  1. Real good thread buddy, good one (had no idea about NGFF!). With switchable graphics enabled, do you mean that it supports Optimus? Y400 should probably use same LVDS screen cable as Y410p, which means 900p screens might soon be available. Can you confirm that the Y400 chassis is same as Y410p, or at least around the screen?
  2. Ended up finding a Lenovo W5xx series 170w adapter for a mere 30USD and decided to simply resolder the power cable on the brick board. Works fine and dandy, cheers guys!
  3. Hi all, I was wondering what PSUs people are running on their SLI systems? Is the official 170W really enough on full load and overclocked? Also, does anybody know what the connector type is called? I was thinking of getting a ~200W brick and using an adaptor to make it fit the Lenovo. Cheerio
  4. I agree with wed_wabbit; why are you choosing to install Win8 in Legacy? You might as well go for Secure Boot and UEFI. UEFI vs Legacy has nothing to do with SSD support; it's purely to do with the boot process. There are several guides on how to optimise Win performance using SSD, and to keep read/write to minimum. They involve fun things like disabling prefetch, superfetch, and a few others. Google is your friend.
  5. The only thing that springs to mind is spin-up, which is only relevant if you're booting from a HDD. I had this problem bonkers ago (around Pentium 4 "era") and it was related to the HDD needing more juice than supplied on start up, so BIOS didn't detect a bootable drive until second boot when HDD had spin up properly. On unlocked BIOS, there's an IDE menu with your IDE/SATA devices. Furthest down on that page you'll see the device list and number. Try changing your HDD's Staggered Spin Up state, and see if that does any difference. Otherwise, I don't know.
  6. The Lenovo energy management does weird things on seemingly a "deeper" level than the normal Windows/Linux management, I can definitely confirm that. After I uninstalled mine it stuck at 135MHz and 405MHz (P8 and P5 states), and I thought there was some weird thermal throttling going on. I installed the program again and set to High Performance, then uninstalled, and it now works as it should (all states available).
  7. An unlocked BIOS should be able to turn off integrated graphics (the y400/500 has a menu for this, although Intel gfx is disabled by hardware). There should be a "preferred" setting in the Optimus menu, maybe that will enforce your 750m?
  8. Hi again and thanks for your reply. I've replaced the 2.5" 1TB Win8 UEFI with 2.5" SSD with Win7 non-UEFI; that's why I think it has little to do with legacy settings. Again, if there was an installation problem Ubuntu wouldn't boot at all; now it boots only when the 2.5" isn't inserted. - - - Updated - - - Hiya pektus, and thanks for the reply; good to see that someone is changing at least something in their notebook Hmm, so you're running UEFI then? And you've got a 2.5" attached? I wonder if the problem is related to the way the BIOS treats Legacy booting :/ I'm non-UEFI on both Ubuntu and Windows; that's the only difference I can spot between our setups (and win8 of course...) Unfortunately, I've already tried installing without the 2.5" attached which results in the same problem. BIOS (in Legacy) seems incredibly persistent on booting from the 2.5" when there is one. I guess I might just have to reinstall Win7 in UEFI (URGH...) and then try Ubuntu in UEFI too... Thanks for the tip!
  9. can you please confirm that booting to your mSATA works when there is another drive (e.g. storage or separate OS) attached to the 2.5" normal hard disk bay? I can't boot to mSATA with a drive connected to 2.5", that's why I am asking.
  10. Surely someone must have a fan for photos? This is an interesting area for putting fan mods in...
  11. Hi all, I'm having big troubles booting from the mSATA when a hard drive is inserted in the 2.5" hard drive bay. I'm attempting to boot Ubuntu off the mSATA and GRUB (bootloader) won't even load; it just reaches a black screen and enters a high-power state. If I unplug the 2.5" drive and leave it out OR insert it in the CD/DVD with a caddy, it boots mSATA fine. Can anyone please confirm that booting mSATA works with 2.5" inserted? Could this possibly be a manufacturing error? BIOS?
  12. I bought my Y400 manufacturer refurbished, and they were selling other Y400 with the processors you mention, covered by full warranty. I reckon it's OK, seeing that TDP is more a specification on the system fans than anything else.
  13. I barely see any difference from the usual clocks. Reaches about 80C at worst for me when gaming BF3 but haven't tried any GPU stress tests. It seems like this card is just insanely under-clocked out of factory - - - Updated - - - svl7 mentioned that the voltage change doesn't always "kick in" and may have a wrong offset. Basically slide the slider in steps of one, apply the voltage change and see if there's a change in the reported voltage. If not, move the slider one more step, and read voltage. Once you see a change in voltage you know the offset of the slider. GPU-z/Inspector should report correct voltages at all time.
  14. In case the manual doesn't cut it, there's an official video here. You'll have to fast forward to relevant bit, but it should do the job. Good luck!

    Bios 2.00

The Intel start technologies have several requirements/pre-requisites on your system before you can install them on OS. For instance, Rapid Start requires you to force set id=84 on the sleep partition, and an assigned partition of the SSD to be greater than or equal to your RAM size. For more on Rapid start, Intel has a good documentation and instructions here. What Rapid Start does is that it allows a deeper sleep state (S4 I believe) when your computer sleeps, transferring the active session to your SSD instead of RAM (which normal sleep would do). Basically speaking, think of it as a hybrid between sleep and hibernate. Smart Response makes SSD caching available when using HDD as your OS drive. For this you'll need Rapid Storage Technology installed and SATA controller set to RAID amongst other things. Decent guide and explanation here. Smart Connect is a bit of a joke to me and has nothing to do with HDD/SSD or storage. It basically wakes your computer from sleep now and then (which is user configurable) to turn on WiFi, Bluetooth and so on to update Facebook, Mail Clients, RSS feeds etc so that when you log on this will be "fresh". Apparently a CTRL+R was just too much to ask for
  16. I've got a virtual machine on the mSATA and a win7 copy on a 2.5" SSD (old school c300). Disabling GUI boot and some services on Win7 gives about 20s boot time which has spoiled me for life. the virtual machine boots ubuntu in about 25s with VT-x enabled, which I reckon is a good timing too. Don't quite understand why some persist on using the mSATA for caching when there are 256GB options out there for about $120.
  17. This might be a bit of a stupid suggestion, but why not just pull the ribbon cable that connects the touchpad to the motherboard?
  18. Can anyone confirm that mSATA booting works fine with 2.5" attached? My Y400 can't seem to do this when loading mSATA with Ubuntu and my 2.5" with Win7. Booting off 2.5" works fine but mSATA just gives a blank screen. When I remove the 2.5" or insert it in the CD/DVD slot mSATA boots fine though... anyone else with similar problem?
