Connection for desktop and laptop

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

First time poster, sorry if I muck up...

I am currently running an old HP DL160 G6 server with a GTX 960. As it is a 1U rackmount case (proprietary board layout, fans, etc...) and the GTX 960 is double width, I've been running it with the case open on a PCIe x16 extension ribbon cable, but was planning to make something a bit prettier. However due to fate and circumstance, yesterday I received a lovely Thinkpad x201, which led me to this bright idea:

Is there a way to have the GPU sit in an enclosure, which can be linked either to a laptop via express card, or to a desktop via a x16 PCIe card, without sacrificing bandwidth on the desktop connection. I know about the commercial backplane solutions ($1000+), but unfortunately have a shoestring budget.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

  Thanks,
