I see there are 3D displays which they claim to be compatible for the M17x R4 on eBay. I'm guessing they'll work. But I also understand the clear plexi panel doesn't easily come off, so there's a risk of breakage. I understand the toy factor, but IMO 3D doesn't really add a lot of value

For the nvidia guys on linux. There is another solution coming up in the 319 series of the proprietary drivers, it's fairly technical to get it set up and you need linux kernel version 3.9(+), Xorg version 1.13(+) and xrandr 1.4(+). So, not really a solution viable in Ubuntu unless you want real breakage with the repositories. But more info at : Chapter*32.*Offloading Graphics Display with RandR 1.4 FYI, I couldn't get it to work with the modesetting driver. Did get it to work with the Intel drivers though... -
I'm using Arch Linux. Got the nVidia GTX 680M. Extremely problematic to get the proprietary driver with optimus working without using a hackish bumblee solution. Got the nvidia graphics sort of working with a "proper" optimus solution by starting the X server, then set the provider output through Intel with xrandr, then setting it back to auto. The official nvidia website suggests using the modesetting driver instead of Intel, but couldn't get that to work.
