  2. According to the guys over at mvktech, the 580m can be overvolted from the default 0.87v to 0.92v. Seems a little but it allowed the card to reach and go beyond 560 Ti clocks. Raking in around 17.8k GPU in Vantage!

  3. Now you can configure an M17-r3 with 3D screen and Nvidia 580m. Enjoy!!! Just did the config and it works!!!!

  4. It's still in use, well there were some crazy revisions for the German grammar in the past years, they might have changed some rules, with the ß, I dpn't know, but it's still in use. I wish they'd get rid of it, it's totally unnecessary. ____ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlPdG5EoKYs

  6. Well I did it, ordered M17x R3 - i7 2630QM - 4Gb - 580M GTX - 120Hz 1080p - 320gb SSD - Killer network card - 1yr LoJack With a further 8gb RAM and a Crucial M4 128GB SSD on order from 3rd party as well. ETA 16th August (at the latest). So I suppose on paper I am technically an M17x owner now edit: As soon as I get it I'll try and get some benchmarks up, with further ones once I get the RAM/SSD fitted. Going to look to see what common benchmarks are posted/asked for on here now!

  8. I got my 240W PSU today, and some quick tests indicate that it indeed helps! I only did some very quick testing so far since I don't have sufficient cooling possibilites, but I managed some 32M wprime tests, not a single crash I pushed up to 28x on all cores and 143 Baseclock... hehehe. PSU peaked at 210W according to my kill-o-watt, the regular M15x PSU tripped instantly at about 200W. 6.414 seconds so far... more than 4GHz on eacht thread, though I guess some of the programs and processes running in the background slowed it down a bit. I'll do some real benching soon and then I'll see how much further I can push this.

  11. It's hard to say. The prices can fluctuate quite a bit. I remember there was a bit drop in SSD prices at some point but for a while now the lowest I see is about $100/60GB or $200/128GB. The new drives that came out are little more expensive but the prices on the old ones (SF1200) are still the same. My philosophy is that you get it now if you need it. What am I saying, of course you need it. Pretty much any SSD you can get today has a noticably higher performance than mechanical hard drives.

  12. Trust me, it's worth the waiting... I run Vantage, CPU tests only, just to check how the temperatures are holding since I applied ICD and I am hitting 21K with the laptop just sitting on the cryo lx and my temps maxed out at 96C when before I was hitting 100 C (OCed at 3.6GHz 96/94 TDP/TDC).

  13. I've just read the article on Nvidias blog, and to be honest I think it's not such a big thing, the Nvidia control panel is very different from the CCC, and it has indeed higher standard settings as far as I remember, but power users adjust the settings anyway so that they fit their needs (no matter whether there's an AMD or Nvidia card in the system) And even if you don't change the standard settings, a lot of in-game graphic settings overwrite the CCC/NCP settings anyway, so I don't think that's a big problem. Lower quality settings is definitely an advantage for benchmarks, but most people tweak the settings for benching since they want to score as high as possible. At least Nvidia didn't forget about their crazy tweaks in the past And well, we can't be 100% sure whether there aren't any hardware tweaks (for boosting benchmark performance) implemented in the GPU itself, I think Nvidia and AMD as well have both some tricks for this.Even though good drivers are crucial, the possibilities of software optimization are limited, a lot of things are hardware-bound and depend on the architecture of the GPU, not every architecture supports the latest AA modes and some are better at Tesselation than others. I think this is more interesting than the standard software settings of the GPU control panel, they can get adjusted, whereas the architecture of your GPU can't. What's really interesting imo are (besides the overall performance) the post-processing capabilities of the GPU, this can make a huge difference in how a game looks and feels, and there are big differences between different GPUs regarding the quality of depth of field, shadow mapping, HDR effects etc. Way more important than the standard settings of the GPU control panel, just my 0.02
