Akito Thunder3 - Pre-Orders

Recommended Posts

Good news! Looks like our favorite enclosure just announced the Thunderbolt3 edition.  See here https://www.akitio.com/expansion/thunder3-pcie-ssd

I noticed earlier that they the Thundbolt2 edition wasn't for sale on Amazon anymore via Prime. I have been watching the Akitio site for news of the 3 release and saw its out for pre-orders today! I don't see any pricing and it looks like you can't actually pre-order it just quite yet. Maybe you need to call a dealer for the order.

I think the Thunder3 hasn't been released yet.

This is the Thunder3 but packed with a 1.2TB Intel 750 Series PCIe Gen3 x4 SSD. With that SSD the price for the bundle will be around 800-1000$. Of cource you can sell the SSD ;)

From their FB page. The non ssd  will be released soon with the price around $299 but no confirm yet.

Hope anyone who buy this can test with eGPU and share with us. (It's time to buy new MacBook now.)

Why not just get a Razer Core? It's specifically designed for high end GPUs.

Because the Core costs 499.

299 sounds nice - but u need to wait for the Skylake MacBook Update anyways.

Do you guys think that we would be able to DIY eGPU with Thunderbolt 3 connection? The upcoming system like Razer blade core and Asus ROG xg2 just looks expensive (u can literally make a decent gaming pc for 500 dollar) beating one of the main reason we want to use eGPU. In theory, is it as simple as buying an adapter from thunderbolt 3 to hdmi? (to connect to exp gdc for example)

No. Thunderbolt needs hand-shaking parts on each side of the connection, unless you have those you're not going to build up a connection. Also HDMI wouldn't be able to provide the bandwidth TB3 delivers, not even fully TB2.

The only hope would be Bplus producing a cheap adapter but there's nothing known about such things.

  • 2 weeks later...

Judging from the relative size of the actual GPU this box is way to big to be an elegant solution compared to for example the razer core, powercolor eGPU or the gigabyte eGPU solution IMHO. All is good if the pricing is OK
