Upgrade P770DM to GTX980!(it's also compatible with P570WM and 16L1)

Recommended Posts

As we know,GTX980 is used on CLEVO's P870DM(-G) and P775MD1(-G) with 220W tdp and 180W TDP,respectively.Meanwhile, both of them are designed with a power supply port for GTX980.So they might need some extra juice through the power connector.Unfortunately,we can't find a power supply port likes that on other models such as P770DM.

Is it possible for a GTX980 to work on those model without the extra power connector? The answer is affirmative.
YES!GTX980(180W TDP edition) is completely compatible with P770DM!

As we can see,the GTX980 is completely recognised in the BIOS.3Dmark score is a little bit low.Perhaps because of insufficient power supply.But it's ok.the real problem may be with the heatsink.it's to the card, but might not strong enough.

it also can be used on MSI's 16L1.

Sadly,GTX980 is temporarily unable to work on the P7XXZM series.

Im still hoping for a P7xxZM hack/mod. I am disappointed that the p7xxZM was supposed to be upgradeable but turns out is not. I got mine about a month before the DM released.

Looks like someone wants to sell more of those cards... :P None of those systems would be able to cool (and fuel) the cards properly in a RL scenario, except for the P570WM and it sadly can't fit a second 980 for SLI unless heavily modded with a Dremel...

I have the P570WM with duel 330W power supply, I like to give it a try, how can I get the cards? and can I use the same old heat sinks and the SLI cable for the GTX 780m's

Because of their additional length an width.P570WM can not directly support GTX980 SLI. MSI version of GTX980 can be used in the slave MXM slot but not the master slot because of the power supply cable for fan.By contrast,CLEVO version of GTX980 can be used in the master MXM slot but not the slave slot because of the PCH heatsink.Just like Prema said,if you want to have a second 980 for SLI,you might need a  modification with a Dremel. For how to get the card,i think we can only get it by removing it from P775DM1 or GT80S for the moment. But maybe you can find it on the Ebay after a while.i dont think the price will be low.At least $1000 i guess.:pirate:

From what I see in P570WM technically is possible only a tandem of Clevo GTX980 (Master) + MSI GTX980 (Slave). :) The question is whether it will work together BIOS / VBIOS/VBIOS?

In P570WM the 130W MSI card hitting the FAN connector is not the problem, but it's L-shape, which prevents any second card from being used, makes it a no go.

The 180W Clevo card is too long and hits the frame ( @Mr. Fox may want to share some insight). ;)

Dremeling the frame apart may cause some static instability...apart from that using a 180W Clevo as Master and 130W MSI as Slave would be the only option. I could make their vBIOS work together, that's not the problem...

Ideal solution would be to take two of those MXM 3.0b M5500, solder additional MOSFETs and add an SLI connector, then put a cross-flash-modded 980 SLI vBIOS on them. But that's for people with a lot of 'play-money' to blow:

How does 2x 980 180w clevo sli cards will go in p870dm-g. Phisicaly can fit, got the power conectors on the mobo, maybe some copper plates soldered on the existing sinks to acomodate the lenght of the cards and cool the extra mosfets on the back, and an extra 330w power supply of course?

      Hello,

i recently bought a x7200 with one gtx 680m in it. now im planning to upgrade to sli with an other gtx680m.
but i can't find a heatsink with fan.
so the question is: does the p570wm GPU heatsink fit into the x7200? they look very similar. or does someone sell parts of a x7200?

      thanks in advance

      Hi Prema and techs,

i have a P570WM with 120hz LCD.but there is not an internal 3D emitter in the model. And the motherboard is V2.3A.
When i flashed WM3 BIOS,I can use 3D VISION with USB 3D emitter and 3D glasses. But i can't adjust the brightness.(the brightness can be adjust with WM BIOS.)
When i enter the BIOS Setup interface,i can adjust the brightness. But when i enter the windows,i can't do it anymore.

I found that the 3D model with V2.2A motherboard and internal 3D emitter can adjust the brightness in WM3 BIOS.So what caused this difference?motherboard?LCD panel?OR internal 3D emitter?

How can i make brightnesscontrol work with WM3 BIOS?or can i do something to  convert it to a 3D mode?

      thanks for your help.
