* an option to enable/disable (not specifically for one session, however). I tried disabling it, but it came back on when resuming the computer like before. I also tried clicking the Settings button and dug through all the options there but didn't see anything relating to enabling or disabling. Since you obviously have this...I'm wondering if my driver is not correct somehow. I'll try downloading the ones from Lenovo, uninstalling, reinstalling to see if this fixes and will report back. EDIT: The driver may actually be the problem. I am still downloading but can verify afterwards. The reason I think this is because I've had issues with a couple other drivers, specifically audio and webcam, because I am running Win 7 and used the Win 7 drivers. For whatever reason, the Win 8 drivers *did* work. Found this out a couple months ago when I was first installing the new drivers on my existing SSD.
  13. Thanks! I just gave this a try and compared the pre-overclock/volt benchmark with post in 3DMark11 and it bumped me up ~900 points. 2322 vs. 3286 For what it's worth, I installed the 320.49 Nvidia driver just before doing both tests.
  14. There's a new update that Nvidia is notifying me about, but I haven't installed it. Also, didn't play around with any settings yet, but hope it helpsǃ
  15. Just finished updating/flashing. Actually, I was trying to download the 2.02 modded version when you were updating and it kept failing until I reloaded the page. Anyway, straight forward and no problems whatsoever. I wanted to comment about post-flashing. This took a solid 18 seconds off my boot time to the desktop and about 10 second of the complete load (ie. background servers finished). I didn't modify anything in the BIOS yet, just looked around. Not sure why or if it was supposed to work this way, but I have a definite zip to boot and even running apps within Windows, compared to before. Thanks a lotǃǃǃ
  16. Did you try playing around with the drivers settings in the Advanced tab? Not sure what's all available in those options for the Intel one, but it could be that two different settings are conflicting with each other.
  17. No, didn't look before. I checked and there's no such option in either of the drivers' properties. It gave me an idea to install the actual software (I only had the drivers), for the mouse, which is an MS arc mouse. After installing that (Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center), I didn't find any options other than controlling the button settings, unfortunately. There is this "app-specific settings" option, but that's basically so the mouse buttons perform different actions depending on which application is open. Nothing related to completing an action (such as disabling the trackpad) if the mouse is attached to the computer. A bit of an aside, but all this stuff reminded me that I had this ability with my last Toshiba laptop. There was an option in the BIOS where the trackpad could be disabled upon boot. There was a button near it which, when pressed, enabled it, similar to Fn+F6. I guess that's why I was thinking maybe the BIOS on this one would have something similar.
  18. I generally do hibernate if I don't need it on for a lengthy period of time. The 20 minutes that it takes to walk to school isn't very lengthy, so I generally don't for this trip. Regardless of my methods, hibernate *and* sleep have the same effect, whereby the trackpad is enabled aftering resuming from either. The trackpad isn't the best quality I've every experienced, but it's far from the worst also. I've had problems where it's too sensitive, rather than the opposite like you mentioned. Also, as I mentioned in the extra info at the bottom of the previous post, I actually cannot disable it. There's no option when I right click. When I go into the properties for it, the disable option is greyed out. I would rather not uninstall it completely, because there are a handful of times where I use it or forget to bring my mouse with. One update to my first post is that I checked within the BIOS and definitely couldn't find anything about it there. So, I guess that answers that particular question I had. I'm looking to flash/unlock the BIOS soon, so maybe something will be available in there. I can update after I find out (or if someone already happens to know....).
  19. Most internal HDD's and SSD's do not have an indicator light, as far as I am aware. Just like code_theory suggested. External cases and computers have them, but that's because the wiring is designed to visually indicate when data is being transferred. I'm not sure about the Y500, but the Y400 definitely has four lights the left side of the case. It's right near the SD slot. There's a light for battery, external power cord, HDD light, and one for Caps lock. The HDD light is actually always on, and I've noticed that it turns off (or blinks) when there's activity. So, it's basically inverted from what you may be accustomed to.
  20. Haven't tried the wifi direct stuff, but trying to help with your second question. Have you taken the ultrabay drive out and set it in an external hdd enclosure and then connected to USB? Might be worth trying for a few days. Then try connecting it up to another computer (with the enclosure and/or directly to SATA port) and compare the results. Seems weird that it would take a month for the errors to start if it was simply because the caddy was bad (I would expect it to happen more quickly). Also, have you thought about running any hdd analysis software to check for disk errors and SMART issues? Might be that the hdd slipped through QC and is already going bad...although hopefully not.
  21. Did a quick search and didn't notice anyone here using a solid state drive... So, I was wondering if anyone is. If so, share your experiencesǃ I'm using a Crucial M4 SSD which is 512 GB. The first thing I noticed was a great boot time. I can boot from off to my desktop in 35 seconds and all the background apps are loaded within the 40-45 second mark. Now, I'm sure there are faster...but this is the best experience I've had from anything I've ever owned personally before. I haven't tried shaking my computer to the point of disrupting the hard drive...nor do I plan to do it intentionally. However, I was running a transfer the other day and had to walk to the office with my computer running, lest I have to redo two previous hours of work and then wait again. No problems whatsoever. General speeds in running applications have been either faster compared to my last computer, although, I have no specific benchmarking comparisons there. But here are a couple things that I ran on the current Y400 with CrystalDiskMark and SiSoftware Sandra 2013 SP3. 22. If I missed a thread about this, please let me know. I couldn't find it, though. I prefer not using the trackpad on my Y400 unless I forget to bring my mouse where I go. So, I would like to disable it upon boot, resuming from hibernation, or when waking from sleep. I know that I can manually hit Fn+F6, but I would prefer to do that only if I forget my mouse and need to enable it. So, default = disabled. Another related issue is that even when I have the trackpad disabled (ie. most of the time) and I put the computer to sleep to travel somewhere, it automatically enables the trackpad again upon resuming from standby. I am not sure if the solution to both these issues would be the same or not...but in case not, I thought I would mention it also. So, I guess my question is: do I do this via a bios setting? Or, do I need to follow some other method to do so? Some additional info. Under Device Manager, I cannot disable the Lenovo Pointing Device. There is simply no option for it. And in the properties for it, the Disable option is greyed out.
  23. Thanks for the post! I would be really interested in a Blu-ray drive. Got my Y400 with the basic DVD burner, expecting I could only pay for the Blu-ray rather than a slightly different build which includes other things I didn't need. But after getting it, the only stores I could find that sell it have been questionable, and I didn't want to risk it. I suppose if people start selling on ebay eventually that would work, but I was wondering if you know of any other places for these at the moment?
