  2. Project 1 The back panel Some time ago some one over the NBR forum had an idea to improve the cooling on the alienware M17 by creating a custom back pannel. I decided to give it a try the goal is improve the size of the air intake and the airflow across the laptop so i though about it that way if i put someting directly over the fan and a hudge air intake just beside it should force the air to cycle inside the laptop. click on the pictures to get a bigger version so we start with this And this is the fan positionings (note that pic is not from my m17 i found it on the web and it was faster to use it then take a picture of mine after i was done with the mod and wanned to game) so the idea is to build something like that (ya ugly i know my picture manipulation skills are VERRY lacking) Material used this mesh use a cuting tool in my case a dremel 4000 with a flex shaft and the metal cutting wheel cut the shape in the mesh after that cut the shape of the air intake in the back pannel (that's water on my back paneli had to clean it cause cutting through a sort of plastic/rubber makes an anoying powder that stick and "burn" your finger) once done assemble both part and ajust the mesh to be sure it fit with mounting holes and other stuf then glue all part together and enjoy. i also covered the original grills that where just over the fans Project 2 a preview of what is comming The pcb you see has been custom designed by me for that project my projects are posted faster over there Granyte and cie but i'll end up posting them here anyway i have quite some modifications plans for that laptop so what do you guys think?

  3. OK, people have been asking for this for a while so I thought since I can tear this down in about 10min, I should do a quick write-up. Like the title said, I did this quick so pictures wont be the best but you will get a better understanding on how to teardown the system enough to at least repaste etc.. Here we go 1 - Shot of the underside 2 - Remove battery and the 4 screws in red to remove bottom cover 3 - Bottom Cover Off: Remove Screws Labeled I (5 of them in Red), P ( 5 in Blue), and HD Bay screws (4 in Green) 4 - Remove Hard Drives 5 - Remove Screws In Empty Hard Drive Bay (4 in blue) 6 - Remove the LCD Hinge Screws ( 4 in Red) and disconnect the wireless antennae (circled and traced in Red) 7 - Flip System over and open screen 8 - Pop off the media control panel by lifting the back right and left corners until it "pops" off. I find using my guitar pick helps with this 9 - Once the back corners have popped loose, run the guitar pick around the edges to loosen the rest (around the keyboard) 10 - Picture of the media panel loose but still connected with the ribbon cable (disconnect this now) 11 - Remove the Keyboard and macro keyboard screws ( 6 in Red) 12 - Disconnect all cables from the motherboard and graphic cards ( 11 in total) and 2 more lcd screws ( 2 in blue) This includes: 2 ribbon cables for the macro keyboard 2 ribbon cables for the keyboard 3 for the handrest/trackpad (2 on bottom, 1 near the right crossfire cable connector) 2 for the screen (one toward the bottom left, one at the top left) 2 for the crossfire cable (labeled L and R on the cable) 13 - Remove 3 more screws securing the cover ( 3 in Red). You will need to pop off this cover starting at the back... just lift until it pops off. If it is being difficult, make sure all screws labeled "P" on both the top and bottom are removed. 14 - Once the cover is off, remove the screws (going from #1-4) on your heatsinks.... clean and repaste. If anyone wants pics of the heatsinks removed just let me know (I took a couple but not really necessary for this guide). Once again, I did this all very fast so I know it is not as polished as it could have been.... but I wanted this out sooner than later for everyone to use. Let me know if anything is unclear etc... D.

  6. ok so i am downloading now, i will post some screens and my FPS. stay tuned sorry for my lack of photography skills lol. well as promised here are some screens that i took while on my 1st tour of the alpha. i was running the game at 775/1080 the whole time at MAX alpha settings and what i can tell you is... it runs buggy it will spike to about 40ish the drop to below 25 when there is heavy action going on. there are WAY to many bugs, and glitches but again this is an alpha. the game was run at 720p the whole time because of an error on dells part (i posted a thread on here) so for you 720p users you will be fine, but us 900p we will have to pray that sevenowns will hook us up with an epic config file. anyway if you lower teh res, you can run this game pretty smoothly on alpha... well i posted another thread on how to get in (and it woks) have fun in the alpha if your luck like me :DDD

  7. Here's a link to the first one if anyone wants to try it, as it's got a modded signing file it will probably give you a warning for the driver signature, if anyone has used modded drivers before it's fine to just continue through it. The signing is mainly just for WHQL status. 280.19_A.7z And here's a link to the second one. Let me know if there's any issues or what you see when trying it. http://www.mediafire.com/?l59my5q6zm6dmr5

  11. Ok, since it seems that there's no method to read out the voltage with software I decided to measure it directly at the CPU. The datasheet of the CPU describes each pin, there are VCC (processor core power supply) and VSS (processor ground) pins directly at the edge of the socket, which makes it easy to measure the voltage. VCC_sense and VSS_sense would've been possible as well, but they're not at the edge of the socket, which makes it more difficult to put cables there without accidentally touching another pin and shorting something. I was mainly interested at the voltage while the CPU works at the max multi (26x) on all threads. My multimeter always reported 1152mV. There's of course a certain inaccuracy while measuring this, especially since I don't have the most expensive equipment, but it's accurate enough for my needs. This value will allow me to figure out a VID pinmod for raising the voltage a little bit. At idle the CPU was at about 900mV. In case you're interested in the voltage at a certain multi, let me know as long as I still have the cables in the socket. Though after reading some Intel datasheets it seems that the voltages may vary from CPU to CPU, I'm not quite sure about this, maybe someone here knows more about this.
