And here I thought we're going to have to some real laptop pron. But fear not my comrades!

Here's the upgrade I did on my previous Thinkpad X200 from the stock LCD with LED backlighting to the AFFS FlexView screen with CCFL, and comparison to RGB LED on M17x:

Hah yeah ... I ended up returning the screen anyway due to dead pixels, pretty significant background light leaks, inability to calibrate the screen properly without an actual calibrator and the fact that battery life dropped by 30-40%. Later on I sold the laptop to a friend of mine and got X200t.

The new X220 has an IPS screen so I am curious how would that stand vs RGB LED, but just due to the bugs alone (light bleed, burn in, low brightness) I doubt it would be better. Also the horizontal viewing angles on RGB LED are pretty good, its just the vertical ones aren't as good, but its still a TN screen.

Here's my Lenovo Y500 purchased in December 2012. I have grown fond of this laptop and is quite impressed with it's gaming capability. It was not perfect though, the touchpad and keyboard had issues that would cause it to become unusable. I do not recommend buying this laptop until they fix this issue, if you guys are interested in this laptop, stop by the Lenovo support forums and wait until you see that the issue has been fixed. They've since replaced the Elan touchpad by one made by Synaptics but even some of the Synaptics touchpads are exhibiting some issues. Anyway, hopefully I've posted enough to have the rights to post pictures!

Ooooh... look at that sexy blue PCB and those two drive bays... but I'm not sure about the red outlines on the keyboards. I guess I much more prefer the "spartan" Thinkpad looks than the "sylish" Ideapad. :)

Btw, M17x-R2 had (has?) touchpad problem too (the problem being the touchpad is shit). But I guess its not as bad if you use the external mouse often.

Haha, the blue PCB does look pretty sexy ;) I have not had success with capturing how the keyboard actually look.

Tests have shown otherwise, if you get one where Lenovo applied thermal paste correctly (hit or miss as i've read) temps are

around 40ish idle 75 max underload.

+1, Exactly, I had one of the ones where Lenovo did apply the thermal paste correctly and I was maxing out 3DMark11 demo at 64C (maxing out meaning running it for 5 hours straight even though the temperature plateau'd at around 30 mins. I have since done something that I'm still regretting, I pulled it off and reapplied cheap ass thermal paste, but I laid it on there beautifully, any nerd would be proud, thinking that it would improve the caked on Lenovo stuff. Temperatures increased 10C, and so I said to myself, well that was stupid. So I purchased some AS5 and after resetting the heatsink probably close to 20 times now, I am still not at the same temperatures while it was stock!!! Talk about fail. But still decent, I max out Furmark at ~87C running the 15min burn-in 1080p benchmark. CPU temps are good to go, just the GPU I think there is a setting issue because one of the screws actually bends the motherboard when tightened but I have loosened it before so the motherboard is flat and the temps actually got worse. It's a real head scratcher... Don't mess with the heatsink if you are seeing good temps!!!

Edit: Forgot to mention, this is with the GPU overclocked to 1155 core and memory overclocked to 2555. Stock settings, it runs very cool.

I think you often need to wait some time for the paste to "set in", I'd think its performance should reach the plateau after few days, but most likely not immediately. I don't have that much experience with different compounds but roughly speaking I think it's good to give it some time.

All depends on the exact thermal paste you used, for instance Arctic Silver 5 has a burn-in period of 200 hours. It is extremely picky on how it is applied and requires you to purify both surfaces before you pretreat them then apply the thinnest layer on the cpu that is able to cover the whole area. But if all criteria are met you get absolutely wonderful results an example my desktop is fully burned in and gets temps 20c-50c at room temp running 4.5Ghz.
