godfafa
After tweaking my OC setting in m17x R5 (=alienware 17 R1), I've acheived some nice CPU scores. XTU 1096 godfafa`s XTU score: 1096 marks with a Core i7 4900MQ 3dmark11 physics 11879 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-4900MQ,Alienware 041W46 3dmark11 performace 9657 (single 780m) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-4900MQ,Alienware 041W46 -no ext cooling, just used a coolfeet to elevate the rear bottom -highest temps during XTU and 3dmark11 for CPU were 93 and 83, respectively -can't OC GPU enough when CPU is OCed over 4.3 Baby 17 does well as her big sister 18.
mw86
Congrats Godfafa great scores indeed. Cheers looking good there wow bro we got nearly same XTU score awesome. 1097 XTU marks http://hwbot.org/submission/2638455_ used 4368mhz on my 4940mx
Guest
Well, would you look at that... it looks like the trusty old M18xR1 with no lid on power handling is going to beat the Alienware 18 in 3DMark11 without even trying that hard. Both running a single 330W AC adapter. Compare: M18xR1, 2920XM @ 4.3GHz, 780M SLI @ 1033/1500 vs Alienware 18, 4930MX @ 4.5GHz. 780M SLI @ 1111/1500
Founder Brian Posted January 5, 2015 Founder Share Posted January 5, 2015 Are you able to run the 980M's in the R1 as well?
johnksss
That's a big 10/4 NO!
Guest
Are you able to run the 980M's in the R1 as well? That's a big 10/4 NO! It definitely will not work in SLI due to the need for pure UEFI boot, which the R1 does not have. It gets 8 beeps just like the R2 does with two in SLI. I did not attempt one GPU since I don't care for single-GPU machines much at all. But, I am going to test just one and I think it may work in SG mode with Legacy BIOS since it does in the M17xR4 and M18xR2. If it does, that would be a way for M18xR1 owners to get almost 780M SLI performance for about have the cost of two 780M cards and a single 330W AC adapter will do just fine with it for some heavy overclocking. Hopefully, that will work. I am going to need to repaste with Liquid Ultra or move to the AC cooler. I was out of it and have IC Diamond on the 2920XM CPU right now. At 4.5GHz it hit 100°C and throttles too much without AC or Liquid Ultra (as expected). At 4.5GHz and 780M SLI clocked at 1125/1500/1.150V the M18xR1 pulled 621W on my UPS meter in 3DMark11 Test 1, LOL. Hopefully, this will hold me over until I can get 980M SLI to work consistently well or find a great bargain on a P570WM3 to move them to. Hopefully, @svl7 and @Prema will be able to figure it out how to fix that random GPU throttling nonsense, but that remains to be seen. I'm not sure that similar problem ever got fixed with 880M, but I am trying to remain positive. Here is what my new dual 330W Adapter box looks like. The guts are the same, but I used a heavy cast aluminum box to absorb heat instead of a heat sink on a plastic box like the last two revisions. I added nice rubber feet to keep it from sliding around. Edit: Tested it a couple of months ago, but forgot to come back and mention that the M18xR1 won't run with a single 980M in SG/Optimus mode either... goes into an endless reboot loop just as the Alien head BIOS logo screen appears, with no ability to access the BIOS. Guest
I'd say this slight variance is within the margin of error... Both machines running @ 4.5GHz CPU OC; 1110/1500/1.100V GPU OC. That AW18 benchmark was run with AC cooling. Just ran the R1 benchmark with nothing but fans and max core temp was 78°C. 3DMark11: Mr. Fox - Alienware M18xR1 | 2920XM | 780M SLI -vs- Mr. Fox - Alienware 18 | 4930MX | 780M SLI No need to buy an Alienware 18 if you already have an M18xR1... MavUK666
Not a great score compared to a lot of the ones I've seen, was on just over 2300 stock.... IS the QM chip dragging it down more than the GPU?
MavUK666
I must be doing something wrong... PCmark is a lowly 3176, but when I compare it to other systems with the same CPU & GPU, and a very similar setup of memory & SSD drive, they're up in the 5000's!! Anyone any ideas
