    For those who don't like the restrictions Lenovo put on their system, here's a BIOS mod that will get you back at least some of the freedom you should have over your own hardware. Features: WLAN card whitelist removed, any (hardware-wise compatible) card should now work hidden BIOS menus unlocked VBIOS tweaked for more performance and better tuning possibilities Keep in mind that not necessarily all of the BIOS options available with this mod will be fully functional, so use the new available settings with care. If you're unsure about something don't change it and ask here, someone might be able to help. Available for v1.07 / v1.09 / v1.10 and v3.05. v2.04 and v2.07 added (only whitelist removal as for now) If you have a different BIOS (or more specific, a BIOS newer than 3.05) I will need a copy of it in order to make it work for your system. Instructions for flashing the modified BIOS v3.05: You need a USB stick prepared to run DOS, here is a guide you can follow in case you don't know how to do this: Guide by @StamatisX - thanks! >>> Before continuing make sure the AC adapter is connected to your laptop and your battery has at least 20% charge remaining. <<< (0) - NOTE: This step is Only necessary if your system isn't already using BIOS v3.05 Update to the official v3.05 BIOS provided by Lenovo . (2) - Download Lenovo_Y510p-Y410p_[v3.05]_modified.zip and put the files of folder [1] to the root of your prepared USB DOS stick. Let the BiosFixer prepare your BIOS for flashing by drag and dropping your backup file on it. Put the created "v305mod.bin" file to the root of your USB DOS drive as well. . (3) - Now you need to downgrade the firmware back to v2.07 (Y510p-Y410p_v207_[stock].zip) in order to flash the mod. . (4) - Boot from your USB DOS drive, when you see the command prompt type BIOS and hit enter. Wait until the BIOS is flashed (you can safely ignore warnings about non-existing regions). . (5) - Once the BIOS flash completed with no errors, type EC and hit enter. Wait until the EC is flashed. Then reboot. . (6) - Go to the BIOS setup menu, load the default settings, apply and reboot. Done. In case you're using an ultra bay GPU follow the instructions in post #2 and flash the vbios.. NOTE: It's crucial that you flash both, BIOS and EC. Having different EC and BIOS versions can in certain situations lead to issues. IMPORTANT: If you want to go back to stock v3.05 you can do that easily by simply using the official update from Lenovo. That's it, nothing additional required in this case.     Hey Everyone, I am attaching a COUPLE of BIOS's to be flashed on the m18xR1 - This one is based off of SVL7's unlocked bios. I've updated SEVERAL items on it. **WARNING: PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR INTEL ME(Intel Management Engine) MUST BE THE ORIGINAL. If' you've updated, please make sure you downgrade back to stock Intel ME! Bios Updates: 1) UNLOCKED BIOS 2) Intel RST v13.5.0 (Understand that this MIGHT NOT work with RAID. It should, but some people had trouble - you can downgrade to the v12 that I've poasted it you have any trouble!) 3) CPU Micro Code has been updated 4) NIC Firmware 5) Video Bios (On-Board) 6) M.2 Support (Through an adapter - but adapter will be recognized) 7) there are SEVERAL other updates but I just can't remember them all, lOl! (Sorry) Version A05-v2.0 is probably better as it is the most stable. I'd SERIOUSLY suggest using that version. IF you want to use this, just understand it MIGHT cause you trouble with RAID... (It worked for some, and didn't work for others) Enjoy!!! Swick (On a side note - if ANYONE is willing, I MIGHT know how to get legacy to work on 800m+ video cards.     Hi! Alienware M17xR4 does not have any whitelists, so you don't need unlocked bios to replace the Wi-Fi card. I think you have to fiddle around with different drivers to find the correct driver for you.

    Howdy! Found the forums here questing to snag a replacement BIOS for my P775TM1, I thought I still had a copy from back in the day (alongside a Prema backup) but apparently I do not. So I'm here to be helpful, and await download approval. Might show off some of my mod projects.

    No. You need two same GPUs. You have to connect eGPU to you monitor/TV. This way games use eGPU. If you just add eGPU to system - games will run on dGPU and picture will be on laptop display. I used fake HDMI adapter (so, system think it is real display) switch main display to fake and move game window on it. BUT, signal go on dGPU anyway (performance drop). I didn’t want to also buy new monitor.

    Hello all here at T|I, I have good news! OK so it's a lon,g story, I'll try to make it short but I want to give as much informations as possible so it can help anyone interested about such project. The story is how to go from this (stock 675m): To this (MSI GTX 1070 MXM): I used to be a gamer when I was younger, then I worked a lot and had no time to play. I came back to gaming last year, and noticed my 2012 M17X R4 was not really up to date for gaming, so it needed to be upgraded. Before you try to do the same, you must be sure you have pretty good knowledge of computer hardware and software, because you may brick your laptop or your GPU in this process, be careful! In order to get a MSI GTX 1070 MXM fully working on a Alienware M17X R4, you need: - unlocked BIOS - the 120 Hz screen - UEFI boot with GPT partition - find a MSI GTX 1070 MXM - dremel the chassis - mod the heatsink so it can fit the GPU - make good BIOS settings so you can boot with the new GPU - install driver with modded .inf - fix GPU throttling issue OK, let's go for the big upgrade, step by step. Unlocked BIOS Eveything you need to know is here: https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/1516-m17x-r4-unlocked-bios-versions/ Thanks to svl7 for this great share! 120 Hz screen You can find it on Ebay, for example here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/162380820165?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT It's required because pascal GPUs need EDP mode to run. The nice thing is there is one LVDS connector in M17X R4 motherboard, even if you have a 60 Hz screen, so you can make the upgrade. It's pretty easy to install, but you may have no boot issue with it, like I had. This is when I had to install unlocked BIOS so I can set graphic settings which let laptop boot with the 120 Hz screen. From what I remember, required setting was "Primary display" to PEG, see here: GPT partition and UEFI BOOT I had MBR partition, and since I'm using my laptop for working I didn't want to reinstall everything. I used a very nice tool to convert my system SSD parition from MBR to GPT called EASEUS Partition Master (they also provide partition and data recovery tools for years, maybe you already know this company): http://www.easeus.com/partition-manager-software/convert-mbr-to-gpt.html They offered a discount so is cost me around 30$ to convert without having to reinstall, which is cheap for the time and all datas it saved me. Then, you just need to make sure your boot options are set to pure UEFI, which means Load Legacy option ROM is disabled, here in the BIOS: I noticed it can't be disabled if you're running a GPU which vbios doesn't have UEFI compliant driver. If this is the case, you'll get the "can't detect MXM card GOP driver" error like this: Once again, thanks to svl7 you can fix this using vbios with UEFI driver for your GPU: https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/2079-m14x-r2-m17x-r4-m18x-r2-uefi-fast-boot-secure-boot-gpu-issues-solved/ This is not what I did, I just enabled integrated graphics again (it's UEFI compliant), so I can disable Load legacy option. Then I could put the 1070 in, and boot successfully. With this option enabled, I had 8 beeps "GPU not recognized" error at boot, stuck with no POST like a loser. GO BUY A GTX 1070 MXM Here too, you can get headaches. It's expensive, and hard to find. I searched a lot, and I can give you a few advices. But he explained me it was because for some reason he didn't received notification from the forum so he didn't knew my message, and missed the sale. But even he was not the seller, he gave me some advices which were really helpful when I was stuck with 8 beeps no boot problem because of the Legacy mode yesterday. Thanks a lot man, maybe you missed this sale but I'm sure you'll get lot of others since you're so helpful, thanks again! - go buy directly from China, where you can find it much cheaper. You have one chinese marketplace to rule them all: it's called taobao: https://world.taobao.com/ Problem is if you don't speak chinese, you may have trouble just to get their chat software working, it's same kind as alibaba trade manager for those who knows. So buying from taobao is like entring an unknown area, sellers there mostly only speak chinese, some don't want to sell out of China, so it's really weird to buy from there. But prices are really interesting, for example around 3000 Yuans (410$) for a GTX 1060 MXM, and around 4900 yuans (665$) for a GTX 1070 MXM. If you're looking for a cheap pascal MXM GPU, this may feel like heaven: -instead of trying to learn chinese, find a way to make dropship. There are lot of companies for taobao drophip, like Yoybuy for example. I found a russian MSI forum member whose nickname is Onside182, his name is Andrew and I made the deal with him. He knows Taobao sellers, so he dealt with that for me. He was serious and helpful too, and you can chose to contact him on russian forum: https://forum-ru.msi.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1111063 (you must be registered there to see his profile), or just contact me so I give you his email address, he'll deal for your taobao order and you can pay him with paypal. Let's make some room inside Yeah know it's bad, but honestly I don't care about chassis integrity when it's time to get overkill Firestrike score. So yes, you have to dremel the chassis to make some room so the MSI GTX 1070 will fit in. First, you need to disassemble the whole laptop, so you can get the motherboard out: You need to remove little sides on the MXM connector, so the card can fit in. Before After: You must get a modified MXM connector like that: Then you also need to cut part of the chassis, here is the result: Now, you can install the card: MOD the GPU heatsink to improve cooling Here you have 2 ways: keep stock heatsink, and mod it so it can fit as explained here: https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/10982-m17x-r4-gtx-1060-upgrade/#comment-155003 Or build a custom made heatsink. This is what I did, I ordered this heatsink with the GPU: https://world.taobao.com/item/540331819333.htm?spm=a312a.7700714.0.0.ZzDuN1#detail%201%20sortie%20sur%20le%20cot%C3%A9%20ok%20et%204%C3%A8me%20stripe%20pour%20cpu%20ok It was designed for a MSI computer, but it can be modified for the M17X R4 since copper stripes are soldered horizontally. You need to unsolder it, and solder the copper stripes and radiator from stock heatsink instead. You also need to cut off the part which must cover the CPU heatsink, which is not useful. This way, you have a more efficient heatsink, because it was designed for pascal GPU: Soldering heatsinks is crap, when you heat one side, you can easily unsolder the other side by mistake because all heat will be transmitted everywhere very quicly. The trick is to put side you don't want to unsolder in water, and heat the other side where you want to unsolder with a torch. But I warn you: soldering this stuff is a real nightmare. With my modded heatsink (which is so ugly and crappy I can't even make picture of it for now), I reached 72°C max while benchmarking, which seems to be pretty good temp. Right now writing on forum, GPU temp is at 55°c. Spend some time finding the good BIOS settings You'll have to try out some settings, and you may have no boot issues, black screens, and many errors. You'll feel very lonely at this time, I know. But searching forums saved me most of the time! If you're in trouble, just search and ask You can boot? Well you still have to wait a little until it works! Once we're here, we can boot with the GTX 1070 inside the laptop, and it appears as something like Microsoft basic display in Windows device manager. So we need to download official driver from Nvidia, extract it and mod the .inf file. I used this howto: http://null-bin.blogspot.fr/2015/08/how-to-modify-nvidia-notebook-driver.html There are many others, it's well documented on the web. Lines I added are those ones: %NVIDIA_DEV.1BE1.057B.1028% = Section408, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1BE1&SUBSYS_057B1028 and NVIDIA_DEV.1BE1.057B.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070" Then it just installed fine after disabling Windows driver signature enforcement of course. I could even install whole Nvidia Geforce experience stuff. The GPU POWER LIMIT throttling issue OK so you think it's installed, now it's over, after all those countless hours searching, testing and tweaking our good old M17X R4? Of course you launch a benchmark, and now you notice another problem. GPU core frequency is good, then it goes low, then it goes high again, then low again... GPU is throttling. I went into HWinfo, and noticed GPU power consumption was going higher than 110W, then I had GPU throttle, it went down around 50W, then it went up again, and so on... I searched and found nothing. I thought it was because I only have 240W PSU and I must change for a 330W one. Then and angel appeared and said to me "Hey, man, this must be a BIOS setting related issue, just fix it". So I went in the BIOS again, and I noticed this setting called "adapter warning". I just disabled it, and now it's running fine. When checking, I can see I still have POWER LIMIT message, but it doesn't slow down GPU frequency, no throttling anymore. This is the funny part where the 2012 laptop kicks ass to BGA craps Yeahhhhhhhhhhhh!!! We can say we made it, the MSI GTX 1070 is working in the Alienware M17X R4: Now, please have a look at this latest Alienware 17 R3 (BGA crap) Firestrike result: http://www.3dmark.com/fs/8941795 Yeah I know, this is serious expensive hardware we have here: a 6820HK CPU and a GTX 1070, such Alienware laptop must cost around 2500$, no? Of course, my poor old laptop cannot not beat this beast, what do you think?     Hi! No, I don't think it's vbios related. I've never had this problem, but I don't think it could be related to the TDP limitation, unfortunately I don't know why it's happening to you. Maybe this is possible, but I can not help you with unlocking the bios for Dell Precision M6700.

    Hello, Recently I bought an Eurocom X8 and I am having trouble getting the brightness control to work. My laptop has 2 970m GPUs in SLI, and a 120Hz screen LP173WF2 which uses eDP. I couldn't get it to work in Windows 8.1 until I flashed a Prema BIOS and Prema VBIOS on the GPUs, then tried like 7 or 8 different NVIDIA drivers until it worked. However, I recently updated to Windows 10 and the brightness control has stopped working. I would really like to get it working again but in Windows 10 instead of Windows 8.1. To me, it seems clear that it is not a hardware issue since I did get it working at some point. However, the weird thing about this is, the one time I got it working when the screen brightness was set to 0/the lowest, the display turned off completely... I don't think this is normal since I have never seen any other Clevo laptop do this, but perhaps I am wrong and that is normal. I emailed Prema and we talked back and forth and couldn't really figure it out. I tried a newer stock BIOS/EC that he said would work with Windows 10 for brightness, but that didn't help, so then I went back to the latest Prema BIOS/EC (. I'm thinking it's something to do with the NVIDIA drivers, perhaps a configuration issue or something, maybe there is a setting I can change somewhere, or I need a custom NVIDIA driver somehow or something? I am willing to pay money to whoever gets this fixed for me. Thanks.

    Recently picked up a 2570p at a local buy nothing group and decided to....test it Immediately upgraded the CPU/SSD/RAM/amount of dust found within. This (formerly) dusty turd came with BIOS F.41. I have not upgraded it! I tried the 2570P-OC ME image earlier in the thread and it broke Intel ME, so I re-flashed the original ME (fpt.exe -f stockme.bin -me) portion I grabbed while in there (fpt.exe -d stockme.bin -me) using info found across a few places to fix it. Since it didn't work, I dug around and had an idea! I loaded the .bin I extracted with FPT from my laptop, and compared the Intel ME ICC Profile settings against the ME ICC Profile settings found in the stock latest BIOS of an Asus Maximus V Hero board. After modifying a bunch of them, I built it into a file "tryit.bin" and flashed it (fpt.exe -f tryit.bin -me). Even though it was the full image instead of just the ME portion of the BIOS, I only flashed the ME portion. Over the past few days, I've picked up a headache lot of info about this nonsense. But hey, I was able to overclock my laptop with XTU 4.2 on Windows 10, lol. Barely. http://valid.x86.fr/470k3r (ignore the benchmark. I turned the multiplier down and ran a bench to see if it'd boost and it sure as heck didn't. I have no idea how to use ThrottleStop.) if this is remotely interesting to you all at this point, let me know and I'll put a little effort into documenting what I did. More of a step by step so some of you can brick modify your 2570p! Disclaimer! I have no experience with this stuff. This was literally the first time I ever opened Flash Image Tool, I used it and closed it because I had built an image to flash....which flashed successfully.

    In case you own a Lenovo Y410p or Y510p laptop, you might be interested in upgrading its performance by installing an external graphics card. Ultrabay eGPU adapter designed by @gerald was proven to be a convenient plug-and-play option to do exactly that. However, for a long time only an AMD-branded GPUs could be used due to limitations in the Lenovo's stock BIOS. The purpose of the modified firmware presented here is to expand the range of available GPUs by enabling Nvidia support on Gerald's Ultrabay eGPU adapter. Huge thanks to: @MWichni - For efficiently assisting me during the development of this mod. By flashing dozens of BIOS builds over the course of several weeks and thoroughly describing the effects observed (or the lack thereof), he enabled me to fully understand necessary parts in BIOS structure and come up with a final solution. @svl7 - Whose unlocked BIOS / Whitelist mod has served as a basis for this modification. His discovery of a security hole in V2.07 BIOS has provided us with a convenient BIOS flashing method that does not require a physical programmer. The Unlocked BIOS and WLAN whitelist mods originally designed by him are also implemented in this BIOS mod. @gerald - For designing the aforementioned adapter. Without it, all this work would make very little sense. Key features: Resolves the "40-second reboot" issue normally encountered while using Nvidia graphics cards with Ultrabay eGPU adapter, thus allowing all Nvidia cards to be used. Based on the latest V3.08 BIOS. Includes Svl7's WLAN whitelist removal mod - for the convenience of aftermarket WLAN card users. Includes Svl7's BIOS debug menu mod - for the ease of experimentation with newly available features, e.g. attempting to use Nvidia Optimus to pass eGPU video back to laptop's display. NB! Svl7's Debug Menu is not a toy! It contains a lot of options that are either not supported or partially supported by the hardware platform and/or can disturb its normal operation or prevent the PC from booting up at all.     Hi! Try to use BIOS recovery procedure: Take a USB flash drive, go to "My computer" Right click on the USB drive and select Format. Change the filesystem from NTFS to FAT32. Format the drive. The flash drive does not need to be a 'bootable' flash drive. Leave it as is. 1. Download archive ZIVY2.rar from this link: https://files.fm/u/tzhj7h49k 2. Extract archive ZIVY2.rar and copy the file ZIVY2.bin to the USB flash drive (format FAT32). 3. Unplug your laptop from the AC adapter. 4. Disconnect the battery from the motherboard. With everything disconnected hold the power button for 20-30 seconds. This purges residual power from the board. Disconnect the hard drive (This ensures that the USB flash drive is read first. I'm not sure if this is necessary, but it may be need). 5. Plug in your USB flash drive into any USB port. 6. Press and hold Fn+R buttons together. 7. While HOLDING Fn+R, plug in the AC adapter. 8. While still HOLDING Fn+R press the Power Button. 9. You should hear the fans turn on very loudly, no display, and no keyboard lights. Let go of Fn+R after a few seconds You should hear a rather loud series of beeps. This is the BIOS being flashed. Let it beep repeatedly as long as it needs to. When the process is done, the beeping will stop, and the laptop will turn itself off. It may also reboot. If all went well, you're screen should now be working just fine. If it doesn't work, then try to use Fn+B combination instead Fn+R. If it doesn't work, then try to use another USB flash drive (USB2.0, not USB3.0), also try to use USB with smallest size, for example 2-4 GB. Also, try to use another USB port in laptop. If it doesn't help, try to connect external monitor.

    I don't know if this has been here posted before and I couldn't find anything after searching but if it has, then mods can please delete. NOTE: I didn't create any of these programs. Download the file attached, it contains RWeverything ver 1.6.5 portable and fan control tools by Pherein v1.03 all in one zip 2. Extract the folder "portable" to wherever you want. 3. Go to folder Portable\Fan Control Tools\configs and open Fanprofileapplier.ini and FanProfileEditor.ini and change RWeverythingpath = (point it to where rw.exe is) 4. Now to test if the app is actually working or not. Go to folder Portable\Fan Control Tools and open Fan profile Applier.exe 5. Choose notebook name as gt780DX or 16f2-12 for gt70, gt60 and ge60. Choose profile as Quite.rw ( Do NOT choose max.rw), check remember in all boxes. It should look like this : 6. Select apply and listen if your fan speed goes down. If it did, it worked !!! 7. Now to make your own profile, first open Fan profile editor.exe and choose notebook name and then simple (or complex if you want to mess around more). 8. Now click load profile and load whatever profile you want ( I prefer default) and change the values of temperature or fan speed to whatever you want. Do NOT put fan speed below 20% or above 80%. Especially NOT 100% or your pc will shut down. It should look something like this: I recommend opening profiles "aggressive" and "quite" to get some idea about how temps and fan % is set. 9. Now, change profile name to whatever you want. eg: Custom1, gaming etc and click save profile. 10. Now go to fan profile applier.exe and select the profile you created and hit apply. Dont forget to make sure all the "remember" boxes are checked. All changes will be reverted to default each time you restart the pc so don't worry about messing things up permanently.     GTX 680m Heatsink modding in 4 spots to fit the GTX 1070. These are the different sizes I had to use and the high temp electrical tape can be seen on the GPU as a secondary measure on top of the conformal Liquid metal about to be applied to CPU and heatsink. MG chemicals Silicone conformal Coating applied to CPU and GPU PCB boards to avoid short circuit.

    Know this thread is long time closed, but feel obliged to make one minor correction. Calling the two of you geniuses is by far an understatement... Had exactly the same problem. Was desperate and about to buy a new mobo. This fixed both my laptop and my nervous breakdown... :-) Writing from my 2012 P170EM x GTX1060, formerly known as "brick", which just had its life extended at least 2 years!

    Hi, I purchased an MSI 1070 for attempted use in my m17x r4 and it is not detected when I boot with it in my system. Unlocked a11 bios reports "not detected" for discrete graphics when trying to use this card. Can anyone advise? Am I missing a step? I have a 1920x1080 60hz display, but thought that was fine as long as I was running in optimus mode. @naightmehr, you've been such a help in the past. Do you have any input on this?

    use high performance in energy options and download HWiNFO64 portable, open the exe. and select "sensors" There's a small fan down there, choose the speed and click on "manual set" you will have full control of the fan speed C:
