According to the NBR forums LVNeptune has discovered that the clevo 485m he bought for use in his M17x R3 was manufactured by DELL. Now, why would this be? Why would dell build notebook graphics cards to sell to a competitor? I think we will see the M18x get the 485m very soon after launch, or perhaps with launch. Additionally, when the m18x gets it, so will the m17x R3. Im excited! -Ash

Geoffx and vlads24 (or vads24 can't remember) were being bickering little 5-year olds on the point of getting the 485m. I told them to shut it and GTFO, but they didn't and batboy shut us down. The new thread doesn't seem to have much going on, they contacted Nvidia, but of course got no reply. So far, the 485m works with the 120hz screen, but not with 3d, and fans have to be set manually with Hwin32 <--(I think that's what it is called?)

download CF Extension program, ill try to find the link it allows you to set a custom CF profile on any game that launches. They talk about it here having trouble finding a working download link. Let me know if it helps and you can find it if not I believe I have it and can upload it for you some how. I hope you're right about the subwoofer, it's one thing I felt that was severely lacking in the R2 and R3. Well I think it will be released in a week from now. The problem is that they are testing the configuration on their live website for testing purposes and it's getting people excited. I do agree they should issue a press release for two new exciting models. I just hope Dell doesn't decide to push M14x and M18x back to E3.

Both monitors where calibrated with the same Spyder 3 Pro calibrator The Dell monitor with sRGB profile selected, at 100% brightness, 50% contrast Dell with Adobe RGB profile selected, 75% Brightness Dell monitor with Adobe RGB profile, 30% Brightness I will stick with the 30% brightness since its not straining my eyes and the colors are very similar between the two screens. In all honesty, I am probably gonna get her sprayed in auto paint. Black is my usually color, but it's a little boring, and I always liked the color of the Dell Covet (my second fav lappy). So if anyone has a request and they dont have photoshop skillz, post here and I will give it a shot. -Ash

To me the M18x is the best looking AW laptop made so far. The R3 is obviously almost as nice since they have similar designs but construction quality difference between the two will be huge. Bottom line is they address two very different markets. The R3 is for people that want a semi portable gaming laptop and the M18x is for full on performance enthusiasts that demand the absolute best in everything. For me neither is really the ideal fit, the M14x fits that perfectly so once I review the M18x, it's going up for sale most likely.

My guess would be it's hard to cool down any graphic beast if you go with thin factor in mind. I wouldn't mind thick, if it can be made lighter. It just seems way too heavy imo. M11x is too heavy too in that respect. I know it's not a good comparison, but if you compare to Thinkpads which lack dedicated GPU you have T420 @ 4.3lbs (vs M14x @ 7 lbs) and X220 @ 3.3-3.8 lbs (vs M11x @ 5lbs). I do agree - something portable but still relatively powerful and well built.

To me this makes no sense at all. Since USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0 hardware, what sense does it make to put limitations on the hardware??? This has me stumped and I hope it doesn't reflect the type of thinking that went into the overall design of the system.

^^ the problem with that approach is that the R2 is loosing value quite fast, so for me selling it to get $$ for the new AW generation was a no-brainer.

Wow thats a lot of cash... how much will the 2820qm upgrade be, and how much to get one off ebay and slap it in? Also, how much ram for that? Im hoping 16gb at least. -Ash

I asked a friend of mine that worked at dell about M18x's price in the US. He said a 6970M xfire system with base configuration and 1080p should run close to $2500 with tax...yikes! That's $700 more than I sold my R2 for and this system will have an inferior screen, base sandy bridge CPU, less ram, no blu ray, no intel wifi. The biggest advantage will be the GPU power which should be about 20-30% faster than 5870M Xfire. But if you consider that 5870M xfire pretty much runs any game out there with max settings, woudl you really notice the difference between say 80 fps and 100 fps?

Awesome news! I've also got some good news, I received my M17x-R2 payment today and have 3 people interested in purchasing the M17x-R3 so I should have the R3 sold in short order. Hopefully by next week I have the full funds to grab the M18x on release day And Viking, it is a tough decision

Ok! Good news! Just got off the phone with alienware new system agent. I told him I wanted to cancel my m17x order and get an 18x and am willing to spend more money to do it. He confirmed the m18x is comming very soon, withen my 21 day return period, edd is the 21st, he said to call him back and he can arrainge an rma with no restocking fee. I'll have it ordered on it's release day and expect a very thorough gamut of benchmarks upon arrival! =)

Nice run man, it seems the GPU starts becoming CPU limited after 850ish. I bet a 2920xm is needed to push it much further than 4200.

But maybe I sounded too serious; let me rephrase: If my PSU would die, I would much prefer if my battery would then allow me to use my lappy for 8 hours than only 1 hour and a half, especially because I would then need my computer to send an email to Dell Tech Support to get a replacement... ...And as I do not type too fast, I need more than only 1 hour and a half to compose the email... As for the second PSU, you are so right: wondering on this matter why Dell/Alienware do not offer, like some others do, when you initially buy your rig, to get a second PSU at half the price... Thing is that those bricks cost a freakin lot, we're talking $150 ~ $200, not exactly peanuts mind you, and on top, having two of them is much useful for at least three reasons: 1. If one dies, you have the other; 2. If you use your lappy in 2 different places in your house, you can leave each PSU at the right place, so you don't have to mess around to move it; 3. If you travel with your beast, you can still leave a PSU in your house, at the exact place where you use it the most, so no mess around neither... As a matter of fact, I do indeed have two PSU here; one delta and one flextronic. But I only use one at a time, and I appreciate both of them as I got one sitting (and waiting) at my desk, and I mess/move the other one around, because it likes it ! Cheers !

The "same motherboard" comment was by me based off the placeholder image on the CDN site. This was obviously a wrong image, as we know now. Seeing the bottom vents proves its a totally different motherboard layout and 32gb option means it has 4dimms . -Ash

E3 is a possibility though - note the fact they say "factory overclocked"... H67 is not the best platform for overclocking so it is quite possible this is a Z68 platform. That puts a release date around mid-late may, and its conceivable they would push it back one more month to get the perceived extra hype from E3. -Ash EDIT: On that note, if they do delay till E3, they will probably put in a 580m showing as well. We have a 555m so far... I'm willing to bet there is a 560/570/580m in the pipeline too. -Ash

That M18x blows away my expectations. I didn't expect it to be fully aluminum, props to Dell for that! The macro keys look quite interesting but I hope they don't get in the way of typing (by throwing keyboard alignment off). They claim the 18.4" is the best display of any Alienware, I'm assuming that's the R3 they are referring to so I hope it's brighter with a better color gamut. Fuck I'm excited and am ready to order as soon as my R3 sells!
