AW M14X R1 Overheating

Recommended Posts

So I pretty much overhauled my entire unit(removed battery, ram cover, and cleaned the GPU fan) and then after that my laptop started beeping 4 times. In response, I did the 60 seconds hold power button rule then it booted normally.

Only problem is, the bios was obviously reset, so it started behaving strangely(getting high temps).

Any bios versions you would recommend for me guys? And how do I bios upgrade it without using my battery?

According to the Alienware beep code table, 4 beeps would indicate that there was a memory (RAM) failure. Either reseat your memory sticks or test them individually. If it was actually 5 beeps then it'll be the CMOS battery. This is what causes the BIOS to reset as I'm assuming when you were cleaning your fan and taking the motherboard off the chassis, you had to disconnect the CMOS battery. This is what happened to me as well after cleaning out my fan. There's no need to reflash the BIOS if it was working fine for you before, although I would recommend having it up to date with the version AO8 from Dell Drivers. Unless you've got an SSD and want to use it at full SATA III speeds, you'd need the *AO8 BIOS mod with SATA III fix* made by svl7. Now then...as for your recurring high temperatures, I'm not too sure what to make of it. What are the temps that you're getting? After my cleaning, I'm having 45C on idle and 75C on load. Did you actually clean the grill for the heatsink and take apart the fan or did you just blow into the fan from below the chassis? That wouldn't help if your grill was initially filled with dust as they are trapped between the grill and the fan. You'll need to fully dissemble the laptop as I did with mine. If you've already done that then it's most likely that you need to do a thermal repaste to your CPU and GPU. This also requires you to dissemble your laptop right down to the heatsink.

Hi everyone, I have a problem. I need to unlock the bios settings because I only have basic functions and I need to increase the memory of VRam. Sorry if I posted a post not in this topic.

In this thread you can post your requests for Lenovo ThinkPad X240.
If someone wants upgrade Wi-Fi card and remove whitelist, or unlock hidden advanced menus and settings in bios setup menu, or upgrade to new display (with brightness control), then you can post your request in this thread.
      Important!
For creating your personal bios dump and to flash your bios mod, you must use any SPI programmer  (like CH341A programmer) and a SOIC8/SOP8 test clip!

Just dump your Bios using any SPI programmer  (like CH341A programmer) and a SOIC8/SOP8 test clip, then post it in this thread or upload it to any fileserver and send me the link.

Also, you can search on YouTube a lot of guide for CH341a.

I have spent a little time in the past few days looking around this site. I would love for someone to point me in the right direction to a forum that has information that could help me out with my problem.

      I have a:

      Alienware M17XR3
      Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
      Intel I7-2820QM 2.3
      Bios InsydeH20 Version 1.0 A12
      NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M
      (4x) 4 GB Ram
      samsung 2.5" 256 SSD (SATA3.0Gbps)

It has been an amazing machine for the last 10+ years. Minor issues, nothing that an Alien Respawn could not fix, till now! On battery power it works just perfect.  Then I plug it in and it's all OK until I try to do anything, and then the screen goes white. The screen sometimes goes yellow, sometimes blue, but mostly white screen. It will do nothing until I do a hard reset (holding the power button till it turns off and turn it back on) with the power unplugged.  If the power is not unplugged then it will go through boot up to windows swirling dots then go white again. If I plug it in and do nothing I can charge it, unplug and continue what i was doing. I have tried a lot of solutions bouncing around the internet, and thought I was having a DC Jack connection issue (replaced the ac/dc power adapter, then the motherboard). I get a better connection now but with the same white screen result. I stumbled into this forum and I'm hoping to find solutions to my issues.  Then upgrade like so many others have.

Any ideas, comments or suggestions welcome.

      Thank you in advance!

Hello to all big format laptop users!
I`ll try to make it as short as possible. I have the Alienware M18X R1 for about 7years, i think. It was a problematic machine all the time. But during warranty period local support fixed everything super fast and free of charge :). I even upgraded from gtx 580m sli to gtc 780m sli. And made primary hdd samsung evo ssd. Unlocked Bios. Power brick i changed 3 times by now. Battery once. And 6moths ago one of the long time ago installed 780m died ( started with artifacts on screen then refused to boot windows). Replaced that and was as happy as ever. The machine kept working stable and i pushed all i could get from it in reasonably modern titles. Even tried RDR2 on default settings, gave me 17fps :). Not sure if SLI is supported for that game. The point is it was running fine for last 6 months.
What happened:  Gaming as usual, room temp 23C. After around 2hr suddenly black screen. The laptop switched off by itself.
What i check: First checked power brick. Green light off. Unplug from wall and laptop. After plugging in wall green light back on. Connect laptop light off.
Next: Tried take out battery, unplug. And hold the PWR button for 1 min. Try to start on battery - nothing. Plug in - green light off again.
Later: after some googling found that need to try to remove video cards. Done that. OK Nice! Plug in power and it starts as nothing happened on the integrated intel video.
Found out that i one of the video cards is plugged in that triggers the power brick to trip. (the original upgrade 780m from years ago).
Start with GPU: Insert the other one in its slot. Systems start. But immediately i notice there`s no video drivers. OK i think reinstalling and job done. Drivers reinstalled, asked for restart. After restart nothing. Still no driver.
Windows device manager: This is bogging me. it shows that i have 670M instead of 780m. Windows gives Code 43 Error.
BIOS: I go into bios just to find that that it has reverted back to A05 (hows that possible?). And its so limited that i cant even choose witch video card to use. But it detects nVidia GFX.
How to get at least my single 780M to be working?! Update bios again to unlocked? Did this event fry Vbios on my other card maybe?
      System: m18x R1
      SLI gtx 780m
      Unlocked bios (before event)
      nvidia driver 443.x(or there about)
      Win: 7, 64bit

      Hello there!
I am new on the forum. I'd need some help. I own a lenovo ideacentre t540-icb g, and i would need to unlock all the options in my bios, especially overclocking and thermal configuration. I tried with both amibcp and mmtool, but i didn't succeed (Error 18).
I wonder if you could help me or give me some advice.
      Thanks in advance.
