  1. Great to see you back finally Nando and keeping the eGPU scene alive, we missed you
  2. Why was my comment removed and who removed it??
  3. ^Is compaction mandatory? Try proceeding without selecting any of the compaction options, which in the past have been very flaky for some reason when it comes to Macbook Pros. Do you still get error 12?
  4. Hey guys, had a specific question about PCI compaction I was hoping somebody could answer? Basically, you can find my setup in my signature. I am currently using Nando's Setup v1.20 and in the new version, v1.30, it would enable PCI compaction for my Macbook Pro. Something which I am currently not able to use. However, with all upgrading it would take a decent amount of my time (1-2 hours to properly update and configure the eGPU Setup software) and risks breaking my current setup which wasn't easy to get running in the first place. What exactly does PCI compaction do, in regards to eGPU setups? Does it just increase performance or? I ask because I am fairly satisfied with my current setup (including performance wise, can play all my games at high settings) so I almost see no need to even update to the latest...
  5. I am getting excellent performance and no issues using the latest Nvidia driver provided via Windows Update, and same goes for the older Intel driver I am using that I also installed via Windows Update (but now can't update). I like because it manages versions for me and comes without all the bloatware Nvidia drivers come with now a days. Why is not important, what is is that I resolve the issue at hand.
  6. Thanks but I don't want to touch the Nvidia drivers because; a) I need them for my eGPU setup 2) They should be independent from each other Having the Nvidia drivers installed shouldn't not be affecting me installing the Intel driver....but maybe they are? Maybe it is a conflict and it is not possible to have both installed?
  7. Hey guys, I am having a weird problem.....I have an Intel 4000HD integrated GPU along with my eGPU setup (see signature). Basically, Windows Update under Windows 7 shows both "Intel WDDM Drivers update" and "Nvidia WDDM Drivers update" under the optional update section. I was using my eGPU at the time but I selected both, both downloaded, the Nvidia one installed fine but then the Intel update failed. I thought OK....Maybe it just needs to be the active GPU? So I restart my laptop with my Nvidia eGPU disconnected and try to install the Intel WDDM Driver update but it is still failing Anyone else had this issue or have troubleshooting suggestions? Is it impossible to install those Intel WDDM driver updates if an eGPU has ever been configured on your machine?
  8. Try changing the Physx setting (from within Nvidia control panel) from autoselect or your CPU to the dGPU specifically.
  9. Hey guys, recently came upon something that I thought I would share for others out there with the same issue.... Basically, I've had my eGPU setup for months and most of the games I play have been working perfectly (DX11, 1080p, 60+ fps). Some of these games include WoW, Bad Company 2, and other fairly recent titles. However, some older games have not worked properly this whole time. Those included CoD2/4/5 in particular. Even on 1600x900, no AA, etc I was struggling to maintain a stable 20+ FPS which confused me because they are less demanding than the other games that ran perfectly fine at max settings. Anyway, I seem to have finally tracked down the problem and it seems to be limited to the Call of Duty games I listed running off an eGPU setup. To investigate this problem, I went into the Nvidia control panel and noticed the Physx configuration was set to auto select, with my Core i5 and 650Ti both visible. I manually set it to the 650Ti and viola! All my CoD games running perfectly maxed out @ 1080p! I figured autoselect was the better option thinking the software would choose which option is better in terms of performance but it seems you will get better performance overall if you manually specify to only use the eGPU for Physx. My $0.02.
  10. Can you please explain how for others?
  11. Just benchmarked my system via 3dmark06 and I'm getting a higher score than my (slightly outdated) gaming desktop; Score of ~16,000.
  12. Hey , got the setup in my signature working however I got a few issues/questions; 1) Should I be using grub4dos MBR, straight up "chainload MBR", bootmgr, or? I am currently using grub4dos MBR and it seems to be working but since it is Windows 7 I thought I should be using bootmgr, no? 2) iGPU + eGPU compaction doesn't seem to be working via your software. It says "no solution found" every time. Compact all PCI lanes doesn't seem to work either and just hangs the computer everytime. If I want better DX9 performance, what option should I choose for compaction? Maybe just the eGPU one? The first one (all except x,y, and z) does work but I am leary of compacting PCI lanes not related to my eGPU....GPU-Z currently displays "x1 2.0". 3) It seems I cannot set my PhysX processer to be my iGPU? It only gives me 2 options, CPU and the GTX650. I heard it is a good idea performance wise to atleast use the iGPU as the PhysX processer (is that true first of all?) so I'd like to be able to do that.... Thanks in advance Nando! 2012 13" Macbook Pro | 8GB Gskill RAM | 124GB Crucial M4 SSD | OS X + Windows 7 (MBR) + Linux GTX650 Ti eGPU | 400w PSU | PE4L v2.1b | Sonnet Pro Adapter | Setup 1.2x
  13. Thanks so much for this guide!!! Worked PERFECT on the below setup after I spent hours trying to get it working myself.... -2012 13" Macbook Pro (not retina, 8GB RAM HD4000) -Nando's non-retina pci.bat -GTX650 Ti + 300w PSU -PE4L v2.1b -Sonnet Pro ExpressCard adapter
  14. $30 for 0.5m so not a big deal....And yes, it seems to actually be expensive/difficult to make because no non-OEM cables exist on ebay for example...
  15. I noticed that but common sense tells me that since this is a thunderbolt adapter, it would surely come with a thunderbolt cable in the box so I can actually connect it when I get the thing.... Wow nope, common sense doesn't apply to Sonnet; "Set up with the adapter is simple—just connect it directly to your computer or at the end of a Thunderbolt device chain with a Thunderbolt cable (not included, sold at the Apple Store)" Will have to purchase a cable seperately just to be able to use their device...
  16. Does anyone know if when you purchase a Sonnet Echo Pro ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter (PCIe 2.0), does it come with the thunderbolt cable to connect to a macbook pro 13" for example?
  17. Awesome, thanks Nando!! And to confirm, THIS is the Sonnet adapter I got, the pro one. Went over your performance chart in this thread and I am actually fine with running at x1.2 with Optimus drivers....Which I am hoping will be possible to get going with my expresscard route. I mostly play older DX9 games anyway so I am OK with the 12.5% performance loss over the direct thunderbolt route (especially given the price difference), although I do like maxing out the settings under DX9 and running them at 1920x1080...While I have your attention, given my setup/equipment, would your DIY eGPU software be of any additional help/convienience for me? Sell me on it because I am still interested haha! Will be interesting to get this all setup and functioning properly....Feel like I have a lot of trial and error work in front of me Total cost =$420 -$150 Asus GTX650 Ti -$30 CoolerMaster 300w PSU -$90 PE4L 2.1b ($70+$20 shipping) -$150 Sonnect Pro Expresscard to Thunderbolt Adapter
  18. Got it. Now, final questions since I just bought the PE4L-EC060A 2.1b and the Sonnet expresscard-to-Thunderbolt adapter.... 1) How does the sonnet expresscard->thunderbolt adapter work under Windows 7 (BIOS)? Any easier/different or is it the same as if I had gone the direct thunderbolt way like the OWC Helios (other than performance)? Do I still have to worry about delay/PERST# issues? 2) Is there any device like the PE4L (expresscard solution) that has built in support for delay/PERST# like the TH05 does? A little late to be asking this but just wondering... 3) Finally, don't I also need to purchase some kind of cable to power the PE4L itself and possibly a x16 to x1 PCI-E adapter too? Something like THIS Also forgot to mention that I don't plan on using the internal display. I will be docking my macbook pro and will be using it with 2 x external monitors if that makes any difference.
  19. I am in the home stretch guys.....Already purchased the GPU (Asus GTX650 Ti, $150) and an external PSU (CoolerMaster 400w, $30) so just looking at something like a TH05 and the PE4L-EC060A 2.1b may very well be that device, BUT; 1) Then I need to purchase the sonnet expresscard->thunderbolt adapter ofcourse and how does that work under Windows 7 (BIOS)? Any easier/different or is it the same as if I had gone the direct thunderbolt way like the OWC Helios? 2) Is there any device like the PE4L (expresscard solution) that has built in support for delay/PERST# like the TH05 does? 3) Finally, don't I also need to purchase some kind of cable to power the PE4L itself and possibly a x16 to x1 PCI-E adapter too? Something like THIS
  20. Thanks for the reply Nando. Are they absolutely necessary to get it working though? I ask because it would be very difficult to implement those things... I can't really splice into the cable because I plan to purchase something like the OWC Mercury Helios and your software sounds amazing but I can't use it if I have to create another bootable MBR partition because I can't (already have 4 primary ones).....Unless I could just use your software off a bootable USB stick every time for example?
  21. Ok guys...I've spent so much time reading everything here that I actually want to take the easiest approach possible and was even thinking about just picking up a Vidock... Anyway, so far the easiest alternative I've figured out so far for my 13" 2012 Macbook Pro is; -OWC Mercury Helios -GTX650 That's it. The GTX650 does have a 1 x6pin connector for power but only uses 64w at full strength and I have already confirmed with OWC that the Helios can deliver 64w just through the PCIe connection. PCIe connection in general can deliver 70-75w so I should be OK in terms of using just the stock AC that comes with the Helios correct? Would this simple setup even work you think guys? Wonder if anyone's tried it or something similar....Also for comparasion, if you were to crunch the numbers between the ViDock (expresscard->thunderbolt) and my alternative route mentioned above, how much bandwidth would each deliver and would Nvidia optimus drivers work/be effective for either method?
  22. Thanks for the informative thread Nando! I've read it all but still have some concerns....Basically, find my setup and build intentions below.... -2012 13" Non-Retna Macbook Pro (Core i5, 8GB DDR3, Crucial M4 128GB SSD) ^Triple booted with reFIT (OSX via EFI, Windows 7 x64 via BIOS, linux x64 via BIOS) -EVGA GTX650 Now this is where you come in as I have several options in my head...Sonnect Echo Express SE or the OWC Mercury Helios, both are around $300 online. Now, my video card only requires 64w MAX apparently and both units are able to provide that with their stock power supply units over the PCI-E connection. So that would be fine correct, even if I don't have anything to plug into the 1 x 6pin connecter my video card has? If that is the case, I could just insert my card into either unit. If it's not the case, I'd have to open up the enclosures and run them bare. I'd also have to get a dedicated PSU that I would only connect to the 1 x 6pin power connector, correct? Aside from that, how would it all work given my triple boot setup? I would only use the eGPU under Windows really but I would like to use 2 monitors with it....Also, would the software you have available for purchase help me out at all in my case? Let me know which option you see best or if you foresee any issues with my setup and thanks in advance!
  23. Apparently the TH04 should be coming out Summer 2013 meaning sometime soon? Anyone have any updates on this??
  24. Ok, I figured as much so thanks for the response. Think I will stick to the GTX460 because in my gaming desktop I use a GTX260 actually and it plays all the games I play at max settings Power efficiency I am not too worried about, will be getting a 400-500w dedicated PSU for the card anyway with at least 80% efficiency rating. Still hoping someone can speak to using a DIY'd eGPU setup under Windows 7 installed via MBR versus installed via EFI though....
