  1. it is possible, but it doesnt work on all cards. I flashed MSI vBios on Dell GTX560m, 570m, 580, 675M cards. Everything worked. (there were some problems with Fn+up arrow to change brightness on dell 675m + MSI vBios) When I tried to flash MSI vBios on Dell GTX 770M, it bricked the card. Wasnt sure if it was my mistake, so I tried on another Dell 770M card and it bricked it as well. Conclusion, you can flash MSI vBios on some Dell nvidia cards. Just do your research and try to find out if anyone succeeded. If you dont find anything, its 50/50.
  2. Try to boot in safe mode. To me it sounds like dead GPU. If it was "too new" or not compatible, it wouldnt POST or you'd have black screen. Had similar issue with Radeon "video card" *cough*, only worked in safe mode, otherwise it was crashing or screen was black. Card was dead. power consumption shouldnt matter while not under heavy load. I was able to run GTX580 (100W) as replacement for GTX560M without issues on 60W AC Adapter. Under heavy load it switched to battery mode though.
  3. can you confirm GTX980M works ? I know GTX970M does, but haven't find any info on 980m. I'm worried the situation will be the same as with 770m/780m. source perhaps ?
  4. Hey, welcome to the forums. Glad you enjoy your desktop replacement. Most of us here do know what are these machines capable of. My very first contact was with GT780R (the one with GTX560M card) and I've been using it for over 4 years. Upgraded to GTX770M. Thats pretty impressive if you consider the fact its "mostly" a laptop. Never had a laptop to keep up performance for 4 years. Actually, I've never seen a laptop where you can upgrade almost everything. Most of cheap laptops let you change RAM or HDD. In MSI you can swap GPU, CPU, even bluetooth or wifi modules. Its like a desktop. Since then, I sold it (for about 80% of the price I bought it in 2011, sure with upgrades now.) and bought GT70 2QD. Even though Tiatn SLI and GT72 were an option, I made sure Im buying GT70! - GT72 and titan SLI have soldered CPU while GT70 (old chassis) has not. The only probelm is I cannot upgrade to SLI GPU setup. On the other hand, I can upgrade CPU without a need to buy whole mobo. I also dont really feel the need to run SLI. If one 980M wont be enough, I'll just replace it for something new, instead of buying second 980m. Most people nowadays still think "laptops are not for gaming". Well that was true 5 years ago. You should see their faces when I bring this little beast to LAN party and my GTX980M outperforms their desktops Apart form gaming, I use it for video editing (Premiere, AfterEffects) and it works excellent. Although GPU could use ECC memory though :-/ As you said you need to turn some settings down for some games, have a look at ebay or ask here on forums - you can upgrade to GTX970M without any issues. Plug'n'play
  5. 7970M works only with the old vbios - with enduro disabled. I got the card from DELL and luckily it was the old vbios. Plug n play. Other users who got the newer vbios had to blindlfash it. 7970m is about 5% faster than 770m, but its not worth it IMHO. Lot of problems involved - fan speed no longer controlled by GPU temp, if you remove CMOS you will need to go back to BIOS and blindly set the vbios to Legacy mode (screen doesnt work if in EFI compatible) 770m works if its MSI or Clevo card. You dont have to flash clevo card - it works perfectly, but you need modded inf. to install drivers. A bit annoying if you are installing drivers every second week. Apart from that, it works without flashing vBIOS. DELL card does not POST. 970m is a whole different story - even lower temps, double the performance. Worth the money imho.
  6. You sure about this ? The options are in the unlocked bios, thats right, but 1761 has MUXed GPU AFAIK. It's a hardware limitation. There are no physical wires connecting the IGP to any output to external device.
  7. Sure. The only difference is RAID. In fact, you can flash GX660R BIOS to GX660 and you will get the option to configure RAID.
  8. So you did risk it and tried it in the end ?
  9. 3rd gen core i support and newer chipset doesnt sound good enough ?
  10. read my thread here: http://forum.techinferno.com/msi/8907-msi-1761-upgrade-mobo-1763-a.html iTzZent was kind enough and described everything that's needed.
  11. Im just saying I cannot spot a difference between 50fps and 60fps. So getting visible 90fps is pointless for me. 120Hz would be good as that would allow me to use the 3D glasses to get 60fps on each eye. But if you insist... I'll try to overclock my ultrasharp screen. I'm really curious...
  12. I understand. I just dont see a reason to see more than 60 frames per second. My eyes are terrible, Its more than likely I dont see more than 60 even in real world Unless you can "oc" the 60Hz panel to 120Hz ... which is impossible .. But that would be reasonable ...for 3D vision.
  13. Oh thats it ? I thought there is some real benefit to it. 60 is more than I need I'm one of those 99% people who cant notice difference between 60fps and 70fps without fps counter But thanks for explaining!
  14. sorry if this is stupid question, but what has a screen refresh rate to do with overclocking ?
  15. oh, right, sorry, totally missed that. But as you said, any kepler card works in 16F3, so OP should be good to go with Dell 770M without flashing vbios or anything, right ?
  16. GTX970M MSI or Clevo version also works in 16F2 But if you flash dell 770m with msi/clevo vbios, you will brick the card. I can confirm as I've bricked two cards already.
  17. You can try. Chances are it will work! On 16F2 it doesnt POST. Just stuck on MSI logo. Don't worry, it wont explode Go ahead and try it out without flashing...
  18. it depends on which dell card. You can on 675, 560, 570, ... 770M does NOT work. tested. - - - Updated - - - Not sure about 16F3. It definitely doesnt work on 16F2 (and 1761 for that matter.) - sandy bridge notebooks without optimus.
  19. Ok, found a problem, AudioBoost doesnt work. After reinstalling drivers, sound is clear now, but it's too quiet. old MSI is about 30% louder, hence Audioboost. Not sure what to do at this point since there are no drivers or anything for audioboost chip.
  20. no you cannot. This is different for each card. Dell GTX 675M can be flashed with MSI vBIOS, GTX 560M as well. GTX770M cannot. I've tried on 2 different cards and bricked them both. Neither clevo nor msi vbios work on dell GTX770m It's a different card layout, chip is the same. So no, you cannot flash dell GTX 770M with different vbios. (probably that's why dell 770m doesnt work in 16f2 but clevo 770m works.)
  21. Hello, I've recently bought GT70 2qd ms-1763 (the one with 970M), seems to run well apart from the sound. I cant help myself but if I place the two (GT70 and old GT783) next to each other, the older GT783 sound much much better. AFAIK both of them have the same speaker system 2.1 dynaudio ... GT70 sounds much cheaper though, while GT783 has really good and deep sound and bass. The only difference I could spot is that the GT70 uses "Sound blaster cinema" software while the older uses "THX TruStudio" software. Both utilities are set to default settings, yet the difference is day and night. I'm sure Soundblaster cinema software works, since sliding the sliders changes the sound a bit (more bass, mids, ...) but no matter how hard I try, I just cant get it to sound near as good as the old MSI. I wasnt able to get the THX TruStudio software working on the GT70 though - the app runs but changes nothing, EQ sliders do nothing. Do these two laptops have different sound card ? If so, could it be this different ? and why would a newer model get a soundcard worse than modern smartphones? I know it's really hard to explain how it sounds, but trust me, the new GT70 sounds like a 400eur worth acer. GT783 sounds amazing..for a notebook. I'm using same realtek drivers version in both, the only difference is the EQ utility and I cant get the THX to work in the new device. Anybody had the same issue ? any ideas ?
  22. wow, that's quite a lot. This definitely tells me more than "I get xxxx in firestrike" Thanks a lot!
  23. What's the difference in performance ? I mean ingame. Benchmarks are worthless since it rarely shows real-life performance. What's the difference in some games with and without this OC ? 2fps ? 10 fps ? I'd try to squeeze mine if it's worth the effort.
  24. Sandy bridge cpu works on that motherboard ? Anyway, I want to replace CPU as well, so your suggestion would allow me to go for 3rd gen ? Would it be enough and will I encounter any problems when replacing GPU for GTX980M ? (980M doesnt POST on 16F2/1761 boards, 970M does.) 2670qm is bottleneck for GTX970M, yet alone for 980M... Dremel is no problem for me, but I'm concerned about the data cable and power board - the one from 1761 doesnt work ? Also, what about the HDD boards ? You cannot use regular 2.5" HDD ? Well I found some used 3rd gen laptops for about 400-500eur. yeah, twice the price than an upgrade, but I'll have a lots of spare parts, LCD, keyboard, etc.
  25. Hello, would it be possible to upgrade motherboard in MSI GT783 (1761) to GT70(1763) ? Found the boards for about 300USD, seems a nice upgrade from sandy bridge to haswell. (this will also allow me to upgrade GTX770M to 980M I guess) I'm just not sure if it will fit the chassis. Anyone tried ? - no pobelm with USB ports placement etc ? Cassis of both GT780 and GT70 look the same, but there might be some minor differences, that's why I'm asking...
