Appreciate it man, also I was wondering can we increase performance via those TDP limits settings under turbo boost multiplier in the bios, they are editable for me (I also have the 2720qm)?

Posted by StamatisX

Yes you can, haven't tested it yet but it should increase the performance, don't see why not

Posted by littleone562

Cool ill try it out, also pretty funny how many times i press the tactx top macro key instead of escape :P

Posted by StamatisX

Indeed that happened to Brian like 4-5 times already

Posted by mw86

Lol I want to make that mistake too. No that sounds great fresh windows install for Brian.... cool. I want to hear about his experience with the hyperX! How are they running? I was happy to see 6.5K score on 3Dmark2011 after a basic overclock. Inap has his at 107 base-clock hoping to hear it likes that number too!

Posted by littleone562

one more thing i am wondering is, should i leave the setting for "short duration PWR limit" enabled or disabled? Other than that, i maxxed out the other tdp/tdw settings.

DaneGRClose said in the /alienware-m17x/142-m17x-r3-benchmarking-11.html
Thanks guys, my BCLK was at 105.9 with GPU at 845/1200 for the 3Dmark11 run. On 3dmark06 I was at 106.2 bclk and 830/1200 gpu. I'm still trying to get everything dialed in and waiting on my hyperx as I think my ram is holding me back on my bclk.

Also Arklight posted this video in the M14x thread... it should prove useful for that adjustment littlone562

Posted by littleone562

I wonder if what he is saying is legit in that video that, the first setting has to be 55 and the other 56, mine can go higher. Any thoughts on this?

Posted by mw86

Don't know I have only used an M17x R2 and the Bios works differently including one is Sandybridge and I've only used 1st generation I7 processor. Hopefully anyone here with Sandybridge can assist you!

Sandy Bridge (overclocking) capabilities:

The Short Duration Power Limit (PL2) defines the maximum power the platform can handle (AC brick, battery or PSU limitations), so it depends on particular design.

If power exceeds PL2 during a 1 ms sampling interval:

- Turbo frequency is reduced one bin

– Frequency will increase again during the next 1 ms interval if the power is below PL2

The Long Duration Power Limit (PL1) allows the CPU to go above TDP up-to the defined power/time.

Default recommendation is to set PL2 = 1.25x TDP

The CPU might have limits defined for PL1/2 power and time, also the platform manufacturer can define them based on limits of particular design.

Availability of the Power Limit override is determined by the "Programmabe TDC/TDP Limits for Turbo Mode" setting.

EDIT:

Moreover, certain SNB CPUs (mostly XE) support additional knobs for overclocking:

- Programmabe Ratio Limits for Turbo Mode: allows to change the maximum clock ratio when CPU is in Turbo Mode (depends on number of cores in Turbo mode)

- Number of Overclocking Bins Supported

- Overclocking Extra Voltage: allows to specify a voltage that is applied as an offset to current VID (excellent feature for overclocking)

You can determine all the limits and actual parameters supported/configured on CPU using HWiNFO32.

hey Brian can you elaborate a little on what settings you used besides the video card OC, like tdp/bclk if you edited any for the benches?

When you have the ssd and RAM installed and get the time could you please run wprime 32m, pcmark 7 and cinebench 11.5 (cpu and gpu), those are the other ones I'm most familiar with

With the hyperx running xmp 2 (xmp 1 wouldn't boot) and bclk at 100 mhz + ssd, it's flying! The system boots in about 16 seconds and the 11.5 catalysts have raised the scores considerably over the stock dell driver. Unfortunately, we have run into a problem. If we choose to push out the review quickly, we have to down grade to the 11.4 Catalyst driver because that is what M17x-R3 was tested with. If not, then we have to re-do the M17x-R3 benchmarks using Michael's system but then all 3 systems would have results with Catalysts 11.5. I guess I'll put up a poll to see which you guys want.

Sure no problem.

I used 100 mhz bclk, maxed out both power limits, kept short pwr limit enabled and set memory xmp profile 2.

Awesome vantage runs Brian! You have brought me over here from NBR. My old desktop with a QX9650 and GTX280 was scoring 14k in 3dmark vantage so seeing those laptop scores makes me even more giddy while I await my M18x!!! lol

Brian does BCLK have some negative affects if you OC it, because with the old gen i7, it sometimes limited the turbo if you oc'ed the bclk. One way to check is if you get stuttering in game, sometimes benchmarks will still give better scores but games will be SLIGHTLY stuttery with an oc'ed bclk.

Posted by Brian K.

I haven't tested for that yet, try it and let me know. I might not have time today.

Posted by littleone562

Brian I put in my SSD installing it is such a pain because of the stupid HD strip cable lol, wish they made that part easier with a solid connecting cable rather than an unprotected ribbon. Also Brian 2 questions:

1. For the OC, did you disable ULPS via trixx setting

2. Did you try the BCLK bios OC yet, how much do you think that will help

Posted by StamatisX

Yeah that cable is a PITA...

1)Yes he did

2)he set it to 100

Posted by littleone562

Thanks stam.

How does the screen compare to the R2 screen? I'm not sure I'd like the 1080 resolution as much. Maybe for movies, but thats about it. How do you feel about it?

Also, is throttle stop of any use? And is the CPU top mounted or bottom mounted? Tryin g to get an idea of how the 2920xm compares to the 920xm. As far as CPU OCing, is there a differance betweent he factory OCed CPU to 4GHz, and the 3.5GHz 2920xm? Or is it just a way for them to sqeeze more money out? Never saw why somone would pay when they can simply OC it themselves.

The screen is decent, it's no RGB LED but to my eyes it looks good, especially after calibration. The drop in resolution to 1080 doesn't bother me to be honest and on an 18.4" display, you actually see more in a movie than you would a 16:10 since there are no black bars cutting the picture off.

The CPU is top mounted and inside the shell like the R2 along with both GPU's. I can't answer the CPU Oc'ing question since I ordered the 2720qm and not 2920xm. However, from what I saw on NBR, someone posted a screenshot with throttlestop and the 2920xm is locked.

Thanks and cheers.

Temps before repasting GPU 1 and 2 with furmark are approximately:

GPU 1: 84/86/85

GPU 2: 93/92/91

After repasting GPU 1 has dropped down to the 70s with the shaders in low 80s while GPU 2 is in the mid 80s to low 90s. I am having issue with temps on GPU 2 so until I get confirmation that it's a design issue or system flaw, I'll have to put testing for the review on temporary hold.

They are really messing things up and it just was released! This really is getting to be a constant pattern with Dell.

Like littleone said, the newest version has a disable ulps box so registry hacking or changing the inf is no longer needed to make overclocking work. You can get the latest Trixx from here: Sapphire Technology - TriXX Tweak Utility

Hi there Brian,

Congrats on the M18x Purchase. Top notch!

I was just wondering does the TRIXX program also work for 5870s in the R2?

Cheers.

1 run of vantage, and ill take it out, than do another run with 3dmark11. ill prob start a little higher than your OC scores. i dont want to do to many runs but at least at those temps most moisture gets stuck to the evaperator coils.

anyone ever try super low atmospheric temp overclocking, as opposed to active cooling? never tried it myself but worth a shot i guess. will have someone take a pic with my eskimo freezer suit on lol

eJustice- Just wondering if you have though of the safest way to do your "deep freeze" benching? I have never tried it but i was wondering if you should bring it into the freezer cold, do all your benches, then let it cool in the freezer before bringing it out. It would be a real tragety if ice formed and resulted in a short. Found this thread discussing this idea. Good luck

Let us know how your research reveals. If it can be done safely, you should have some impressive numbers. Plus, the eskimo pics will be cool....no pun intended

Posted by daveh98

Justice are you running 11.6 drivers and have you unticked all "quality" options in the AMD suite? I unticked the "surface optimizations" and my score was 6800 with all stock clocks. We have identical specs 2720 and CF 6970. For benching, those optimizations really slow down the system.

Thank you, it was important to all of us so I could see no other course of action than this.

Thanks Stam, I got better scores the higher my baseclock but dont have my Hyperx in yet or vertex 3. Once i hone in on a higher baseclock the 1/2 core could be close to 4.7/4.8. The maxx multiplier is apparently 45... so 110 max baseclock would give you 4950mhz but since 110 would crash the other clocks tied to the baseclock I'll have to see the highest im stable. 107 didn't work 105 worked sometimes but had periodic lockups. i was excited at 4.53 ghz 1 core 1 or 2 thread and yes even under the full run of 1024m on 8 thread I was amazed given the proper settings in the bios how much speed it maintained. Besides this room im using it in is baking hot from the hot day we just had.

Plus the other ram may allow my baseclock to go higher... its probably the stock ram given me trouble.

My latest runs with WPRIME

post-34-14494988540758_thumb.png

Beat the previous 1024M score in wprime again

*My first benches a post or two back are utilizing Turbo Flex Voltage ID of preset 25 of 25 which is the highest added voltage you can set. These new wprime scores where achieved with the settings shown above. The system is 100% stable with the 25 Flex VID but for purposes of running cooler and undervolting I tried less than 9 and it would not boot the OS. 9 allowed the OS to boot and finish wprime 1024M but while running a WEI assessment if crashed. I've since gone to 10 Flex VID and now 11 after a random crash while surfing. I'll keep reporting what I end up leaving it at, perhaps this can provide some with the es or qs versions of the 2920XM a starting point.

That 32m score is only ~1.3 seconds off my 2600k @ 5.3ghz!!! VERY nice!

Posted by StamatisX

Amazing how it can go all the way up to 4.6Ghz...

Posted by svl7

2920xm continues to impress...

All those overclocking options in the BIOS... really great work by Dell imo, now they should do the same for the M17x r3 as well, and also provide a tool for changing certain values from withing Windows, that would be neat.

Posted by DR650SE

Ill give you a goal. Beat 192sec in wprime 1024 8 thread. Should be very doable. Thats the best i managed on a 920xm. The 2920xm is quiet impressive on that you can keep it at those settings all day. Nice runs btw. Looking forward to your benching results!

@DR650SE 192... damn this dice... LOL

I also believe this is doable since mw86 is still on stock thermal paste and probably doesn't even use any external cooling

that is correct no ac very humid and 84ambient temp in this room now

Posted by StamatisX

All you need is an AC to blow cold air under your laptop, no DICE necessary, now if you plan to go even lower then you will probably need more extreme solutions

Posted by mw86

Latest clock I am fully stable but went back to max Voltage ID. Tonight I'll see about undervolting again. After having my baseclock throw me off and made me think other factors were the prob I decided to Test for stability all night. If I leave my overclock as is, and just decrease my Flex VID I can have same speeds with sightly less heat therefore higher speeds maintained longer. I'll definitely be gunning for that 192 sec 1024M wprime for sure not yet though. I'll be posting a small hint guide on little things I noticed that could be easier for the next person if they knew ahead of time. Here is what I am stable in so far.

Intel Burn Test v2.50 by Agent GOD 1 run each setting, Stress Level: Very High (4096MB Ram) over 1,2,3,4,6,8 Threads

Prime95 64bit V26.6 Build 3 using options menu > Benchmark (stresses each type of multi thread scenario...)

Xtreme CPU Benchmark Version 1B by Agent GOD in Dual and Single Core

WPrime V1.55 @ 8Thread on 1024M and 32M + 7,6,5,4,3,2,1 Threads @ 1024M

Windows Experience Index Hardware Assesment

attached is the Xtreme CPU Benchmark by Agent GOD (1 core or 2 core use only)

****104.4 baseclock seems to work perfect for me... funny that I have to set 104.56 in bios to have windows detect 104.4

@StamatisX , @DR650SE I agree Stam damn DR650SE's dice too lol! I just might chase a local truck down lol!

What do you guys think? Still have to do a clean install with latest drivers and add dual Vertex 3 in.

- also I noticed Intel Burn to be the strongest benchmark @ 8 thread 4096mb ram at almost complete and getting over heated it was running down to 3.4Ghz and at a point or two in my all night run that same bench was the only to throttle my cpu bringing it to it 2.5ghz range... some IC Diamond should clear that up. Though I only did the Bench in Prime 95, I think if I ran small FFT ran the same length as Intel Burn did... it would have had a similar effect.

45 is the maximum possible multi setting for the 2920xm in the BIOS, right? I don't think that this is locked in the chip itself, it's probably only a BIOS lock, would be fun to see what the actual limits of this CPU are... maybe there'll be an unlocked BIOS sometime in the future.

Posted by mw86

That would be great. If the baseclock tied to so many clocks I could try 5ghz with 110 baseclock with the 45 multi. Also the baseclock max is 111. Yeah if I had a 50 multi I could probably get 4.9 to 5 GHz for sure... The CPU hasn't shown me a limit since the only thing that ever gave me error is raising the baseclock so high. I'd love to have a hacked bios even if that was the sole and only purpose for it. I wish I knew all that stuff id spend a lot of sleepless nights working on it. Those guys that did r2 bios a10 unlocked did a good job... Should I ask them?

Posted by svl7

Haven't seen a thread there so far, so I'd definitely post a request on BIOS-mods if I were you. Who's the BIOS manufacturer? Phoenix? Award?

Where can i post a request for a custom bios all I want is the 50 max turbo multipliers unlocked and I'd be in heaven.

No not yet but now that Debaucher posted those nice pics and guide to open it up I am planning on it. Should be in a few days then I'll post the before and after temps over in the IC Diamond thread. Can't wait I think I could see 195 seconds Wprime 1024M when I repaste and the gpus will probably see a huge difference, i plan to replace the pads with the IC Diamond like in your R2 in your awesome IC Diamond review. As it is I can see 4.2 4.1 GHz peak in quad core for split seconds on really easy loads... and can sit around 3.8 quad core to 3.5 and im hoping that the ic diamond will keep it above 3.6. I'll be going for 8K 3dmark 2011. My cpu score on a bench was 8900 im waiting for the repaste to really push it... but like I wrote above running 4.5 Ghz max on all cores with no voltage added and stock baseclock seems like a tank and crash proof. I'll take anyones suggestions at trying to get a crash to happen... it'll be fun. It seems to have a very nice turbo programming since it seems to just slow itself down to within limits automatically.

Posted by StamatisX

2920XM is a beast... can't wait for your repasted results...

Posted by mw86

@StamatisX I'm interested to see how close those ES samples come to the results above... @Aikimox try your Wprime 32M with a Flex of 0 and whatever you want the multipliers at. I'm wondering if you can reach the 3.8-3.7ghz quad core you were hoping for by using the voltage drop... since it will produce less heat. Also interesting to know if that sample is stable with those same settings.

Posted by Jimbo

Oh yeah, +rep for sure. If I can't get the ES to perform, there should be new CPU options launching soon.

Posted by Aikimox

Tried Flex 0 and all mutli's@34 - it was stuck at 3.2GHz.

I don't have time for more testing right now but will try again tomorrow and see I if it can go higher.

Also, is there a way to force the multipliers from the OS?

Throttle Stop won't control much I think I got it to lower the multipliers from bios settings but not raise them above. I know that doesn't help. I wish it would I don't understand why multipliers won't go higher for you, what are temps like during your testing?

I can set all multipliers to 45 and everything else on max. The idle temps are fine, Prime95 will shoot into 90c after 1-2min but that's probably ok given 27C room, no elevation and no cooler pad. During Wprime32M run the temps never reach 80C but the speed is stuck @3.7 . If I set the multi's to 40 - 3.6GHz. Only at 34 the speed is 3.4GHz during tests.

mw86: Your thorough post is why I like being a part of Tech | Inferno. I finally found the +rep button!

Maybe someday I'll be able to figure out how to get the Sandy Bridge multipliers to go higher in ThrottleStop. Someone at Intel is in charge of hiding the good stuff in their public documentation, almost like they were trying to protect some classified military secrets.

There are a few registers I'm curious about so I'll send you a PM someday to see if you can do some testing for me but I am thinking that with Sandy Bridge, increasing the turbo multiplier is only going to be possible in the bios. Dell probably disables the ability to adjust this so software like ThrottleStop is out of luck.

Posted by Aikimox

I see...In that case there's not much to do. Either the ES I have is limited @3.7GHz or the AW BIOS settings are not applied correctly.

Posted by mw86

@Aikimox can you attach a log file from throttle stop through a wprime 1024m run, with more data checked? Perhaps we can see what happens when the load starts and as temps rise on your sample. My chip slows down to that or lower on the test but starts higher. Thanks a lot @unclewebb that means a lot to me coming from you, your program is amazing.

On a side note I noticed interesting behavior in Intel Burn since it has uber stress loads... once the cpu gets to its short term limit and switches from 99 watt to 80 watt (which I've seen peaks of 106watts and also 87watts) the speed drops to 3.35-3.4GHz under extreme 8 thread intel burn stress and as less stress is placed upon cpu the 80~watts can even juice the cpu in 8 thread as high as 3.8GHz~ still at the 80~watts when there is less stress. To me this is news since 80 watts can juice 8thread from 3.35Ghz~ to 3.8GHz~. Would you agree that's a feat for a cpu to handle that much and run those speeds with only 80~watts?

True, I've just seen a nice vantage run of johnksss with a seet 6990m OC, and the difference between CPU and GPU was more than 6600... (CPU was 2630QM).

I wish I had a 6990m xfire. I'd love to sell my two 6970m and buy the dual 6990m. Also may list my 2920xm when 2960xm comes out in the marketplace here. For now I'm enjoying the 2920 a lot.

@mw86 , yeah I would hold to that 2920XM cause the ES samples this time are not the same....

@svl7 I know I saw that and maybe in games it may go unnoticed but in benchmarks the gap was huge...

what I don't like so far is the limited voltage both nVidia and AMD offer for their GPUs...

post-34-14494988549358_thumb.png

Posted by StamatisX

Damn! look at the graphics score, very nice! You realize that with a 2920XM you would be exceeding 8K total score by a lot...

Posted by Jimbo

Thanks stam, I have an ES version waiting for the twin pipe heatsink from dell to do a teardown, repaste everything with ICD24, put my SSD and extra RAM in etc. What do you think I'll gain?

Questions, most of which I have seen discussed elsewhere and now can't find.

Is it possible to force the fans to 100% for the purposes of benchmarking? If so how? I tried using HWinfo and my system threw a BSOD not long afterwards, I think I actually disabled the fans (as when I rebooted they came on at max).

Since I installed the 11.8 drivers I have no brightness control, is that the purpose of the modded .inf I see people talking about? This is my first experience with laptops AND with AMD, still learning.

Posted by StamatisX

If you are lucky with the ES sample you will hit 8K+ even if it is not a golden sample, plus the twin pipe heatsink and ICD24 will keep it cold enough for some nice benchmarks, so I expect anything above 8.3K for Mark11 and 24K+ for Vantage

About the 11.8 since they are preview drivers there might be a few bugs, I am not sure. I have the 11.7 and brightness seems to work just fine, but again yours is the M18x...

Posted by Jimbo

Thanks Stam. 8.3K/24K would make me very happy. A guy on a desktop forum I spend some time on got 8462 with two 6990 DESKTOP cards. I want to make him cry like a little girl when a laptop beats him.

EDIT: And no, I've no idea why his score is so low. Should be 14k+

Posted by StamatisX

I bet that guy left CCC settings to default, that's why

Congrats Jimbo those are amazing graphics numbers... also I have been using 11.8 preview and hope the actual release comes out soon since I have the same issue. In the thread about 11.8 and 11.7 drivers it is mentioned the preview drivers are patched desktop drivers... hence the brightness function doesn't even exist.

*Aikimox and you Jimbo, whoever feels like testing some settings on the ES i have discovered more intricacies about the 2920XM and will have valuable tips to boost the max operating speeds not to be confused with max speed turbo limits. I'll be correcting and updating that guide I wrote trimming adding etc. and when done i'll point out what to try to see how high speeds the es can actually get...

OK guys! There you go:

How to submit your scores

1. Make a post in this thread that will contain a screenshot, provide a link or your results if it is a 3DMark Vantage/11/06 run and post anything else you feel like mentioning for that particular run, i.e ambient temperatures, cooling method, etc...

2. Go to Forms and locate your laptop and then click on the benchmark you want to submit your results

3. Complete the form. The last question of the form will ask you to submit the link of either your post or the link of the screenshot you took (i.e [ URL]M17x-R2 benchmarking )

Note: You must type those tags (don't copy-paste them from this post, must be in capital letters, no spaces,) like the example above in order for the link to be clickable. In case you want to edit or delete your submission or need assistance on how to submit your score check the guide here

Posted by mw86

that won't be my best run on 1024, but thanks guys for the compliments. That was with a base clock slightly over my 24/7/365 settings... See signature. I plan to do a run tonight at the specs in my sig. 104.8@41/42/43/44 97amp 99 watt short limit for 56 seconds and 80 watts long term limit will be my full bench settings. I think I'll land between your dice score SVL7 and DR650SE's. This has been awesome, I have a bit to add to my guide and correct. The fastest benches on stock cooling with or without a notebook cooler and no dice, will be on a 1.3511 volt max or rather 0 turbo flex VID. This will IMO be true for my 2920xm qs and the es versions floating around out there. I'd love to see Aikimox or Jimbo plug those settings in and see what they do. I use Intel Processor Identification Utility to show my 4 core turbo max and right now in that program it displays 4.15 quadcore,(got it to 4.32 once but that's only on benching settings. The 24/7/365 settings in my signature will be my gaming settings. ICD 24 does wonders biggest temp decrease was on video card ram. Aikimox showed us some benches but if the ES or QS are going to see high quadcore speeds then 0 flex is important and realizing certain tests push the cpu harder so you won't see the highest capable speeds so to check quadcore peak turbo speeds use Intel Processor Identification Utility on Intels site under downloads section. Around 4.4ghz dual core you need about 3flex, at 5.5ghz single core I needed 8 flex to survive Intel Burn Test on very high (4096mb ram) in my recent findings so that should give idea of what voltage is needed. Therefore without a doubt dell's 3 preset overclocks have the voltage to high and since preset 3 has its highest speed set to 4.2GHz single core 0 flex should be required where 25 is set which means if you use the 25 the average speed your cpu runs at could drop as much as 500mhz or more on various cores. Heed my advice 0 flex will allow overclock 3 preset to really operate at those speeds, at least with the 99watt short term and 80 watt long term.

M18x Overclocking 2920XM Turbo Flex 0-25 (Voltage)

Described as 1/256 of a volt added to turbo voltage VID

*!Notice!* I have noticed any flex over 0 increases not only the max turbo vid over stock but the operating vid given the same speed of a 0 flex vid will be also 1/256 volts higher. It would look as follows: 0 Flex = 1.3511 Max VID and lets just say 2.5GHz has the cpu parked at 1.22 volts(just as example) up from the minimum around .77 volts for 800Mhz... when you set 2 flex the VID max would be 1.35896875 and at per say 2.5GHz again if you had 1.22 volts before it would now be running at (2 * .00390625 + 1.22 volts = 1.2278125) so you can see all your temps will rise as you add the voltage a little goes a long way and Dell's presets are set way too high to maintain their set values for long. A VID closest matched to required amount for your set turbo speeds will allow the max value to be maintained for longer than a high VID. In fact if benching most bench programs wont push the cpu hard enough to require as much VID as the VID required for factory set type stability, so if benching and not looking for stability for longterm use, use the lowest possible VID that allows you to survive the given bench and turbo speeds set so the cpu stays coolest and therefore the turbo max is maintained longer*!Notice!*

*1/256 = .00390625 Volt

*Just multiply the Flex VID set in BIOS by the .00390625 Volt to get the max cpu turbo VID

I got a guide I'm putting up tommorow with the links to the Unlocked bios etc. So all M18x owners here can dabble... there's a little overclocking info in it for everyone. Thanks Stamatis its been a lot of hard work. The learning the bios modding is easier now that I have flashed almost 50 modded bios's of my bios. Lol just been so tired... night is the only time I have to work sometimes.
