  2. So while we wrap up the M17x-R3 review (likely to be combined with the M18x review) we decided to embark on finding a nice template for our video intro. I'm pretty sure we're going to settle on this one, give us your feedback and let us know what you think! EDIT: We have settled on the final cut of the intro video. It's about 8 seconds long, has the full animation of the background scaling larger with the music, single flame and large font. Poll is now closed, thanks to all those that gave their input. 3. @Brian: That's a great song, but it's not Metallica... I think you know what I mean This is Metallica, Disposable Heroes live for the first time, Master of Puppets wasn't even released then James Hetfield in best form... vocals and rythm guitar, played perfectly.. I wish they could still do this...

  4. metallica 'ets', nice!~ (altho 'one' ftw!~ ) while pretty eclectic (well, xcept ghetto) from pop to classical, it's usually either rock or electronica playing here!~ dood, couldn't grow up 15 minutes from san dimas and not rock out to: <object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PJOHbzQwGw?version=3"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PJOHbzQwGw?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></object> <object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1tj2zJ2Wvg?version=3"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1tj2zJ2Wvg?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></object> and last, but most definitely not least - my number one all time favorite band : <object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlq0lYB3iSM?version=3"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlq0lYB3iSM?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></object>

  5. Dude you can't hate on justin beaver, his purple shoes and tight jeans are awe inspiring, especially his haircut. I'm driving down to the bay soon, keep that vapo ready. And to stay on topic, since most of you guys like metal, this is one of the only metal bands that I really liked as a kid: <object width="480" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2jfV1DzcuQ?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2jfV1DzcuQ?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="390" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

  9. I'm in modding mood We (me and a friend of mine, G73JW owner) just put a 6970m in the G73JW to see whether it works. The system POSTed and loaded Windows, but unfortunately the screen stayed blank Some background infromation about this whole story... When I exchanged the CPU of this machine a couple of weeks ago I decided to take a look at the GPU as well, as the system was already disassembled. (Note, it's a real pain to take apart this machine... totally unlike the AW systems... you have to tear it down completely, take out the mobo and then turn it around to get access to GPU/CPU...) Anyway, the GPU has nothing to do with an MXM-card... except for the connector which seems to be the same (at least physically, I have no idea whether it's the same electronically)... but see yourself: As you can see, the connector is physically identical, but the die is positioned differently than on a standard card... As the G73JH has the GPU at the MXM-conform place we got a heatink of the JH model. After some cutting and grinding it did fit the 6970m. The problem was that you can't fix the card with screws since the holes of the G73JW 460m are at totally different places... but that's nothing a little bit duct tape cant fix The important thing is that the heatsink can be screwed on very well. But well, like I said, it didn't work... a couple of hours work for nothing. So we had to disassemble the system one more time to put the 460m back, lol. I knew the chance of the 6970m working was small... but since the G73JH (5870m) can run with a MSI 5870m as well, I thought it's worth a try. Maybe it's only an issue with a hardware ID, I have no idea... like I said, POST was fine, system booted, but screen stayed black. If anyone of you have an idea to get it working, let me know! There are two more pictures as attachment which show the 6970m on the mobo and in the system, if you're interested... just as "proof"

  10. Just wondering if anyone had seen this/planned to buy one. With 16hrs battery and a docking keyboard/battery it looks intriguing. I might pick one up to replace what my eeepc does now. Asus Eee Pad Transformer Review - Asus Transformer TF101 - Eee Pad Transformer EP101

  15. I was browsing the others forums and I come across this picture. I would die for a paint job like this, so here is the question, do you think this is achievable in our M18x which is an aluminum cover? I know inap aka iloveboobs aka iwillkeepyoudistractedwithmydesktops did and awesome job on his m17x-R2? Do you think this is doable with the the 3m tape? Wait a minute, It was you INAP!! OMG wow nice job, now do you think this can be done in the m18x?

  20. In a bold move Alienware decided to take the m15x outta the market. This is surprising to a lot of us since it m15x was still up on Tuesday, it seems we got ninja nerfed again. There is a big article about it in engadget which i am linking (hope I don't get the ban-hammer) In my humble opinion I think this was a calculated move by AW to replace the M15x with the m14x. Will this be the last we hear about the all powerful m15x? omly time will tell. Link to engadget article. Dell kills Alienware M15x, government denies it ever existed -- Engadget

  22. Yeah that was my M15x, it was a magnesium case, but should be the same for aluminum. Had the powder coat shop blast it and powder coated for like $60. But I recommend buying a spare case. Was thinking about contacting colorware to see what they can do, since they do the soft touch paint like dell is using now. The white r2 case was done by speedy, he painted it with automotive paint. Came out looking hella sweet. I bought and sold it already.

  26. It won't look like shit, its gonna be better than most LEDs you see at best buy or whatever. It won't be near the quality of the M17x-R2 RGB LED but aside from slightly subpar contrast ratio it should be decent. The figures (e.g. CR, brightness) dell quotes for all of its displays are not accurate anyway. Websites that tested them with a colorimeter found lower (and sometimes higher) values than on Dell's spec sheet, the M11x display is a prime example of having a very shit CR of 150ish. But the M17x-R3 has a measured CR of 527 by notebookcheck (dell says 500:1) and a brightness of 243 nits (dell says 300). So it's entirely possible that a colorimeter might show the M18x CR to be >500 (least that is my hope). If it ends up having at least 500:1 CR, it will be a decent display.

  27. Everybody wonders where the 460mGTX compares to the 555. Here is a benchmark from the asus forums to let you know on a base model with the 2630qm and the 460. Result ASUS G73SW Owners' Lounge (wrist slap for pasting NBR link).. sorry had to to provide info Not bad figuring I've already topped 83xx. So the 555 is not far off from the 460. We are not equal by any means, but not far off. BW, StevenX

  29. I know the M17x-R3 suffers from that, and since it and M18x share the same chipset, it's clear the M18x will be limited the same way.

  32. All good buys Brian, congratz! I'd personally go with a SATA III SSD... Those chipset limitations can be fixed by the OS tweaks we discussed, and then you'd get the advertised performance. As for reliability, gotta agree with you there, Intel seems like the safest choice /my thoughts

  33. Re: Suttering This isnt microstutter - microstutter is very very different. Microstutter doesnt actually stutter, so its a bit of a misnomer. Microstutter is when 2 gpu's render their frames too close together, making the output look like almost half of the FPS currently being rendered. This is present on all multi-gpu systems, and can be somewhat rectified with vsync+triple buffer. What you are experiencing is most probably due to your SSDNOW having interrupt stutter, which happens with all jmicron SSDs. There isnt really a fix for this unless you buy expensive HDD caching software (i forget what it was called) or you toss it out. The whole jmicron generation was junk. Switching temporarily to a normal hard disk will show this to be the case. Sorry for your bad luck - whoever sold you the drive, try get a refund. -Ash

  34. that would be great! EDIT: found this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/575524-thermal-paste-reapplication-photos-56k-warning.html just pics and is not step by step EDIT: i found a youtube video Upgrading the M11x R2 with internal Bluetooth module and high end thermal compound: Alienware m11xR2 high speed modding apparently the M11 and M14 are very similar internally, but i still think both are a bit tedious to get inside, practically we have to remove everything to get the CPU / GPU

  40. It just occurred to me: If I were the mayor of the city where OBL was killed, I'd try to preserve his compound and turn it into a tourist destination. Can you imagine how much cash that would rake in? I'd even have re-enactments of the navy seals taking out OBL. Damn man I see $$$$$$$.
